(number 303, cover date Summer 2022) of the magazine Classic Rock (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?). As you can see, issue 303âs cover stars are Pink Floyd: they bring you the story of the birth of The Dark Side Of The Moon. We hear (from someone who has an early, subscriber copy) that it is a nicely done article, with plenty of unusual pictures illustrating the twelve-page piece. Elsewhere in the magazine, they look at how Pete Townshendâs abandonment of a science-fiction rock opera led to The Whoâs Whoâs Next. Also how, after years of mud slinging, power grabs, law suits and general animosity, Journey somehow managed to make a new album. After more than a decade away, Porcupine Tree are back with a new album. Has their time finally come? Classic Rock finds out. There’s also all the normal features, including an extensive review section. You can order the magazine direct, worldwide, through this link (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?).

Aubrey Powell: Through the Prism – talk & book signing
Apologies for the lack of advance notice, but we’ve just found out this morning, that this evening – Thursday, May 19th – at 6:30pm, Hipgnosis co-founder, creative designer, photographer and filmmaker Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell talks about his recently published book Through the Prism, published by Thames & Hudson, in the Cafe of The Photographer’s Gallery in London (https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/whats-on/aubrey-powell-through-prism-talk-book-signing) which is close to Oxford Circus tube station. The event is free to attend. In the talk, Powell will share intriguing stories of creative endeavour, volatile relationships, excessive lifestyles and bizarre events from the world of rock in conversation with author and music journalist Mark Blake. The gallery preview the event by saying: “Hipgnosis transformed album art with their designs for Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Genesis, Paul McCartney and Wings and so many more. Brutally honest, entertaining and insightful, Po tells the incredible stories of creative endeavour, volatile alliances, high-risk/high-altitude photoshoots and downright bizarre events from the halcyon days of rockânâroll. From his unique insider perspective, Po sets many records straight, bringing revelatory new details to legendary tales, including the genesis of The Dark Side Of The Moon, Houses Of The Holy, The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway, and Peter Gabrielâs trio âCarâ / âScratchâ / âMeltâ, each evidenced with photographs, documents, artefacts and artworks from Poâs own archive. “Mark Blake’s work has been published in Mojo, The Times, Rolling Stone and Classic Rock. His books include the best-selling âPigs Might Fly: The Inside Story Of Pink Floydâ and âBring It On Homeâ, a critically-acclaimed biography of Led Zeppelinâs notorious manager, Peter Grant.” For more information about the event, and getting to the gallery, please visit ThePhotographersGallery.org.uk (https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/whats-on/aubrey-powell-through-prism-talk-book-signing). Pink Floyd “reinvent themselves” – German Classic Rock magazine
start of March, we noted that the UK’s edition of Classic Rock included a detailed, twelve page article written by Pink Floyd biographer Mark Blake (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyd-reinvent-themselves-in-new-issue-of-classic-rock-mag.html) taking a close look at life for the band immediately after Syd Barrett left it. The article – now translated into German for that country’s version of the magazine – investigates how the band got back on their feet following Syd’s departure, and shows how they reinvented themselves. Blake details how this came via strange, afternoon shows for school kids in the Netherlands, bizarre promo videos, unusual soundtrack albums, and shows which were rather avant-garde – as well as albums which showed the development of the band’s sound. As ever, Blake’s writing proves enlightening and entertaining, peppered with comments from the musicians themselves. Well worth a read! Elsewhere in the magazine are features on Uriah Heep, Rob Halford, UFO, Thunder, and Suzi Quatro, plus plenty of other articles to keep you busy. The magazine is now available from all good German stores; alternatively, you can buy individual issues (worldwide) from this direct link (https://classicrock.net/produkt/classic-rock-nr-98-rob-halford-bekenntnisse-des-metal-gottes-ausgabe-04-2021/). Our thanks to Michael Nickel for the information!
Pink Floyd “reinvent themselves” in new issue of Classic Rock magazine
Classic Rock magazine (cover date April 2021, issue number 286) (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?) is well worth tracking down. A detailed, twelve page article written by Pink Floyd biographer Mark Blake takes a close look at life for the band immediately after Syd Barrett left it. Set The Controls For The Moon investigates how the band got back on their feet following Syd’s departure, and shows how they reinvented themselves. Elsewhere in the magazine is a review of the new book, The Lyrics of Syd Barrett (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/the-lyrics-of-syd-barrett-new-book-out-now.html), a large feature on Kate Bush’s (rather limited) live excursions, and an equally large interview with Vince Furnier. There’s also features on Uriah Heep, Metallica, and The Pretty Things, plus plenty of other articles to keep you busy. The magazine is now available from all good UK stores, and will be in selected outlets worldwide in due course as an import. Alternatively, you can buy individual issues (again, worldwide) from this direct link (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Classic-Rock-Print-Back-Issues/).
Two current German music magazines feature Pink Floyd
With thanks to Michael Nickel, we have two bits of news aimed principally at our friends in Germany. In that country’s stores at the moment are two magazines which may well take your interest. The first is Classic Rock Magazine (cover date September 2020), which has a multiple page report on the genesis of Pink Floyd’s 1983 album, The Final Cut – the last with Roger Waters still in the band. “Pink Floyd: The last common litter and THE FINAL CUT” delves deep into the background of the album. Elsewhere in the magazine is a major feature on Genesis, looking at their album, Selling England By The Pound. More details including ordering online through ClassicRock.net (https://classicrock.net/produkt/classic-rock-nr-92-genesis-auf-dem-absoluten-hoehepunkt-mit-selling-england-by-the-pound-ausgabe-09-20-september-2020-inkl-cd/). The other magazine that you might want to pick up is Rolling Stone’s German edition (again with a cover date of September 2020). In an article headed “Pink Floyd: This crazy diamond”, they take a multiple page look at the genesis of a different album – in their case (and hinted to by the title of the article) it is 1975’s Wish You Were Here, which they describe as “a sublime album about the burning of youth – and a hymn to the lost Syd Barrett”. Jimi Hendrix is featured elsewhere in the magazine, and indeed Jimi is the cover star. More details and ordering via RollingStone.de (https://www.rollingstone.de/rolling-stone-im-september-2020-titelthema-jimi-hendrix-2023837/).

