Tuchel claims Man Utd exposed familiar Chelsea trap; refuses to ‘point fingers’ at under-pressure star

Thomas Tuchel claimed that Chelsea’s 1-1 draw with Manchester United was another game this season that his side should have won after taking the lead.

The Blues dominated affairs at Old Trafford in Thursday’s Premier League encounter but failed to take the three points. Marcos Alonso fired the visitors into the lead with a powerful volley from inside the box.

However, Cristiano Ronaldo hit back moments later to equalise, with both sides sharing the spoils.

Nevertheless, Reece James came back into the team at right wing-back and proved one of Chelsea’s best players. Indeed, he was influential in creating a host of chances in good combinations with Mason Mount.

Ultimately, though, Tuchel rued a lack of finishing touch for his team missing out on another win.

“One team deserved to win and that was us,” the German told Sky Sports.  “We didn’t take it. It was a very, very good performance but we were not decisive enough.

“We lacked a bit of determination in the box to win the game. It sometimes happens. It’s on us to learn from it. You need to be clinical to get the reward. We have to live with a point but it’s not a fair result.

“We worked so hard to get the lead and suddenly the opponent gets one free shot and scores.

“Reece James played a very good match and Mason Mount unlucky with his decisions.”

In fact, Tuchel put Chelsea‘s latest result into a category that has been all too familiar this season.

The Blues have now led in five Premier League matches but had to settle for a 1-1 draw. Brighton – twice – Burnley and Everton have also won a point after coming from behind.

“We should have had three points tonight,” Tuchel added. “On and off the ball I was happy with how we played.

“We were very brave without the ball and the performance was excellent but we lacked a bit of determination and maybe a bit of luck inside the box.

“We’ve had it a bit too often this season where we have drawn games when we were clearly the better team.

“We had it in the first half of the season. We should have won this game.”

Kai Havertz has been in fine form for Chelsea this season but struggled for chances this season. Still, Tuchel insisted that the 22-year-old still has time to develop into his role.

“He needs to fight back into his shape. The guys are still young up front and we will not start pointing fingers,” Tuchel said.

“At Southampton and at the Bernabeu, we took our chances. So when we look at the data, there is a huge amount of intensity from Kai and Timo, so they don’t arrive fully fresh in these moments.”

Chelsea return to action next Sunday when facing Everton at Goodison Park.
