Pink Floyd Animals 2018 Remix – hear Dogs in full!

As you all no doubt know, Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix is being released on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), Blu-ray, and SACD on September 16th, and on October 7th, in Deluxe Gatefold format. Today (Friday, 22nd July) the first audio from the release has appeared, in the form of the 2018 remix of the magnificent Dogs, which you can hear below! The Deluxe Gatefold version of Animals 2018 Remix includes the LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. The Blu-ray and DVD audio include the 2018 remix in Stereo, 5.1 Surround (both by James Guthrie) and the original 1977 Stereo mix. The 32-page booklet features rarely seen behind the scenes photographs of the original album sleeve shoot along with live images and memorabilia. We’ve had emails asking about the Blu-ray and DVD editions, enquiring whether there is any region coding. This is important for those who are looking to order from other countries, either due to availability, or price. We’ve had it confirmed that there is NO region coding on the discs, which is great news. The album’s iconic cover shows an inflatable pig (known as Algie) floating between two chimneys of London’s Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters, and designed by long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis Studios. For this new release, the artwork has been re-designed for the modern era by Storm’s Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell. This newly released video, below, uses some animation with the new album cover design to complement the audio (albeit in lower quality than the eventual release) of Dogs, released today as an Instant Grat/Digital Single. Even with compression, the 2018 remix of Dogs sounds incredible! Early ’70s live Pink Floyd recordings released

In a surprise move, with no official announcement or fanfare, a dozen recordings of Pink Floyd live during the years 1970 – 1972 have quietly been released to the various streaming services. Whilst the sound quality in places leaves a little to be desired, much of it sounds great, and more importantly the recordings document a wonderful period of the band in concert. They find the band in fine form, having honed their craft so that many of the pieces performed enjoyed some extended improvisation and exploration. With one of the recordings coming from March 1972, there’s also an early rendition of The Dark Side Of The Moon. As many of you will know, that was an album which changed quite considerably from its initial outings, so an interesting one to listen to if you haven’t yet heard it. A Bygone Afternoon: Floyd Alfresco – a playlist

We’re always very keen for Brain Damage visitor contributions, and the following is a great example of writing by I. G. Roberts. He has come up with a great, and well argued, Pink Floyd playlist that, he suggests, looks at “the gentler, lesser spotted, more rusticated side of one of the world’s most successful bands. ‘A sun-dappled world of birdsong, bees, church bells and drowsy melodies drifting down the river into the sunset awaits you.’”… I fell under the spell of The Pink Floyd on hearing their first two singles, ‘Arnold Layne’ and ‘See Emily Play’, during the fabled spring and summer of 1967 – I think the definite article may have still been in play then, although it had certainly disappeared by early August when the debut album was released. At the time, I spent approximately half of one week’s wages on the thrilling ‘See Emily Play’ – about 35p these days – from my after-school job (collecting paint and wallpaper etc. on a delivery bike with a basket attached for a local decorator’s shop from a wholesaler). Joint-top of my birthday wish-list were Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn. I certainly got both albums,
although as I had left school and was working by then, I may have had to cough up some of the price of them out of my wages. I think albums cost 32s/6d each – in modern money, a combined sum of £3.25p. I doubt if I’ve ever since had such value from that amount of cash. No wonder that Pepper and Piper are forever linked in my mind. Incidentally, the recording of both albums overlapped in the studios at Abbey Road during the first half of 1967.
