David Gilmour: Luck and Strange – new album announced!

This afternoon, the months of speculation and rumour come to a close, with the announcement of David Gilmour’s new album, Luck and Strange. It is his first new album in nine years, and those who have been on social media over the last couple of days will have seen movement on his official channels, changing the profile pictures and headers to subtle, rather mysterious images of a figure with their arms out, and rushing water. His official website, too, had undergone a similar change with the same imagery and a sign-up button. The album will be released on September 6th, on Sony Music, on LP, CD, Blu-ray and digital. Deluxe LP and CD boxsets will be announced in the coming weeks. The first track from the album – The Piper’s Call – will be released tomorrow (Thursday, April 25th), following a world exclusive first play on the BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show. A video for the song will be available to watch from Friday. Full track listings are shown below. Luck and Strange was recorded over five months in Brighton and London and is Gilmour’s first album of new material in nine years. The record was produced by David and Charlie Andrew, best known for his work with ALT-J and Marika Hackman. Of this new working relationship, David says, “We invited Charlie to the house, so he came and listened to some demos, and said things like, “Well, why does there have to be a guitar solo there?” and “Do they all fade out? Can’t some of them just end?”. He has a wonderful lack of knowledge or respect for this past of mine. He’s very direct and not in any way overawed, and I love that. That is just so good for me because the last thing you want is people just deferring to you.” The majority of the album’s lyrics have been composed by Polly Samson, Gilmour’s co-writer and collaborator for the past thirty years. Samson says of the lyrical themes covered on Luck and Strange, “It’s written from the point of view of being older; mortality is the constant.” Gilmour elaborates, “We spent a load of time during and after lockdown talking about and thinking about those kind of things.” Polly has also found the experience of working with Charlie Andrew liberating. “He wants to know what the songs are about, he wants everyone who’s playing on them to have the ideas that are in the lyric informing their playing. I have particularly loved it for that reason.” The album features eight new tracks along with a reworking of The Montgolfier Brothers’ Between Two Points and has artwork and photography by the renowned artist Anton Corbijn. Musicians contributing to the record include Guy Pratt and Tom Herbert on bass, Adam Betts, Steve Gadd and Steve DiStanislao on drums, Rob Gentry and Roger Eno on keyboards with string and choral arrangements by Will Gardner. The title track also features the late Pink Floyd keyboard player Richard Wright, recorded in 2007 at a jam in a barn at David’s house.

Pink Floyd Animals 2018 Remix – Dolby Atmos Blu-ray coming

Coming on May 17th, on Blu-ray and compatible digital platforms (Apple Music, Tidal, and Amazon Music), is the Dolby Atmos version of Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix. It is the first time the album will have been available in Dolby Atmos. The Blu-ray includes High Resolution Stereo and 5.1 mixes alongside the 1977 Original Stereo Mix. For those who have compatible equipment to hear it in its full glory, the Dolby Atmos mix goes beyond ordinary listening by immersing the listener in the music, revealing details with unparalleled clarity and depth. Listeners will feel like they are inside the song as music moves around and above them. The album artwork has been reimagined especially for this release and presented in a digipak with a 16-page booklet, a sticker and a postcard. The front cover image still includes the iconic pig floating between two chimneys of the Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters. However, for this new release, the artwork has been re-created for the modern era by Storm Thorgerson’s Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell and Peter Curzon from StormStudios, and shows the historic building as it looks now, complete with light projections, variations of which feature in the accompanying booklet. The projections and graphics were mapped and designed by Peter Curzon for the launch of the 2018 Remix and the photography is by Rupert Truman and Benny Trickett with Aubrey Powell. The Animals 2018 Remix is also available on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), SACD and Deluxe Gatefold formats. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. Happy 80th birthday, Roger Waters!

The combined wishes of all of us on the Brain Damage team, along no doubt with many of you reading this, go to Roger Waters, who celebrates the very special occasion of his 80th birthday today! Roger was born in Great Bookham, Surrey, in 1943, moving to Cambridge when he was two years old. It was there that he met, and became childhood friends with, a number of key people in the story of Pink Floyd. Of course, Roger has been extremely busy over recent years, having successfully taken Dark Side Of The Moon on tour in 2006, through to 2008. On completing that, he immediately started work on a new version of The Wall – which finally opened in September 2010. That tour was spectacularly successful, wrapping up in Paris for show number 217 in September 2013. Recordings of that tour turned into the film, shown in cinemas and released on DVD/Blu-ray and as part of a mammoth Super Deluxe Edition. More recently, he performed his highly acclaimed Us + Them world tour, which was filmed and was shown in cinemas worldwide, with the home release of it on Blu-ray, 2CD, 3LP vinyl and DVD that followed. He also released his latest full solo album, Is This The Life We Really Want? as well as overseeing the release of the late Nick Sedgwick’s book about the band, and in particular, the 1974 tour of The Dark Side of the Moon. 2022 finally saw him back on tour for This Is Not A Drill, originally due to start in 2020 but delayed due to Covid-19, with the stage presentation being “in the round”. The powerful presentations, with the unique staging which sees Roger wandering around, addressing attendees on all sides of the arenas, have already thrilled audiences in many countries with more shows to come in South America. June also saw the release of the six-song album, The Lockdown Sessions, which gathered together new versions of Mother, Two Suns In The Sunset, Vera, The Gunner’s Dream, The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range, and Comfortably Numb 2022. Finally, Roger’s Redux version of The Dark Side Of The Moon is released next month, and he presents this in a pair of shows at the legendary London Palladium. The official Pink Floyd social channels this morning also shared a birthday wish for Roger, with a message looking back in fondness to all the work they all did together: We hope you have a great day, Roger. Many happy returns!

