Meet the England internationals who could still be on the move during the final week of the summer transfer window

Watching Declan Rice complete what was a blockbuster £105million move to Arsenal this summer, it is fair to say that England’s elite have stollen most of the headlines this summer. With Three Lions skipper and now-former Tottenham record-breaker Harry Kane eventually completing his stunning switch to German heavyweights Bayern Munich earlier in the month, Gareth […]

Roger Waters shares Time from Dark Side Redux album

The second track from the upcoming Redux version of The Dark Side Of The Moon, that Roger Waters is releasing on October 6th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/roger-waters-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-redux-album-annou.html), has been released today to streaming services. Time has now been added to Money as the second full publicly available track from this new version of the Pink Floyd classic. Together they give a decent clue as to how the album should sound – a fairly stripped back, almost introspective and certainly atmospheric take, which is quite different from the original. The album will be available on digital platforms, as well as CD, and as mentioned above, the range of double vinyl editions, which includes standard black (links below), a selected-store-only blue vinyl (please check with your local record store for this, or order below through HMV.com (https://hmv.com/store/music/vinyl/dark-side-of-the-moon)), an Amazon exclusive violet vinyl (links below), a white vinyl which is a German exclusive through jpc.de (https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/roger-waters-dark-side-of-the-moon-redux/hnum/11550158), a yellow through FNAC in France (https://www.fnac.com/a18380149/Roger-Waters-The-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon-Redux-Exclusivite-Fnac-Vinyle-Jaune-Vinyle-album), a red (limited to 500 copies) from Newbury Comics in the US (https://www.newburycomics.com/collections/pre-orders/products/roger_waters-the_dark_side_of_the_moon_redux_exclusive_2lp?variant=42326528295092), and Roger’s official store (https://rogerwaters.tmstor.es) has an exclusive transparent orange vinyl edition, bundles with exclusive numbered prints and standard CD and vinyl editions, and even a gold cassette! Interestingly, the fourth side of the vinyl includes “an original composition”, which isn’t on the CD or cassette editions (we don’t yet know about the digital offerings). The Times newspaper noted that “a new 13-minute original ambient bonus track inspired by the re-recording will feature on the ten-track album, which will be released on the record label Cooking Vinyl on October 6 and supported by a series of live shows.” The live shows, being held at the London Palladium on October 8th and 9th, are sold out, although it is worth checking from time to time in case they have production tickets released. Nick Mason featured in German Drums & Percussion Magazine

Our friend Michael Nickel has been in touch with some information about a newly published issue of a German language magazine, which should be of interest to visitors to Brain Damage. The July/August 2023 issue of Drums & Percussion (What Moves Drummers) Magazine (issue 4 of 2023) (https://www.sticks.de/heftinhalt-artikeldetail?tx_news_pi1%5BactbackPid%5D=343&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Bnews%5D=13517&cHash=e12a9539a6bedafa8a852ee1c39116e9) has an eye catching cover featuring a very happy looking Nick Mason, in the midst of one of his Saucerful Of Secrets concerts. The cover story – “Time travel to the beginnings of Pink Floyd” – with Nick interviewed, is accompanied by a potted history of the band. On their website, they give an extract from the magazine feature: “With his new band Saucerful Of Secrets, the drummer who made music history with Pink Floyd is going way back in time. Here, Nick Mason tells us how this special time travel feels. However, the new band is not the only thing on the mind of the now 79-year-old… “This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the über-album The Dark Side of the Moon, and then there’s also a traveling exhibition about Pink Floyd called Their Mortal Remains – not to mention that Pink Floyd, by the way, has even released a new song after decades of abstinence in protest against the war in Ukraine. More than one topic for a conversation with a legend of our guild. “Nick, at the Roundhouse in London you played in 1966 and 2019 with at least partly the same songs. Where were the similarities and differences between then and now? Nick: “That was quite interesting. Of course there were similarities, but also differences: The main ones were on the technical side, because in 1966, for example, there was no stage, but an old trailer and a very small PA or very little electronics. So the whole thing was pretty quiet [laughs]. I mean, at the end of the evening the PA would have been completely destroyed. But musically it was pretty similar in parts, which I found very pleasant.” Our thanks to Michael for the information. The magazine can be purchased online through Sticks.de (https://www.sticks.de/heftinhalt-artikeldetail?tx_news_pi1%5BactbackPid%5D=343&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Bnews%5D=13517&cHash=e12a9539a6bedafa8a852ee1c39116e9).

Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux album announced!

Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux, his reimagining of the iconic 1973 Pink Floyd album, has now been announced. Coming on October 6th, it will be available in a variety of different editions, including digital, CD, cassette, and a range of double vinyl LPs in almost ‘any colour you like’! Roger: “When we recorded the stripped down songs for the Lockdown Sessions, the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon was looming on the horizon. It occurred to me that The Dark Side Of The Moon could well be a suitable candidate for a similar re-working, partly as a tribute to the original work, but also to re-address the political and emotional message of the whole album. I discussed it with Gus and Sean, and when we’d stopped giggling and shouting ‘You must be ****ing mad’ at one another we decided to take it on. It’s turned out really great and I’m excited for everyone to hear it. It’s not a replacement for the original which, obviously, is irreplaceable. But it is a way for the seventy nine year old man to look back across the intervening fifty years into the eyes of the twenty nine year old and say, to quote a poem of mine about my Father, ‘We did our best, we kept his trust, our Dad would have been proud of us’. And also it is a way for me to honour a recording that Nick and Rick and Dave & I have every right to be very proud of.” You can get your first proper experience of Roger’s new take on this album, with the official lyric video for Money, below. The album will be available on digital platforms, as well as CD, and as mentioned above, the range of double vinyl editions, which includes standard black, a selected-store-only blue vinyl (please check with your local record store for this, or order below through HMV), an Amazon exclusive violet vinyl, a white vinyl which is a German exclusive through jpc, and Roger’s official store (https://rogerwaters.tmstor.es) has an exclusive transparent orange vinyl edition, bundles with exclusive numbered prints and standard CD and vinyl editions, and even a gold cassette! Interestingly, the fourth side of the vinyl includes “an original composition”, which isn’t on the CD or cassette editions (we don’t yet know about the digital offerings). The Times newspaper today notes that “a new 13-minute original ambient bonus track inspired by the re-recording will feature on the ten-track album, which will be released on the record label Cooking Vinyl on October 6 and supported by a series of live shows.” ORDERING INFORMATION:

News wrap: Guy in Brighton, Pink Floyd in German magazine, Ron Geesin talks sound effects

This morning we’re bringing together a few small items of recent news that might be of interest, all with a Floyd connection! First, those in or near Brighton in the south of England, Guy Pratt is hosting a Q&A with Toby Amies about Amies’ new movie about King Crimson, In The Court Of The Crimson King. The Q&A follows a screening of the film at Brighton’s Duke Of York’s Picturehouse (which dates from 1910 and claims to be the oldest purpose-built cinema in the UK), on Saturday, April 8th at 8:30pm. Details and tickets here (https://www.picturehouses.com/movie-details/008/HO00012682/in-the-court-of-the-crimson-king-toby-amies-q-a). For those of you in Germany, the latest issue (cover date March 2023) of Eclipsed Magazine (https://www.eclipsed.de/en) has a large feature on The Dark Side Of The Moon – as hinted at with the very eye-catching cover. Their synopsis of the main feature is as follows: “50 years ago, in March 1973, the eighth album of Pink Floyd was released. At that time, no one could have guessed what traces “The Dark Side Of The Moon” would leave in the world of rock music. Today we know that it is one of the five best-selling albums of all time and crowned an entire genre. For art rock and for the band itself, a new era began with this work. Pink Floyd would become one of the most famous and influential groups ever. The album is a synthesis of music, lyrics, sound and artwork. To this day, it has lost none of its fascination. This fascination will also be kept alive by the new deluxe box of the album – including Dolby Atmos mix – which will be released on March 24.” From the cover it is clear that they also look at Alan Parsons’ work on the album, and include a classic interview with David Gilmour. Our thanks to Michael Nickel for the information on this one! Last month, the BBC’s Radio 4 broadcast a documentary about sound effects, and the incredible impact they have on story-telling and atmosphere within film, TV and radio. The hour-long programme, which is available to listen to online (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001hxs4) for the next 11 months, includes musicians and foley artists, alongside the likes of Ben Burtt who made iconic sounds for Star Wars. Ron Geesin, who worked with Pink Floyd on Atom Heart Mother, and chiefly with Roger Waters on Music From The Body (although the entire band appear uncredited on the final track of the album), also features from around the 17 minute mark. Ron explains how he got into creating his sound textures and techniques. Our thanks to Malcolm Walker for tipping us off about this fascinating radio show. Staying with the radio, last week, Paul Giblin, director of Phonic FM, an Exeter community station, dedicated his radio show to his personal celebration of 50 years of The Dark Side Of The Moon, reconstructing the album from many diverse sources in a live 2 hour mix. He started with the original Speak to Me, then explored classical, bluegrass, jazz, reggae, dub, ska, polka, dubstep, trance, soul, wild rock, country and other takes on it until concluding with the Floyd’s live Eclipse from 1974, complete with its tolling bell. Listen to the show in full here! (https://www.mixcloud.com/paulgiblin33/fsoe-show-dark-side-50-year-diversity-mix/). Finally, details of some shows covering Pink Floyd’s music. First, Primus leader Les Claypool and his Fearless Flying Frog Brigade (which includes Sean Lennon on guitar) will be touring the US this summer performing Animals in full (with co-headliners Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads and Adrian Belew on 11 dates performing Remain In Light). Dates, venues and ticket info at Ticketmaster.com (https://www.ticketmaster.com/search?q=Les+Claypool%27s+Fearless+Flying+Frog+Brigade&lang=en-us). Second, for those in Sicily, Pink’s One, the Italian Pink Floyd tribute show, are bringing back Floyd backing singer Machan Taylor, saxophonist Scott Page and percussionist Gary Wallis, for three live concerts, respectively at the Mandanici Theater in Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto on April 21st and at the Vittorio Emanuele Theater in Messina on April 22nd and 23rd 2023. Tickets and more details are available from Tickettando (https://www.tickettando.it).
