Welcome back everyone to another Beneath the Surface session. Today I am joined by the wonderful Luchi off the back of his emotive new single ‘Fix this Love’. We dive into all things music below, so get comfortable and let’s get to it!
What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
I’m not sure there was ever a point that I made a conscious decision to pursue music as I have music in my DNA, I’ve always been drawn to music and feel music in my soul. I always knew that my life would be creating music so I guess I was lucky in that way that I never had that struggle of not having direction or an idea of where I was heading. I just had a natural ability to write songs which I have honed over the years but I started writing aged 13 in my bedroom and without any training or any idea, I was automatically writing in a structure and knew what I was doing without knowing haha. I know that it is a gift from a higher power that it just comes natural to me. I also hear music in my head, when I’m writing or even just driving in my car, I can hear the full song in my head and I then just have to get that out
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
I would say it’s raw, honest, vulnerable, soulful pop. I love creating pop music because I don’t feel boxed into any genre. That’s the great thing about pop if you can dip your toes into all genres and pull some country elements if you want, or some rnb, or rock, it keeps it fresh and allows you to be able to be inspired by whatever works best for the song.
What does your creative process look like?
To be honest, it’s different every time. Mostly it’s a melody or lyric that I hear in my head, and then the song builds from there, but there have been times where I’ve written to a track or a beat, and that’s inspired me in a particular direction. I have hundreds of voice notes on my phone of melody ideas that come to me and a bunch of lyrical ideas in my notes as inspiration comes from all different places in life. With Fix This Love, I just sat at my keyboard and started singing; it just flowed out of me. All the emotions were there, and it was one of those songs that wrote itself. I love it when that happens as it just comes out of you and you feel like you’re just a channel for the song, it’s a bit of an out-of-body experience and usually, those are the songs that people connect with the most because they are just real and authentic.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Oh I could give you a list as long as my arm. I usually say Kelly Clarkson or P!nk because they are my OGs but to mix it up, I’d say Diane Warren. As a songwriter, I adore her writing and think she is absolutely incredible and it would be an honour to work her and learn from her. Ines recently listening to Taylor Swifts new songs from the vault on her rerelease of 1989 and I hear the song say don’t go and I instantly loved the song. Then I seen on instagram later that night she had written it with Diane and I was like no wonder I loved it. I’ve spoke to her in the instagram DMs but not plucked up the courage to ask for a writing session yet so yes, I’m putting that out into the universe now. I’m always more interested in the writers behind the songs than other artists because songwriting is a big passion of mine
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
Just a thank you for sticking with me for so long and the support means the world to me. I love creating and connecting with you all and it makes it all worthwhile to hear how much you connect with my music and it brings healing to your life. Each one of you hold a special place in my heart.
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
I’d say don’t force it. If it’s not happening at that moment, just take a breather, go for a walk, get some food, don’t put too much pressure on as I think that just makes it worse and any songs that I’ve done under pressure, usually I don’t like at the end of it and they end up on the shelf. It’s supposed to be fun and open being creative so if you’re losing that, it may be time for a break and live life and collect the experiences for you to be able to come back and use for writing. If it’s in your soul, it will always come back when it’s the right time.
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
Well this is the last single of 2023 from me so I’m going to take a bit of time off for my birthday and Christmas, my birthday is the 21st December so I’m heading back to Glasgow to spend some time with my family and friends and then in 2024, I’ll be back with a bang. The songs I have lined up are so exciting and different for me so all I’ll say is hold on tight cause it’s gonna be a fun ride.
