Beneath The Surface: Swimmers

Hello & welcome to yet another bountiful edition of Beneath The Surface. Today we welcome the wonderful duo, Swimmers join us as we sit down for a good old chinwag. So sit back, relax and enjoy this lovely little snippet 🙂

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

Luis – My dads mixed tapes and vinyls. Really was obsessed with music since I was a little kid. Didn’t really draw inspiration from anyone in particular, to be honest, just loved music in general and since my early teens enjoyed creating my own melodies just for the fun of it…so I guess it all built from there.

Rose – I come from a religious background, was not exposed to popular music until I was in my teens. I started listening to the great divas and trying to impersonate them.. that’s where I got my love for singing. Was obsessed with Michael Jackson, Whitney, Justin Timberlake & Mariah Carey.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

Without any particular focus, we’ve just been writing about raw human emotions, love, heartbreak, sex and freedom. As a form of escapism, I guess.

Rose likes to describe our sound as addictive, textured electronics wrapped around ethereal vocals.

I just love coming up with new beats, playing and layering sounds that inspire me, always looking for something that feels fresh but slightly dark and obscure, then think Rose’s vocals really bring the pop element to life.

What does your creative process look like?

It’s been a bit of a challenge, to be honest as we’ve been apart since Swimmers started! So it can be quite hard to generate some spontaneity together, but it has been fun nonetheless. We both love catchy melodies so eventually got very easy to find a common ground.

I find a lot of inspiration in small details and sometimes a sound can trigger the beginning of a song or just a particular mood. If that initial idea grabs me enough I’ll immediately get transported to a very happy place where I can have fun for days!

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Think Little Dragon would be on top of the list, absolutely love all they do, their sound is such a trip!

Rose loves Lady Gaga 🙂

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

Spread the word and share our music with your friends, haha! Really, just happy people are willing to listen to our music and hopeful to connect and reach out to a wider audience.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

Get heartbroken!.. Honestly fresh/intense life experiences are the best to keep the energy flowing and spark creativity. That’s possibly why being locked down triggered us to write so much last year…but now absolutely reached the point where moving on is vital, for all of us really.

Travelling would surely inspire me right now!!

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

We’re both really looking forward to start playing live again…and now possibly planning on going live with Swimmers. So just trying to get back in shape at the moment…unbelievable what a year off from playing gigs can do to you.

This period also gave us time to re-think priorities and plan ahead so loads of new ideas and music to work on and finish up, possibly even something more substantial could be happening. We’ve only just started to be honest and haven’t even got together in person to write! Quite expectant about what the future will bring us…