Two UK magazines include Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets interviews
A couple of established, and well respected, UK music magazines have just been published, and include interviews with Nick Mason and his Saucerful Of Secrets. With the unexpected postponement of the release of Live At The Roundhouse (originally due to appear on April 17th, but moved to September 18th) (latest/nick-masons-saucerful-of-secrets-live-at-the-roundhouse-2lp-2cd-dvd-blu-ray-ci-2.html), magazines and their advanced deadlines have resulted in these articles appearing now, despite the release being five months later. Still, it gives us something to read and enjoy during the lockdown so many of us are experiencing at present!First off is issue 108 of Prog Magazine, which has a detailed, four-page interview with Nick. He talks extensively and candidly about the early days of the band, and about Syd Barrett. He also of course talks about his current project, the Saucers, and has him pondering on future tours – he points out that there is plenty of early material that they've yet to explore that will keep us going for a while . When asked if there was an urge to do new music, he noted that there [wasn't] particularly. That might be something to look at one day, but for the moment there's a lot to be done with this [the Saucers] . For us, this is great news, and a very positive note suggesting that the project is still in its early stages.Elsewhere in the magazine they celebrate 50 years of prog legends Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Carl Palmer reflects on the band's career and announces some amazing plans to resurrect the band for their Golden Anniversary. Plus there's exclusive new interviews with Trevor Rabin, Alan Parsons Project, The Orb and loads more. With few stores open, you'll be pleased to hear you can order it online, for delivery worldwide, through this direct link at MyFavouriteMagazines.co.uk (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Prog-Print-Back-Issues/prog-issue-108/).Issue 20 of Planet Rock magazine is the other one of note that has just appeared on the shelves of the few stockists still open in the UK, but also available to purchase online. It features an eight-page interview with Nick, conducted by biographer Mark Blake, who talks about the early days of the Floyd, and brings the story up to date with the Saucers, of whom Nick says I never expected this to happen. We're like an ageing start-up. He also speculates on what might have happened had Rick Wright still been with us, when the Saucers came together – and what they might have been called…The interview is typically fascinating, propelled by Mark Blake's questions (he wrote the excellent Pigs Might Fly, you may recall), covering Nick's views on Pink Floyd, the genesis of the Saucers, and touring plans for the band (pandemics, of course, permitting). The magazine's review pages include a five-star review of Live At The Roundhouse, calling it a vital testament to all that was remarkable about early Floyd , calling it an aural trip and a thrilling…joyous and monumental recording . Elsewhere in the magazine is a huge feature on 50 years of Judas Priest, and features on Kiss, Manowar and Iron Maiden, amongst others. You can order Classic Rock magazine online, for delivery worldwide, through this direct link at GreatMagazines.co.uk (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/planet-rock-issue-20).LIVE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE ORDERING INFORMATION:For those who are yet to do so, here's a reminder that you can order the various editions through the following direct links, taking advantage of Amazon's pre-order price guarantee so you will automatically pay the lowest asking price between placing your order, and release, whilst giving Brain Damage much needed help with running costs without costing you any extra. We really appreciate it too! It also gives you something to look forward to when hopefully the global situation has eased and returned to some sense of normality.LIVE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE – Blu-ray: Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XWMFWG/braindamage-20)Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B083XWMFWG/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XWMFWG linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21)Canada (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XWMFWG/braindamageon-20)Germany (http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XWMFWG/braindamage0f-21)France (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XWMFWG/braindamageon-21)Italy (http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B083XWMFWG/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=23322 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XWMFWG linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21)Spain (http://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B083XWMFWG/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XWMFWG linkCode=as2 tag=braidama01-21)LIVE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE – 2CD/DVD: Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XTGCLZ/braindamage-20)Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B083XTGCLZ/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XTGCLZ linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21)Canada (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XTGCLZ/braindamageon-20)Germany (http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XTGCLZ/braindamage0f-21)France (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XTGCLZ/braindamageon-21)Italy (http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B083XTGCLZ/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=23322 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XTGCLZ linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21)Spain (http://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B083XTGCLZ/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XTGCLZ linkCode=as2 tag=braidama01-21)LIVE AT THE ROUNDHOUSE – DOUBLE VINYL LP: Amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XVFP2D/braindamage-20)Amazon UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B083XVFP2D/ref%3Das_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=1634 creative=19450 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XVFP2D linkCode=as2 tag=braindamage-21)Canada (http://www.amazon.ca/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XVFP2D/braindamageon-20)Germany (http://www.amazon.de/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XVFP2D/braindamage0f-21)France (http://www.amazon.fr/exec/obidos/ASIN/B083XVFP2D/braindamageon-21)Italy (http://www.amazon.it/gp/product/B083XVFP2D/ref=as_li_tf_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3370 creative=23322 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XVFP2D linkCode=as2 tag=bradamonl-21)Spain (http://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B083XVFP2D/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8 camp=3626 creative=24822 creativeASIN=%20%20B083XVFP2D linkCode=as2 tag=braidama01-21)
