Coming at the end of this month (on May 28th) is Still Wish You Were Here – A Tribute To Pink Floyd. Whilst there are a lot of tribute or cover versions of Pink Floyd material, this cover version of the entire album features a diverse set of well-known and well-respected musicians, taking in members of Yes, The Damned, Public Image Limited, King Crimson, Deep Purple and Genesis, amongst others! If you cast your eye at the track listing below, we’ve listed the musicians involved with each song, and we’re sure that some of the names will surprise you. Some of these have performed with Pink Floyd and Roger Waters at various points too. There’s a rich amount of pedigree amongst the assembled players, and therefore, we weren’t surprised when we listened to the album this week that the quality of performance came through clearly, right from the first track (Shine On Parts 1-5). It was a particular pleasure to hear Rick Wakeman tackle Welcome To The Machine, with this keyboard-heavy song suiting Rick perfectly. Have A Cigar is fun too. Wish You Were Here works well with the assembled musicians, with Parts 6-9 of Shine On benefitting particularly from the combos of Bootsy Collins and Steve Hillage, and towards the end of the piece, Rod Argent and Ian Paice. Here’s the track list, with the names of the musicians playing on each of them: Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 1-5) – Geoff Tate, Steve Hackett, Billy Sheehan, Mel Collins, Geoff Downes, Ian Paice
Welcome To The Machine – Todd Rundgren, Rick Wakeman, Tony Levin
Have A Cigar – James LaBrie, Steve Stevens, Patrick Moraz, Rat Scabies, Jah Wobble
Wish You Were Here – Rik Emmett, Joe Satriani, Edgar Froese, David Ellefson, Carmine Appice
Shine On You Crazy Diamond (Parts 6-9) – Rod Argent, Steve Hillage, Ian Paice, Bootsy Collins If this has intrigued you, orders are now being taken through the following links, which help us out with the ongoing running costs of Brain Damage without costing you a thing – and we really appreciate the help! The album will be available on CD in a 6-panel deluxe digipak, and a gatefold vinyl LP in a variety of colours (which we presume means is randomly allocated). UK television showing Roger Waters Us + Them on Saturday night
A quick alert for – principally – those of you in the UK. If you find yourself with little to do on Saturday evening, especially with the current Covid restrictions, you could do worse than tune in to the Sky Arts television channel (now available on Freeview channel 11, as well as through other providers including Sky and Virgin Media). From 6:30pm until 12:45am, there’s a feast of Pink Floyd related goodies. Starting off with the band’s Live At Pompeii film, it’s then PULSE. Prior to its domestic release on October 2nd, Roger’s Us + Them is then shown, and the evening is concluded with The Story Of Wish You Were Here. For the channel to be showing Us + Them just about a week prior to release is an unexpected treat. Our thanks to Dave Rogers for letting us know about this Floydian evening.
Two current German music magazines feature Pink Floyd
With thanks to Michael Nickel, we have two bits of news aimed principally at our friends in Germany. In that country’s stores at the moment are two magazines which may well take your interest. The first is Classic Rock Magazine (cover date September 2020), which has a multiple page report on the genesis of Pink Floyd’s 1983 album, The Final Cut – the last with Roger Waters still in the band. “Pink Floyd: The last common litter and THE FINAL CUT” delves deep into the background of the album. Elsewhere in the magazine is a major feature on Genesis, looking at their album, Selling England By The Pound. More details including ordering online through ClassicRock.net (https://classicrock.net/produkt/classic-rock-nr-92-genesis-auf-dem-absoluten-hoehepunkt-mit-selling-england-by-the-pound-ausgabe-09-20-september-2020-inkl-cd/). The other magazine that you might want to pick up is Rolling Stone’s German edition (again with a cover date of September 2020). In an article headed “Pink Floyd: This crazy diamond”, they take a multiple page look at the genesis of a different album – in their case (and hinted to by the title of the article) it is 1975’s Wish You Were Here, which they describe as “a sublime album about the burning of youth – and a hymn to the lost Syd Barrett”. Jimi Hendrix is featured elsewhere in the magazine, and indeed Jimi is the cover star. Roger Waters Us + Them 2CD, 3LP, DVD and Blu-ray announced
The news that many of you have been waiting for – the physical editions of the Roger Waters Us + Them concert film have now been announced, and will be released on October 2nd, 2020.Whilst the digital edition is now available to purchase or rent from your preferred outlet in 4K, HD and SD digital formats, we've had a lot of emails and messages asking us when people can get their hands on the Blu-ray, DVD, CD or 3LP vinyl of this spectacular recording. Whether you go for the digital download, the Blu-ray, or DVD, you'll have access to two additional concert songs not included in the original film shown in cinemas – Comfortably Numb and Smell The Roses – along with the short but fascinating documentary style feature A Fleeting Glimpse, which looks behind the scenes.Let's take a closer look at the contents. The 2CD set features the show (minus C Numb and Roses) split across the two discs, with the split coming where the intermission of the show was. So, you have on disc one: Intro / Speak To Me / Breathe / One Of These Days / Time / Breathe (Reprise) / The Great Gig In The Sky / Welcome To The Machine / Deja Vu / The Last Refugee / Picture That / Wish You Were Here / The Happiest Days Of Our Lives / Another Brick In The Wall Pt 2 and 