I said that the 2015 Barn Dance may have been the best post SXSW Barn Dance ever, but after yesterday’s event I may have to moderate this. Yesterday didn’t have the warmest weather, but it was around 70 F, and … Continue reading
The last day of SXSW 2019 I spent seeing the excellent film Nothing Stays The Same in the afternoon, before walking over to South Congress and the Bloodshot Records party behind The Yard Dog. After dinner I went to The … Continue reading
Friday night at SXSW I decided to go and stay the whole night at the Mohawk before going over to The Driskill for Darling West. I have actually never been to the Mohawk before, and with both father and son … Continue reading
Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have added another couple of shows to their 2019 tour (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/index.php) – one indoor, one outdoor. The extra shows sit at the end of the current schedule, and take the band to Poland and the Czech Republic. Fans in those countries will now be able to catch the Saucers at the following gigs: Thursday 25th July 2019 – Lucerna Velky Sal, Prague, Czech Republic (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/july-25th-lucerna-music-bar-prague-czech-rep.html) – TICKETS (https://www.ticketmaster.cz/artist/nick-mason-vstupenky/871570) Saturday 27th July 2019 – Korty Legii/Legia Tennis Stadium, Warsaw, Poland (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/july-27th-korty-legii-legia-tennis-stadium-warsaw-p.html) – TICKETS (https://www.eventim.pl/artist/summerfogfestival/bilety.html?doc=artistPages%2Ftickets fun=artist action=tickets erid=2431135 includeOnlybookable=true x10=1 x11=nick%20mason) Tickets for these new shows have just gone on sale – midday local time – to coincide with the announcement, and are available NOW. The Warsaw show is part of the Summer Fog Festival, as you can see from the rather nice poster shown here (click the thumbnail to see it in better detail and colour). As normal, we have been busy setting up a dedicated page for both of these concerts which, with your assistance, will have all sorts of useful information, pictures, reviews and more. The pages can be found in the Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets 2019 Tour Zone (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/index.php) which has details of ALL the shows on this year’s tour, that have been announced so far. To cover regular email questions we are getting, if other dates/locations are revealed, then we will bring you the good news.
The first full SXSW night of showcases kicked off with almost 500 bands showcasing their music at close to one hundred venues. Since Edie Brickell was playing an eleven o’clock gig, I chose to go there early to be sure … Continue reading
Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets Tour 2019 (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/index.php), which takes in 45 dates in Canada, the US, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Malta and The Netherlands. The last public performance was in September, in Nottingham, England, and the entire 2018 European tour received huge acclaim from fans and critics alike. Those who have been fortunate enough to have seen the band in action already, will no doubt concur with this. The picture to the left (click the thumbnail) is from the first night of the European tour last year, when the band kicked things off at Cirkus in Stockholm, Sweden. This evening at 8pm local time, the band will take the stage at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/march-12th-queen-elizabeth-theatre-vancouver-bc-c.html). We’re hoping that some Brain Damage regulars will be there to experience the thrill of the first night. Anticipation will surely be very high for their first North American appearance. How will the show go? What will the set list be? Will it be the same as heard at last year’s shows – or have they changed things around, or indeed added anything to the set? UPDATE: The first show, at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/march-12th-queen-elizabeth-theatre-vancouver-bc-c.html), has taken place – and there was a revised set list! Rather than reveal spoilers here, you’ll find more information over on the show page for that performance… As ever, we will bring you all the information we can about this show, and all the subsequent ones on the tour. Of course, to do this the best we can, we really would love your help – if you are going to any of the shows, please report back afterwards with any comments you might have, pictures you’ve taken, or anything else of interest. You can do this by emailing us through this link (mailto:matt@brain-damage.co.uk?subject=NMSOS%20tour) or via our Contact Us page (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/contact-us/index.php). We’d love to hear from you, and appreciate all contributions made to the site. We hope, if you are seeing one of this year’s shows, that you enjoy the performance, and have a great time!
MOJO magazine’s two-part Pink Floyd special collectors’ edition (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-specials/emojespc/collectors-series-pink-floyd-bundle) is on sale now in UK stores. Housed in a gatefold card sleeve, with a mirrored prism on the front, and Atom Heart Mother’s Lulubelle III pictured on the inside when opened up, the magazine covers the early period in the band’s history: 1965-1973. The editor, Mark Blake (he of the excellent Pigs Might Fly biography of the band) has put together the pair of 132 page magazines in part to tie in with the upcoming tour of Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets that begins on March 12th in Vancouver. The publications pull together interviews and articles printed over the many years of MOJO magazine, and accompany them with many rare and previously unseen images of the band, to help trace the journey from the band’s first steps, through to The Dark Side Of The Moon. There were certainly a healthy number of pictures which I’d not seen before, and refreshingly for a special publication such as this, there is no advertising within its pages to artificially inflate the page count. Both parts should be worthwhile purchases for Floyd fans, providing plenty to read, and lots of visual entertainment too. The second part, also known as Edition 2, will be available in UK stores from April 4th, and covers the period of 1974 to the present day. As you’ll see from the image here, the cover of the second part has the band lurking behind a hole in the Wall… PLEASE NOTE that Edition 1 (part one) is selling incredibly well, and copies are becoming very hard to find. Secure your copy now by purchasing online (it’s available worldwide) through these links at the publishers: Specially priced bundle to buy Edition 1 (1965-73), and pre-order Edition 2 (1974-2019) (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-specials/emojespc/collectors-series-pink-floyd-bundle) or The link to buy Edition 1 (1965-73) only (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-specials/emojespc/collectors-series-pink-floyd-edition-1)
As you know, Christie’s New York is handling the upcoming sale of a significant chunk of the personal guitar collection of David Gilmour. With more than 120 guitars, including his preferred Fender models of Broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters, the auction on 20th June marks a rare opportunity for guitar aficionados, musicians and collectors to explore one of the world’s most comprehensive groupings of guitars that hooked a generation. As we noted, prior to the sale, the entire David Gilmour Collection will be on display at Christie’s London between 27th – 31st March, followed by highlights of the collection on display in Los Angeles from 7th – 11th May, and will conclude with a full preview in New York from 14th – 19th June. You can book your viewing slot for the London staging now – visit this page at Christie’s website to select your preferred time (https://a.flexbooker.com/widget/34ee144d-e3ee-4663-83b3-101464fd20a7?fbclid=IwAR2MllKSAB_jr3k5oZXI21WgMw6AQaBnXcREHn-C7iQN-u80xGpEm6WbfKI#calendar). Reservations are free of charge, but necessarily limited to reduce congestion, so don’t delay. At time of writing this, most time slots are still available, although some of the later slots each day are gone. For those unable to attend, the auction house had created an incredible virtual tour of the upcoming George Michael collection – hopefully they will create the same for David’s guitars… We have no idea if photography will be permitted at the viewing (a question we’ve had a number of times already) although if you pre-order the catalogue for The David Gilmour Guitar Collection, direct from Christies (https://catalogues.christies.com/christies-shop/Product.aspx?offerId=52694), you should have great pictures of every item on offer. The catalogues are priced at £30/$50/€45 each plus postage, and please note that catalogues will not be despatched until the week commencing 13th May, so it is unlikely to be available to purchase at the London or LA preview events.
