Album Review: The Used – ‘Heartwork’

On April 24, The Used released their eighth album, Heartwork. This is a fairly long album, with 16 songs total. The first track, “Paradise Lost, a poem by John Milton,” sets the tone for the album, with both the theme of the lyrics and the sound. The music video for it can be seen here. “Blow Me” features FEVER 333’s Jason Aaron Butler and is a fast and catchy song that was released this past December. “BIG, WANNA BE” is a song that I can envision being played live in stadiums. Up next is “Bloody Nose,” a song that captures all of your attention and forces you to listen to the lyrics. “Wow, I Hate This Song” has a lighter sound with heavier backing vocals. “My Cocoon” is a shorter, intermission song that is played at the start of the “Paradise Lost, a poem by John Milton” music video.

“Cathedral Bell” is a bouncy song filled with lots of electronic elements. One of my favorites on the album is “1984 (infinite jest).” It has a dramatic, orchestral sound mixed with a heavier chorus. “Gravity’s Rainbow” also perfectly incorporates strings into its heavier sound. “Clean Cut Heals” is another of my favorites on Heartwork, and it has a pop and electronic influence chorus. The title track of this record is a short song that’s spoken word. “The Lighthouse” is featuring blink-182’s Mark Hoppus and has a chorus that is good for jumping around to. “Obvious Blasé” has a catchy guitar riff at the beginning and features Travis Barker from blink-182 on drums. Featuring Beartooth’s Caleb Shomo, “The Lottery” is heavier and has powerful lyrics that inspire you to take a stand for something. You can feel the beat of “Darkness Bleeds, FOTF” draw you in from the start. The Used close out Heartwork with “To Feel Something,” a slower track that fades out with some static. As soon as Heartwork ended, I immediately wanted to listen to it again to absorb more of it. The Used put a more modern take on the album but their older sound definitely shines through in some places.