3. Turning to the second disc, this contains: Dogs / Pigs (3 Different Ones) / Money / Us And Them / Brain Damage / Eclipse / The Last Refugee (Reprise) / Deja Vu (Reprise). The 3LP vinyl edition follows the above track list, but is split as follows: LP1 Side A: Intro – The Great Gig In The Sky; LP1 Side B: Welcome To The Machine – The Last Refugee; LP2 Side C: Picture That – Another Brick In The Wall Pt 3; LP2 Side D: Dogs; LP3 Side E: Pigs (3 Different Ones) – Money; LP3 Side F: Us And Them – Deja Vu (Reprise). The Blu-ray and DVD editions have the same contents but obviously the Blu-ray will be presenting the material in higher quality. These present the whole show (as per the 2CD track listing, but obviously not split), along with the live performances of Comfortably Numb and Smell The Roses, and the documentary A Fleeting Glimpse.Needless to say, this is bound to be a popular release when it appears on October 2nd. You should be able to place your orders for this through the following direct links (the use of which benefits Brain Damage at no extra cost to you, and is hugely appreciated by us as help towards the ongoing running costs of the site):ROGER WATERS US + THEM 3LP VINYL: Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089774M22/braindamage-20)Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B089774M22/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B089774M22 linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21)Canada (https://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089774M22/braindamageon-20)Germany (https://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089774M22/braindamage0f-21)France (https://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089774M22/braindamageon-21)Italy (https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B089774M22/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=23322 creativeASIN=%20%20B089774M22 linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21)Spain (https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B089774M22/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=%20%20B089774M22 linkCode=as2 tag=braidama01-21)ROGER WATERS US + THEM Blu-ray: Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08975HHLQ/braindamage-20)Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08975HHLQ/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B08975HHLQ linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21)Canada (https://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08975HHLQ/braindamageon-20)Germany (https://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08975HHLQ/braindamage0f-21)France (https://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08975HHLQ/braindamageon-21)Italy (https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B08975HHLQ/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=23322 creativeASIN=%20%20B08975HHLQ linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21)Spain (https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B08975HHLQ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=%20%20B08975HHLQ linkCode=as2 tag=braidama01-21)ROGER WATERS US + THEM DVD: Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08978X189/braindamage-20)Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B08978X189/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B08978X189 linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21)Canada (https://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08978X189/braindamageon-20)Germany (https://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08978X189/braindamage0f-21)France (https://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08978X189/braindamageon-21)Italy (https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B08978X189/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=23322 creativeASIN=%20%20B08978X189 linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21)Spain (https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B08978X189/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=%20%20B08978X189 linkCode=as2 tag=braidama01-21)ROGER WATERS US + THEM 2CD: Amazon.com (https://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089764DDJ/braindamage-20)Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B089764DDJ/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B089764DDJ linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21)Canada (https://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089764DDJ/braindamageon-20)Germany (https://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089764DDJ/braindamage0f-21)France (https://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B089764DDJ/braindamageon-21)Italy (https://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B089764DDJ/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=23322 creativeASIN=%20%20B089764DDJ linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21)Spain (https://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B089764DDJ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=%20%20B089764DDJ linkCode=as2 tag=braidama01-21)If your chosen retailer is yet to have the order ready to place, please try again later as they make the page live with all the details. Life, the Universe & Pink Floyd: Rare Hitchhikers Guide returns to vinyl in RSD
