Nick Mason’s Saucers move Thessaloniki, Greece, gig

Just announced is a move of venue for one of the upcoming shows on Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets European tour. The organisers have had to move the show, on June 3rd from the Dassous Theatre in Thessaloniki, Greece, to Moni Lazariston (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2022/june-3rd-dassous-theatre-thessaloniki-g.html). The new venue, Moni Lazariston, is a cultural centre and art museum in a former monastery, with an auditorium holding 3,000 for concerts and plays. It is reputedly a great place for a concert! Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – US/Canada tour 2022 rescheduled dates

With uncertainty over surges of Coronavirus cases, the January/February 2022 tour dates for Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets in the US and Canada were postponed. Rearranging existing tour dates (particularly at the moment with the heavily increased demand from all artists affected) must be incredibly difficult, as the available venues must be the right size for the act, and in a vaguely logical geographical location so bands and crews aren’t zig-zagging their way across a country in an unsustainable way. However, after what we suspect has been a huge amount of work behind the scenes, the revised US and Canadian tour has now been announced. The difficulties in sorting a revised schedule are evident in that, sadly, six gigs have had to be cancelled. These are: Cincinnati which was originally on February 1st, St Louis on February 8th, Memphis on February 9th, Kansas on February 10th, Sacramento on February 23rd and Spokane on February 27th. For all of you holding tickets for these shows, the point of sale should be in touch with a refund. The better news is that these six cancelled gigs, have been replaced by eight new shows (in different locations). There are also three of the existing shows that have moved venues, within the same cities – Washington DC, Phoenix AZ, and Vancouver BC. For rescheduled shows that will be taking place at the same venue, all previously purchased tickets will be valid for the new date. For all shows being moved to new venues, customers will be automatically refunded for their purchase and offered an exclusive presale opportunity for the new venue and date. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets cancel Russian gigs

In an expected move, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have this morning announced that they have cancelled the brace of concerts they had lined up in Russia as part of their upcoming 2022 Echoes tour. The shows which were to be held on May 23rd at the BKZ Oktyabrsky Concert Hall in St Petersburg, and May 25th at the State Kremlin Palace in Moscow, will not take place. The band issued the following statement:
“Due to the current events happening in Ukraine, we are cancelling all of our shows in Russia that were due to take place this summer.
“Our thoughts and support are with all those in Ukraine.” We assume the ticket agents will issue refunds automatically to ticket holders, and any queries should be directed to them for resolution.

Nick Mason – a very happy birthday to you!

All of us here at Brain Damage offer our very best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates the very special occasion of his birthday today (January 27th). We all hope you are going to have a great day, Nick! The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his late father Bill, he has been a petrol head from a young boy, and cars have been – and remain – one of his major passions in life. His most recent book, Passion for Speed (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/passion-for-speed-nick-mason-and-mark-hales-2.html), is worth checking out, as is the DVD of the same name (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/dvds-and-videos/passion-for-speed-ferrari-enzo-dvd-nick-mason-and-mark-2.html) focusing on his Ferrari Enzo car (with Nick heavily involved). Of course, for those who haven’t read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/inside-out-2011-edition-updated-paperback-nick-mason-2.html) is an absolute essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, softback (paperback) and an audiobook, which is read by Nick himself… Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times. Musically, of course, the big news over the last few years was the launch of his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. The four initial, small gigs in May 2018 held in London lead to a very successful and critically acclaimed European tour in September. This was followed, of course, in 2019 with dates in the US, Canada, and more dates in the UK and Europe. 2020 saw the release of the superb London Roundhouse concert film on audio and video formats, and was due to see the band play more shows. Sadly, the pandemic put the halt on any such plans for 2020, and 2021. The January/February 2022 tour of the US and Canada has also been postponed, and fingers are firmly crossed that these dates are rescheduled for later in the year, and that the upcoming UK and European dates – due to start in mid-April (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2022/index.php) – go ahead as planned. New book reveals unseen early Pink Floyd photographs