The Dark Side Of The Moon – Official 50th Anniversary Book

Back in October, we told you about the official hardback book that was published on March 24th 2023 as part of the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon by Pink Floyd. With the Floydian bookshelves now beginning to groan with the number of books easily into triple figures – and that’s not including lyric or musical tablature publications – a lot of familiar ground has been covered in a number of them. It therefore takes something different, something new, for books to stand out in a crowded field. So, we come to the Official 50th Anniversary Book, which is quite rightly already proving extremely popular amongst Pink Floyd fans who have been fortunate enough to already see it. The book is being sold separately as well as being included in the 50th anniversary The Dark Side Of The Moon Deluxe Box Set (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-50th-anniversary-box-set-anno.html). There is no difference between the box set and separate edition, other than the latter includes a dust jacket which features the iconic prism as per the record cover. With the box set carefully holding the book inside, a dust cover is not needed. There is a third option if you are interested – the Brain Damage exclusive signed book and print offer through RockArchive (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/exclusive-pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-official-book-and-signed-print.html) which is limited to just 100 copies and selling well. The book and print are signed by photographer Jill Furmanovsky. Curated by Furmanovsky, with art direction by Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, this LP-sized, 160-page book – with 143 illustrations – showcases some incredible, rare and previously unseen photographs, and was created with the involvement of the band members. In case you need reminding, or haven’t already seen the contents, the book includes:

The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary lights up New York

Happy release day! As you are probably aware, today sees the release of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary deluxe box set, official book, and Live At Wembley 1974 standalone CD and vinyl (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-50th-anniversary-box-set-anno.html) and there’s been plenty of coverage all over, celebrating this remarkable anniversary. Some places have done special things to mark the 50th – Milan have recreated the iconic cover in Duomo Square, using carefully arranged lights to render the colours coming out of the prism. We’ll hopefully have pictures of that shortly. Over in New York City, the Empire State Building have paid their own tribute, including the prism spectrum in their mast from sunset, which should be visible across Manhattan, and further afield, via their webcam. Here’s a drone’s eye look at it: We hope those of you who have already bought items from the 50th Anniversary range – the box set, book, standalone items or even merchandise – are pleased with what you have, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on what has arrived today!

BBC Radio 2 marks 50 years of The Dark Side of the Moon today

“50 years of The Dark Side of the Moon” (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001jztg) will see Walker marking the golden anniversary of this landmark Pink Floyd album, which is released in a deluxe box set in a few days time (on Friday, 24th March) with an accompanying official book within the box and sold separately (including our special and very limited edition book and print set exclusive). In the almost two hour special, Walker will revisit his own archive interviews with the band, and there’s a new chat with Pink Floyd expert and writer Mark Blake. As we’ve mentioned elsewhere on this site, Blake’s fascinating and revelatory new book Us & Them charts the career of the Hipgnosis team, Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell, who created the iconic cover for the album and many other classic album artworks. The show will be live on BBC Radio 2, which is available on a variety of platforms, from 3pm UK time today, and after broadcast, on demand (hopefully worldwide) at this direct link at BBC.co.uk (https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001jztg). News wrap: Guy in Brighton, Pink Floyd in German magazine, Ron Geesin talks sound effects

