The Trusted Delivers Epic Indie-Rock Single ‘Terrible Flight’

I’m kicking off my virtuosic journey into 2023 with a band that knows how to endlessly reinvigorate the indie genre; a band that’ll have you holding up your lighters in a slow sway one moment, then have you hunting for a ticket to their epic live shows the next. Luckily for all you indie-lovers out there (myself included), this band has a released a new single of the name ‘Terrible Flight’. I’ll hold you in suspense no longer – this kaleidoscopic band is, of course, The Trusted.

Comprised of Southend-on-Sea born and raised, The Trusted rides on the talent of Dave Batchelor, Dale Holt-Mead, Fin Cunningham, and Tom Cunningham. Bonding in secondary school, this groovy ensemble ignited over a mutual love of the edgy melodies of 21st-century, British rock.

Garnering praise from the likes of Gigslutz, EarMilk and American Songwriter, The Trusted have received international support over the airwaves from the most distinguished radio players. From Charlie Ashcroft (Amazing Radio), to Jake Peach (BBC Introducing Essex), to Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music), The Trusted have made quite the splash.

Now, enough from yours truly, I’m certain you’ll be eager to try ‘Terrible Flight’ for size!

The track opens with an iridescent synth loop that immediately sparks an atmosphere of vivacity-streaked fantasy, exuding enough gusto to replace your morning cup of coffee. I can already affirm that this’ll be my morning bop to get me energised for a day of uni lectures!

What follows is a fusillade of serrated guitar riffs, ornamented with a compulsive impress of prismatic nostalgia. The instrumentation, spry with thrutches of modernity, strikes a mellifluent balance between classic, British rock and homely, mirthful indie, that will you get you on your feet!

Tom Cunningham’s vocals really is the cherry on top of the cake! Galvanised with a moderato tempo, the vocal performance effuses spumes of raw edge, but make no mistake – there is a mercurial glint to Cunningham’s voice, effortlessly knowing when to deliver spritzes of delicacy and when to punch it up to the next level!

Bolstered by Dave Batchelor’s insanely polished drumming talents, the fervent tonality of the melody is assuaged by the spectacular contrast of restraint and boldness. Although sparse, I think Batchelor’s implementation of the drumbeats lends itself to the addictive qualities of the single. You can tell the lads put their heart and soul into this gorgeous epitome of indie-rock.

When discussing the influences behind the track, lead vocalist, Tom had to say this:

“Terrible Fight is a song about being metaphorically beaten up. Part of growing up, is realizing that ‘life’ is basically an emotional/ psychological boxing ring. Whether it’s heartbreak, politics, or loss, it kind of feels like we are all being hit from all sides. I wanted ‘Terrible Fight,’ to be a song about being knocked over by all these heavy punches as well as our ability to just keep moving forward.”

Having ended 2022 with a brilliant performance at Chinnerys Southend, you can trust me when I say, I’ll be endlessly checking their page to see if I can grab a ticket to their first gig of 2023!
