Squaring The Circle: The Story of Hipgnosis

Just given an airing at the Rodeo Screening Room in Los Angeles, California, on August 24th as part of the Telluride Film Festival, is a new documentary from celebrated photographer, creative director and filmmaker Anton Corbijn. Squaring The Circle: The Story Of Hipgnosis, which is 101 minutes long, tells the story of Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, the creative geniuses behind the iconic album art design studio, Hipgnosis, responsible for some of the most recognisable album covers of all time. They formed Hipgnosis in Cambridge during the ferment of the sixties and became rock royalty during the boom time of the seventies. They conjured into existence sights that no one had previously thought possible, produced visuals which popularised music that had previously been considered fringe, and were at the white-hot centre of the maddest, funniest and most creative era in the history of popular music. During this period, record companies didn’t dictate to acts like Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Paul McCartney what their LP covers should look like – Storm and Po did. They made money; they lost money. They did great things; they did silly things. They fell out bitterly; they made up. They never played a note, but they changed music. The film features brand new interviews with Roger Waters, David Gilmour & Nick Mason of Pink Floyd, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant of Led Zeppelin, Paul McCartney, Peter Gabriel, Graham Gouldman of 10cc, Noel Gallagher, and many more. As yet we don’t have details of any upcoming screenings, or streaming possibilities, although we suspect such information will be available soon. In the meantime, here’s a quick look at part of the documentary, with Storm, Po, David, Roger and Nick all talking about the cover to Pink Floyd’s Atom Heart Mother: SQUARING THE CIRCLE (the story of hipgnosis) | Clip | Anton Corbijn | Raindog Films (https://vimeo.com/743119190) from Raindog Films (https://vimeo.com/user157295855) on Vimeo (https://vimeo.com).

Pink Floyd’s A Great Day For Freedom 2022 – video

In what seems quite a coincidence, bearing in mind our earlier story, this evening a newly reworked video for A Great Day For Freedom 2022 has just been released. With the video, is accompanying wording talking about the background to it: Using A Great Day For Freedom as the B-side of the new Pink Floyd single, Hey Hey, Rise Up seemed like an obvious and relevant choice. And David has, for some time, wanted to record a simpler more direct version of the song. So here it is, with a newly edited video taken from a Pulse rehearsal during Pink Floyd’s two-week run at Earl’s Court, London, in 1994. The recording, using the original drums and bass by Nick and David, has keyboards by Rick and backing vocals by Claudia, Sam and Durga taken from the Pulse rehearsals. New piano, Prophet 5 synthesiser and Hammond are played by David, as on the original demo. Without further ado, here’s the new video:

In depth feature on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side in new Classic Rock Magazine

(number 303, cover date Summer 2022) of the magazine Classic Rock (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?). As you can see, issue 303’s cover stars are Pink Floyd: they bring you the story of the birth of The Dark Side Of The Moon. We hear (from someone who has an early, subscriber copy) that it is a nicely done article, with plenty of unusual pictures illustrating the twelve-page piece. Elsewhere in the magazine, they look at how Pete Townshend’s abandonment of a science-fiction rock opera led to The Who’s Who’s Next. Also how, after years of mud slinging, power grabs, law suits and general animosity, Journey somehow managed to make a new album. After more than a decade away, Porcupine Tree are back with a new album. Has their time finally come? Classic Rock finds out. There’s also all the normal features, including an extensive review section. You can order the magazine direct, worldwide, through this link (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?).

David Gilmour special in new Total Guitar magazine

new issue – cover date July 2022, issue 359 – of Total Guitar magazine, which majors on David Gilmour and Pink Floyd (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6937159/total-guitar-magazine-single-issue.thtml). Over 23 well illustrated pages, with some shots we’ve not seen before, they trace Gilmour’s evolution as a guitarist via 20 classic Pink Floyd tracks – from 1969’s The Nile Song all the way through to Hey Hey Rise Up. Along the way, Gilmour’s genius in landmark songs such as Echoes, Breathe, Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Wish You Were Here, Comfortably Numb and Another Brick In The Wall is celebrated by a host of guitarists – Kirk Hammett, Matt Bellamy, Sophie Lloyd, Derek Trucks, Jon Gomm, Steve Rothery of Marillion, Geordie Greep of Black Midi and Stu Mackenzie of King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard. Gilmour’s story of his life in Pink Floyd and beyond is told in his own words, and an insight into the guitarist’s creative process is provided in an exclusive interview with Bob Ezrin, producer of Floyd’s legendary double album The Wall and the last three albums of the band’s career. Finally, in an additional eight-page in-depth lesson, they profile the details of David’s playing technique. From his trademark wide-interval string bends to his melodic bluesy phrasing, they say they cover what you need to know to play like him. You can order this online through this direct link (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6937159/total-guitar-magazine-single-issue.thtml) saving you the effort of tracking it down in a store, or if you live outside the UK.
