Floydian Slip (https://www.floydianslip.com/news/2019/09/review-roger-waters-us-them/), three weeks ahead of its release last night in cinemas across the world. Further screenings are to come over the next few days – details of when and where at RogerWatersUsAndThem.com (http://www.rogerwatersusandthem.com). A piece of key advice for you, if you are going to see it in a cinema this week: don’t leave during the titles – there’s an absorbing, additional documentary looking at the show, and the rehearsals of the music, which follows on. Anyway, with thanks to Floydian Slip, here’s Ed’s report… The intersection of beautifully crafted sound and footage combined with director Sean Evans‘ ability to turn an action-packed, live performance into an atmospheric, ethereal experience raises the bar for concert video. Recorded during a series of June 2018, Amsterdam performances, Roger Waters: Us + Them is so exquisitely constructed it emancipates the film from traditional and repetitive templates employed in comparable efforts: the music takes center stage as the expression of ideas Waters and the audience wish to converse about unfold in an exchange between the twain: it takes a talent of Evans’ caliber to capture that. This film documents that dynamic with great cinematic power. Within the film’s first couple of minutes, the crisp and brutally visceral sound of clapping thunder blends seamlessly into the sound of artillery, garnishing footage of a child sitting on a shore (part of the storylines that run on the background screens during the live performance). This brief introduction segues into the visual of Roger Waters taking the stage. In that brief convergence of audiovisual elements Evans manages to bewitch the audience, realigning their senses for an unusually gripping concert documentary. The audience plays a central role in this film. It is never veiled in a sea of black. Instead, its interaction with the artist is central to the story and its voice is accentuated by the colors that flood the arena as this emotive call and response transpires.

On The (Ski) Run – limited edition Pink Floyd Dark Side skis created
With the Northern Hemisphere ski season just beginning in a number of countries, a new, officially licensed set of skis – which have gone on sale today – will bring the Dark Side to all that white stuff on the slopes! IcelanticSkis (https://www.icelanticskis.com/blogs/one-degree-blog/icelantic-x-pink-floyd-collab) have created their Limited Edition Icelantic X Pink Floyd Nomad 105 collaboration – and the skis look great. Icelantic note that the skis “feature George Hardie and British design group Hipgnosis’ original sketches on the tails, and the now iconic prism/colour beam image on the tips of Icelantic’s top-selling freeride tool, the Nomad 105. Our Design Director has re-imagined the beams to reflect off the edges of the skis and cascade toward each other, creating a relationship between concept and final artwork.” As you’ll see from the video below, the skis are handmade (in Denver, Colorado, USA) and come with a three year warranty. They come in five lengths and can be ordered now. However, as they are a limited edition, if you DO want to snap up a pair, we suggest you don’t leave it too long! Roger Waters joins Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets in NYC last night
As the North American leg of the 2019 Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets tour (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/index.php%22) heads towards it’s conclusion, prior to the string of UK dates at the end of April/start of May (with a number of European dates in July), last night saw the band at the Beacon Theatre in New York City. Much to the surprise of the audience, as the band readied themselves to start Set The Controls For The Heart Of The Sun, a familiar face appeared on stage, as BD contributor, Ken Langford explains: Roger delayed the start of the song by making maybe a minute’s worth of comments. He then proceeded to sing the lyrics for Set The Controls, to bang the gong, to almost leave before the song was over, and then to finish out the song. The mallet for the gong broke at one point, and I said to my companion Break The Hammer Again. Listen to the recording of 11th March 1973 for the reference. He hugged every member of the band, and appeared again on stage for the final bow after Point Me At The Sky. A fantastic treat for all in attendance! Nick and his band are back at the Beacon tonight, but we suspect lightning won’t strike twice – guest appearances like this are normally very much one-off events. Videos and pictures are starting to appear of the appearance, and this article at the Brooklyn Vegan is a great place to start (http://www.brooklynvegan.com/roger-water-joined-nick-mason-to-play-pink-floyd-at-beacon-theatre-watch/). Happy birthday to David Gilmour!
Our very best wishes, and many happy returns, to David Gilmour who is celebrating his birthday today (March 6th)! Born and raised in Cambridge, David became involved with various bands in the area, principally Jokers Wild who were a popular draw when they played, before joining Pink Floyd in 1968. More recent years have seen David concentrating on his solo career, and helping out chums on their musical projects on an ad hoc basis. In 2019, some 120+ of David’s guitars were auctioned, raising $21.5 million (including some record-breaking amounts for individual instruments) which went to the environmental charity ClientEarth (https://clientearth.org). He also appeared as a guest performer at the Richard Thompson 70th Birthday Concert (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-guest-appearance-at-richard-thompson-70th-birthday-co.html), playing Dimming Of The Day and Fat Old Sun, and joining the encore. In 2020, on February 25th, shortly before all activity stopped around the world due to Coronavirus, David joined the stellar bill for the Mick Fleetwood Friends Celebrate The Music of Peter Green and The Early Years of Fleetwood Mac (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html) concert at London's Palladium, which has now been released as a 4LP, 2CD, Blu-ray and book box set (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html). The concert was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity (https://teenagecancertrust.org). It just remains for us to wish David a very happy day!
