Rock band Dead Poet Society started to truly emerge when they went on tour with Badflower on the Ok Iâm Sick album debut tour. I have to admit, I had never heard of Dead Poet Society until seeing them open for Badflower. My experience seeing them is the reason you never miss an opener, I found a new favorite band. Dead Poet Society recently signed with Spinefarm Records and their new single â.intoodeepâ, proves that they are here to keep Rock music alive.Â
The song starts and frontman Jack Underkoflerâs voice (a mix of Jack White and Alex Turner of Arctic Monkeys) powerfully comes through the speakers. I hear the line âAll of my friends are starting their lives, while Iâm working nights tryna stay aliveâ. Immediately, I knew this song was going to be something that almost everyone can relate to. We are always comparing our lives to the person next to us, and sometimes, that can lead you down a dark hole.Â
As the music and lyrics of the song build, you can feel the intensity of trying to find your place in the world, especially when it feels like you are the last one to reach your personal goals. Chorus lyrics âIâm so high, this lifeâs like heroine. Got me on my hands and knees.â play through my speakers and I canât help but think of the hopeless feeling of spiraling down, trying to grip onto reality. That feeling is even more prominent when you are trying to do the right thing, but get lost along the way. When the chorus repeats, the entire band comes in, playing a hard melody that instantly had me standing up and dancing.
The second verse continues to have a musical build, and the lyrics stay on the path of the relatable âdealing with your life choicesâ. What drew me in more is the fact that the band incorporated different musical elements throughout the second verse and chorus. That is one thing I always admire any musician doing. Itâs easier to keep the same melody throughout an entire song, but when you take the time to add intricate musical choices, I think it adds much more flare to a song.Â
When I first started listening to Dead Poet Society, one of the things that I loved most about them was their instrumental breakdowns. This song is now on the top of my âDPS Instrumental Breakâ list. Band members Jack Collins (guitar), Dylan Brenner (bass), and Will Goodroad (drums) come in, and all I could do was headbang. Then, I thought about how hard this song will hit live and I basically broke my neck. Just when I thought it couldnât get any better, singer Jack Underkofler starts singing in a soft, yet powerful falsetto. I donât know about you, but give me a man with a good falsetto and I am weak in the knees.Â
As the song comes to an end, the band continues to add new musical elements in the final chorus, keeping the listeners on their toes. The second â.intoodeep.â ended, the only word that came out of my mouth was âWOWâ. Dead Poet Society successfully delivered a song that everyone can relate to, while staying true to the sound that they play so well. Even saying in the song âwriting music that isnât popular anymoreâ, they are proving that they want to stick to their harder roots and provide music that we can all jam out to.Â
