Just announced is the release – on October 13th – of breakout sets from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (TDSOTM) 50th Anniversary box set. Coming on that date, from Warner Music (Sony Music outside Europe) are the hoped for stand-alone releases of the newly remastered TDSOTM on CD, LP and Blu-ray. First released as part of the box set which appeared in March, this will be the first time that the new remaster of the classic album will be available on its own. The Blu-ray contains the Dolby Atmos and a 5.1 Surround mix as well as the remastered Stereo version. The package comes with commemorative postcards, stickers and a 24-page booklet. The 50th Anniversary continues to be celebrated as Pink Floyd invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create animated music videos for any of the 10 songs on the album, and a number of entries have been lodged already. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe, etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. Animators can enter up to 10 videos, one per song on the album. A winner will be selected from a panel of experts which will include Nick Mason and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell (Pink Floyd’s creative consultant). The deadline for submissions is November 30th 2023. To enter and for more information go to pinkfloyd.com/competition (https://www.pinkfloyd.com/competition/). A live streamed Q&A has also been announced, featuring Powell in conversation with animators who have created some videos in promotion for the competition and who will discuss their work and the creative process. The event will take place on September 6th at 5pm UK time on YouTube, via Pink Floyd’s official channel there. ORDERING INFORMATION:

Something that we know probably most – if not all – of you have been eagerly awaiting, has just been announced this afternoon. Pink Floyd’s Animals 2018 Remix is being released on CD, LP (with gatefold artwork), Blu-ray, and SACD on September 16th, and on October 7th, in Deluxe Gatefold format. The Deluxe Gatefold version includes the LP, CD, audio Blu-ray, audio DVD and a 32-page book. The Blu-ray and DVD audio include the 2018 remix in Stereo, 5.1 Surround (both by James Guthrie) and the original 1977 Stereo mix. The 32-page booklet features rarely seen behind the scenes photographs of the original album sleeve shoot along with live images and memorabilia. The album’s iconic cover shows an inflatable pig (known as Algie) floating between two chimneys of London’s Battersea Power Station, conceived by Roger Waters, and designed by long-time collaborator Storm Thorgerson of Hipgnosis Studios. For this new release, the artwork has been re-designed for the modern era by Stormâs Hipgnosis partner Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell. Taking new shots of the building as it appeared during the recent conversion work, Po experimented with new angles and produce some striking new takes on the classic original. Po elaborates: “With the original 1977 album cover being such an iconic piece of stand-alone art, I had the chance to update it, which was a rather daunting task, but Hipgnosis took the opportunity to re-photograph the image to reflect a changing world, and by using modern digital colouring techniques I kept Pink Floyd’s rather bleak message of moral decay using the Orwellian themes of animals, the pig Algie, faithful to the message of the album.” The main image of the train tracks and shed, already familiar to many of you following Roger Waters’ social media posts about it, features on most of the formats, but there’s a strikingly different image – a more dark, moody and colourful look at Battersea Power Station at night – used for the Blu-ray cover. The full list of format details are below (click Read More to see them), and here are the direct links available so far to place your orders (which help us with Brain Damage’s ongoing running costs, without costing anything further to you!). If the store link for the format you want isn’t “clickable”, that’s because they haven’t got the item listing live yet. Please keep trying! The SACD only seems to be available from a couple of retailers currently.. Very sad news broke last night – the acclaimed, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck died at the age of 78. His family posted the following on his Twitter page: “On behalf of his family, it is with deep and profound sadness that we share the news of Jeff Beck’s passing. After suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, he peacefully passed away yesterday. His family ask for privacy while they process this tremendous loss.” David Gilmour posted the following on his and Pink Floyd’s socials: “I am devastated to hear the news of the death of my friend and hero Jeff Beck, whose music has thrilled and inspired me and countless others for so many years. Pollyâs and my thoughts go out to his lovely wife Sandra. He will be forever in our hearts.” Jeff’s career started when he left Wimbledon Art College to join Screaming Lord Sutch and the Tridents, subsequently joining the Yardbirds in 1965 when Eric Clapton left. A couple of years later he formed his own Jeff Beck Group (with Rod Stewart and Ronnie Wood in the band). In later years, he concentrated on his successful solo career. The quality and style of his guitar playing led to many guest appearances. His work on Roger Waters’ 1992 album Amused To Death was a musical highlight of that work, and during Jeff’s gigs at the Royal Festival Hall in London, September 2002, he was joined onstage by Roger for them to play What God Wants parts 1 and 3. Two years later, Jeff shared the bill with David Gilmour for the 2004 Teenage Cancer Trust concert at the Royal Albert Hall, and in July 2009, again at the Royal Albert Hall, David and Jeff performed an extended version of Jerusalem, William Blake’s poem that became a hymn (seen to the left), followed by Hi Ho Silver Lining (one of Jeff’s biggest hits) with David on vocals and lead guitar. In May 2018, Still On The Run: The Jeff Beck Story (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/archive/jeff-beck-documentary-including-david-gilmour-contribution-dvd-blu-ray-c.html) was released on DVD and Blu-ray, which includes contributions from David Gilmour as well as Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Rod Stewart and many more.
In a surprise move, with no official announcement or fanfare, a dozen recordings of Pink Floyd live during the years 1970 – 1972 have quietly been released to the various streaming services. Whilst the sound quality in places leaves a little to be desired, much of it sounds great, and more importantly the recordings document a wonderful period of the band in concert. They find the band in fine form, having honed their craft so that many of the pieces performed enjoyed some extended improvisation and exploration. With one of the recordings coming from March 1972, there’s also an early rendition of The Dark Side Of The Moon. As many of you will know, that was an album which changed quite considerably from its initial outings, so an interesting one to listen to if you haven’t yet heard it. The full list of albums the band released as part of their surprise drop is as follows: They Came In Peace, Leeds University 28 February 1970 Washington University 16 November 1971
