Interview: Celine Love

Soulful vocals and poignant lyrics take centre stage in Rose Coloured – the new single from German-born London-based singer-songwriter Celine Love.

Reminiscing on memories of childhood and innocence before becoming aware of the darker elements of life, Celine brings her unique blend of folk and soul to the forefront with wistful melodies and dreamy production arrangements.

I had a chat to Celine about the the origins of the single, life in Berlin vs London and why everyone should have a regular day off Instagram…

Hi Celine! When did you first start making music?

I have always been surrounded by music. My parents are both musicians and I cannot remember a time when I did not try to hop up on stage with them. I would say that I started gigging and writing my own music at around 13 years old.

Your new single Rose Coloured is such a dreamy track. What’s the story behind the song?

Lyrically, I wanted to write a song that reflected parts of my childhood because I was feeling very nostalgic at the time. I was (and still am) also struggling with calling myself an adult and sometimes I wished I could simply think how I did when I was a kid.

I felt that wanting to put a ‘rose coloured’ filter on the world was a good way to describe my feelings. The song also describes wanting to live in a ‘fools paradise’, which is the more sinister part of the story, because bad things still happened in the world. I was just not confronted with them at a young age. The front of the song is supposed to be dreamy and the true meaning of it sinks in after hearing it a few times.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given as a musician?

I take factual and practical advice to heart a lot, and what has helped me out the most is being advised to write everyday if I can (I don’t always do).

Also to stay off of Instagram when the scrolling starts to make me anxious and to predict the anxiety – just staying off of it completely for the day or days if necessary. I can’t help but compare myself to everyone, even artists that are on a different path all together. It is just toxic and I am glad I have people around me to drill that advice in when I need it.

I see you were previously based in Berlin. Do you find your surroundings influence your music?

I did not notice ’til two years after I moved from Berlin how much it affected my songs. I look back at what I was writing and they are all pretty angry songs by a pretty lost girl.

Berlin is great and a part of the city’s energy definitely got to me. I still write those songs but with a more hopeful attitude. I felt more comfortable in London and also I grew as a person so my music has evolved. I am glad those old songs are hidden on my laptop.

If you could recommend one album for our listeners to check out, what would it be and why?

I am loving Lil Halima’s Love Songs For Bad Lovers at the moment. She is someone I am super excited to keep following.

What’s coming up next for you? Can we see you perform live any time soon?

I am finishing up more songs and am excited to continue sharing my music.

I’m most looking forward to playing Victorious Festival in Portsmouth and you’ll find me playing in London regularly. I have some announcements coming up. One reason to follow me!
