Newcastle ready to hijack transfer as they search for Callum Wilson replacement

Newcastle need goals

It is no exaggeration to say that Newcastle’s survival in the Premier League this season depends on whether they can find a good replacement for Callum Wilson in the January transfer window.

Their chief goal threat was forced off with injury against Manchester United, going down with no one near him.

After the clash, Eddie Howe confirmed Newcastle fans’ worst fears, revealing:

Callum’s injury looks severe, weeks maybe months. I feared for him when he went down with nobody around him. A pull. Allan, I don’t think is as serious.

“We are thin on the ground in terms of bodies.”

So, who could they look to for goals?

Replacement found?

101 covered the report yesterday that Newcastle were making little progress with a move for their no.1 target, Benfica striker Darwin Nunez.

But now, if reports are to be believed, they may have turned their attentions elsewhere, and are looking to take advantage of a current transfer stalemate.

The player in question? Zenit St Petersburg forward Sardar Azmoun.

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are looking to take advantage of the current impasse that has been reached between Lyon and Zenit for the soon to be free agent’s signature, and bring in the Iranian striker for a minimal fee.

As per the report, Lyon refuse to pay anything more than 3 million pounds this January for his signature, which has left Newcastle with the opportunity to gazump them, and in turn land themselves a striker on the cheap.

Alternatively, The Telegraph report that Arsenal duo Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Eddie Nketiah are both being looked at as potential additions, although the situation is very different with the pair of them.

Would Azmoun fit the bill?