Limited to just 1000 numbered copies (which are expected to sell quickly), Pink Floyd – The Nico van der Stam Archives, published on December 1st, 2021, is presented as a deluxe clothbound and hardback edition, with 112 heavyweight pages, and signed by the author. His images of Syd Barrett’s The Pink Floyd from 1967 are of an iconic beauty. However, few people in the Netherlands – and even less abroad – associate these photos with photographer Nico van der Stam (Rotterdam 1925 – Amsterdam 2000), who captured the band in Amsterdam in April 1967, and again two months later in London. Initially focused on documenting everyday city life and the flourishing local jazz scene, Van der Stam soon turned his lens on the emerging pop music, photographing such luminaries as Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, The Mothers Of Invention, The Doors, Cream, Janis Joplin, The Kinks, The Supremes and The Pink Floyd. He was regularly found in studios where artists were recording for radio and television. “I went to the studios, took pictures of rehearsals and recordings and then sold them to the broadcasting companies.” The few pictures of Pink Floyd that are previously published – without exception in a characteristic square format and not normally seen in colour – are just an excerpt from Van der Stam’s immense catalogue which holds over a million negatives. For this new book, Floydstuff’s Charles Beterams has taken a deep dive into Van der Stam’s archive, exploring and unearthing the photographer’s breathtaking oeuvre. An unprecedented amount of newly discovered Pink Floyd transparencies and negatives – starting with those from the aforementioned 1967 sessions of the band in all its psychedelic glory – have been catalogued, scanned and retouched for the very first time. Nico van der Stam also took pictures of Pink Floyd during their 1969 and 1970 concerts at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw. By the time the band played the Rotterdam Ahoy’ in 1971, he was no longer doing concert photography himself, assigning requisite duties to his then assistant Govert de Roos, who went on to become a renowned photographer in his own right and kindly provides the foreword to this book. Most of the pictures from these three gigs are available to the public eye for the very first time. Pink Floyd – The Nico van der Stam Archives is not only a well-deserved tribute to a unique photo press agency but also an impressive and hitherto unseen insight into the legendary British band’s defining years. Pink Floyd Live At Knebworth 1990 being released on CD, 2LP vinyl, and digital

It has just been announced that next month, on April 30th, 2021, Pink Floyd Live At Knebworth 1990 will be released for the first time on CD, 180g heavyweight double vinyl LP, and digital platforms. The concert was part of the star-studded 1990 Silver Clef Award Winners performance at Knebworth House, in Hertfordshire, England, headlined by the Floyd. The concert, in front of around 120,000 fans, was a fundraiser for the Nordoff Robbins Music Therapy Charity, and also included Paul McCartney, Genesis, Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Cliff Richard The Shadows, Elton John, Status Quo, Tears For Fears, and Robert Plant Jimmy Page. The Floyd set was performed by the touring line-up of the late 1980s, with a slight change to the vocalists – joining Durga McBroom was Sam Brown, her mother Vicki, and Clare Torry (original vocalist for The Great Gig In The Sky, resuming her role for this show, three years after doing the same for Roger Waters at his pair of 1987 Wembley Arena gigs). Saxophonist Candy Dulfer and keyboard player Michael Kamen also joined the band for this one-off show. The audio has been remixed by David Gilmour and Andy Jackson, and following its appearance in 2019’s The Later Years box set, is now available on CD or double vinyl for the first time as a standalone album. Nick Mason looked back at the concert, and remarked: “There is something special about Knebworth. We all still have fond memories of playing there in the 70’s, and this show was no different. As a North London boy this was almost a home game, but with the added delight of being the re-assembly of the band after a fairly mega tour that had lasted for well over a year. It was also an opportunity to get the wonderful Candy Dulfer to play - I had been a fan of hers for quite a while, and it was just a shame we didn’t have an opportunity to utilise her for more. We also had our dear friend Michael Kamen guesting. What has 2021 got in store for us?

With the start of the new year, and the dreadful 2020 now thankfully just a memory, thoughts are now turning to what the future may bring, particularly on a Pink Floyd related front. Whilst things generally are still very much up in the air, January is always a good time for – either serious or completely outlandish – speculation and pondering on things which might happen across the coming year. Covid-19 put paid to concert plans last year of course. We were looking forward to shows that had been announced by Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets, and Roger Waters with his This Is Not A Drill tour, which was to be “in the round” rather than the normal end stage presentation. Both tours were naturally postponed. Some places have tentatively resumed shows but most haven’t yet. Will it take significant inroads into vaccinations, and infection rates/hospitalisations significantly reduced, before concerts will properly resume? Standing gigs would seem particularly unlikely for a while. One thing that seemed clear last year was that once initial lockdown issues had been dealt with (for example, pressing plants and warehouses closed) and new working methods worked out, there was a buoyant release market for artists across the musical spectrum. Whilst a lot of the material was retrospective, with deluxe editions and suchlike, there was also a lot of new material released as well, some of which had been inventively recorded during lockdown. The normal, annual Record Store Day turned into three, pretty full events, with an additional raft of releases on Black Friday, and with National Album Day also taken into account, it was a busy time on the music front. So, it’s time for you to look into your crystal balls – what do you think or hope 2021 will bring us, in particular on the Floyd-related front? It would be interesting if you have other thoughts too.