This morning we’re bringing together a few small items of recent news that might be of interest, all with a Floyd connection! First, those in or near Brighton in the south of England, Guy Pratt is hosting a Q&A with Toby Amies about Amies’ new movie about King Crimson, In The Court Of The Crimson King. The Q&A follows a screening of the film at Brighton’s Duke Of York’s Picturehouse (which dates from 1910 and claims to be the oldest purpose-built cinema in the UK), on Saturday, April 8th at 8:30pm. Details and tickets here (https://www.picturehouses.com/movie-details/008/HO00012682/in-the-court-of-the-crimson-king-toby-amies-q-a). For those of you in Germany, the latest issue (cover date March 2023) of Eclipsed Magazine (https://www.eclipsed.de/en) has a large feature on The Dark Side Of The Moon – as hinted at with the very eye-catching cover. Their synopsis of the main feature is as follows: “50 years ago, in March 1973, the eighth album of Pink Floyd was released. At that time, no one could have guessed what traces “The Dark Side Of The Moon” would leave in the world of rock music. Today we know that it is one of the five best-selling albums of all time and crowned an entire genre. For art rock and for the band itself, a new era began with this work. Pink Floyd would become one of the most famous and influential groups ever. The album is a synthesis of music, lyrics, sound and artwork. To this day, it has lost none of its fascination. This fascination will also be kept alive by the new deluxe box of the album – including Dolby Atmos mix – which will be released on March 24.” From the cover it is clear that they also look at Alan Parsons’ work on the album, and include a classic interview with David Gilmour. Our thanks to Michael Nickel for the information on this one! Last month, the BBC’s Radio 4 broadcast a documentary about sound effects, and the incredible impact they have on story-telling and atmosphere within film, TV and radio. The hour-long programme, which is available to listen to online (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001hxs4) for the next 11 months, includes musicians and foley artists, alongside the likes of Ben Burtt who made iconic sounds for Star Wars. Ron Geesin, who worked with Pink Floyd on Atom Heart Mother, and chiefly with Roger Waters on Music From The Body (although the entire band appear uncredited on the final track of the album), also features from around the 17 minute mark. Ron explains how he got into creating his sound textures and techniques. Our thanks to Malcolm Walker for tipping us off about this fascinating radio show. Staying with the radio, last week, Paul Giblin, director of Phonic FM, an Exeter community station, dedicated his radio show to his personal celebration of 50 years of The Dark Side Of The Moon, reconstructing the album from many diverse sources in a live 2 hour mix. He started with the original Speak to Me, then explored classical, bluegrass, jazz, reggae, dub, ska, polka, dubstep, trance, soul, wild rock, country and other takes on it until concluding with the Floyd’s live Eclipse from 1974, complete with its tolling bell. Listen to the show in full here! (https://www.mixcloud.com/paulgiblin33/fsoe-show-dark-side-50-year-diversity-mix/). Finally, details of some shows covering Pink Floyd’s music. First, Primus leader Les Claypool and his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade (which includes Sean Lennon on guitar) will be touring the US this summer performing Animals in full (with co-headliners Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads and Adrian Belew on 11 dates performing Remain In Light). Dates, venues and ticket info at Ticketmaster.com (https://www.ticketmaster.com/search?q=Les+Claypool%27s+Fearless+Flying+Frog+Brigade&lang=en-us). Second, for those in Sicily, Pink’s One, the Italian Pink Floyd tribute show, are bringing back Floyd backing singer Machan Taylor, saxophonist Scott Page and percussionist Gary Wallis, for three live concerts, respectively at the Mandanici Theater in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto on April 21st and at the Vittorio Emanuele Theater in Messina on April 22nd and 23rd 2023. Tickets and more details are available from Tickettando (https://www.tickettando.it).

Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th anniversary box set announced

Following on from this week’s teaser videos, and whispers and rumours abounding, the official announcement has been made today for Pink Floyd’s celebration of the 50 years since the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon. Apart from a deluxe box set, which is released on March 24th, 2023, there are also standalone releases, Planetarium presentations of the album, and a competition aimed at animators. Rest assured, we have all the details for you here. First, the box set: As you might be able to determine from the picture, the new deluxe box set includes a CD and gatefold vinyl of the new 2023 remastered studio album, and Blu-Ray and DVD audio discs featuring the original 5.1 mix and remastered stereo versions. The set also includes an additional Blu-ray disc of the new Atmos mix plus a CD and vinyl (for the first time) of The Dark Side Of The Moon – Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974. There’s also a 76-page music book, replicas of two 7″ singles, posters, stickers, a replica invite to the press preview of the album at London Planetarium in February 1973, and Thames & Hudson’s 160-page hardback book with rare and previously unseen photographs from the 1972-1975 tours taken by Jill Furmanovsky, Peter Christopherson, Aubrey Powell, and Storm Thorgerson. For full details – and ordering details – please see below. On the same day, 24th March, the CD and LP of The Dark Side Of The Moon – Live At Wembley Empire Pool, London, 1974 will be released separately from the box set. It was originally recorded in November 1974 as part of the band’s winter tour and this is the first time it will be available as a stand-alone album, with artwork featuring an original 1973 line-drawn cover by George Hardie. The book Pink Floyd – The Dark Side Of The Moon: 50th Anniversary (which we talked about here on 14th October 2022) will also be published separately by Thames & Hudson on 24th March 24 to coincide with the box set release (which includes it). Curated by photographer Jill Furmanovsky and art directed by Hipgnosis co-founder Aubrey Powell, this LP-sized volume showcases rare and previously unseen photographs taken during The Dark Side Of The Moon tours of 1972-1975 and was created with the involvement of the band members. The 50th Anniversary release will also be celebrated as Pink Floyd have invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create music videos for any of the 10 songs on the iconic 1973 album. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators from the beginnings of the band (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. The 50th Anniversary will be no exception.