In these times when many of us are stuck at home, either due to lockdown, or self-isolating, we were delighted when Mark Naisbitt, a BD regular, got in touch with an article he'd written about the link between Pink Floyd, and Douglas Adams – specifically his Hitchhiker's Guide project which spanned book, radio, TV, film and commemorative towels (amongst other things). If anyone else out there fancies adding their thoughts about, well, anything Floyd related really, do please get in touch. We'd love to include your contributions to the site!To celebrate the 42nd anniversary of Douglas Adams epic Sci-fi comedy a rare, specially reworked version returns to vinyl which may be of interest to Pink Floyd fans. Author Douglas Adams and the band have a long time association. The original BBC radio series made its debut in 1978 and quickly became a cult hit evolving into books, TV and a couple of vinyl albums which Floyd fans would appreciate. Adams re-wrote the script for the first six episodes and they were recorded for the two albums, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (part one) by Original Records in 1979 and part two, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, following in 1980.So what's of interest to Floyd fans?Well, the original radio show ended with our heroes stealing a spaceship belonging to the admiral of a battle fleet. Adams, friends with Floyd at the time, altered the ending so that they steal a black, completely frictionless ship intended to crash through a star as part of the exotic light-show by the intergalactic rock band Disaster Area who are really Adams referencing Floyd going through the Wall-era protracted bust up at the time. Floyd, of course, previously released Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, which doubtless gave Adams the idea. The album version was the basis for the subsequent BBC TV series in 1981.The album features the famous cover, 'Don't Panic' ,in large friendly letters, by Hipgnosis, who worked on covers for Floyd ELO among many others. It also contains a line not in the radio version. Upon landing on the barren planet Magrathea, Arthur Dent mentions to Ford Prefect, Ford, do you realise that robot can hum like Pink Floyd? Douglas Adams maintained his association with Floyd and suggested the title The Division Bell to them. He also played guitar with the band on stage during one of the Earls Court Pulse gigs in 1994. It was on his 42nd birthday, a number of significance to Hitchhiker fans! This is documented in Nick Mason's book Inside Out and videos are around on YouTube.Sadly, Adams died suddenly of heart failure in 2001 aged only 49. David Gilmour played at his memorial service in 2001, and also at what would have been Adams's 60th birthday party in 2012. Adams official biography is called Wish You Were Here.As part of this year's Record Store Day (now delayed to June, subject to change depending on how the current situation develops) the original radio series are being re-released on vinyl by the Demon Music Group. Hitchhiker's Guide (the first book) is being coupled with the second book's series, The Restaurant At The End Of The Universe, on three 180g coloured vinyl LPs. After years of being expensive second-hand rarities, Floyd fans who enjoy the Guide can now get their hands on a copy. However, they're being limited to 750 copies…Oh well, grab one while you can! For this ageing Hitchhiker, it's almost worth getting a new vinyl deck to time-travel back to '78 with Arthur, Ford Zaphod for some fun, adventure and pretty wild things for less than 30 Altairian dollars a day…
Roger Waters performing during Assange march tomorrow
Announced today is a march for Julian Assange, which is taking place tomorrow (22nd February, 2020) in London, and as part of the announcement, Roger Waters has noted that he will be performing during the event. The march for Assange goes from Australia House, Aldwych, to Parliament Square. They note that Assange's full extradition trial begins the following Monday (24th February) and that the Trump administration is seeking to put Assange in jail for 175 years for publishing the Afghan and Iraq War Logs .They will assemble from 11:30am GMT, to leave Australia House at 12:30pm. Others participating will include Chrissie Hynde, Brian Eno, Vivienne Westwood and MIA.Obviously we don't know the nature of Roger's performance, but many of you will recall that he played Wish You Were Here in a similar, yet smaller, protest back in September 2019, again in London. Chrissie Hynde was (we understand) the only musician to perform any music. With thanks to Jon, we have a couple of pictures of Roger during the event:
Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon SACD reissued
To be released on January 24th, 2020, is a long-awaited reissue of the hybrid multichannel SACD (Super Audio CD) of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon. Originally released in the format (having a separate stereo layer playable on all normal CD players) in 2003 as mark of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the album, the SACD proved very popular. However, it has been out of print for some years, so the reissue later this month will be welcomed by many. The release is by Analogue Productions, and seems that they will be selling it exclusively through their AcousticSounds.com store (https://store.acousticsounds.com/index.cfm?get=detail Title_ID=133317), and preorders are now being taken. The mix is the same as the 2003 release, but we understand the packaging has been updated and the retailer are noting that it is presented in a deluxe format. SACDs provide high audio quality, and in certain cases (such as this, and the other Floyd SACD, Wish You Were Here) multi-channel, surround mixes too. The DSOTM and WYWH SACDs both sound superb, and it is worth checking to see if you have suitable equipment to play multichannel SACDs. Many Sony CD players are compatible with SACDs, and indeed Playstation 3 consoles all play SACDs with no problem. Other makes of CD/DVD/Blu-ray players do support the format, but this varies from model to model. If we hear of other retailers who are selling this title, we will let you know.
