Beneath the Surface with Berne.

Maltese born, London living, alt pop duo Berne have recently released their second single, To The Lions. I sat down with the pair to learn a little more about the band, the creative process and what 2020 has in store for them as we delve a little deeper, Beneath the Surface.

1. What would you say first got you into the world of music and who would you class as your inspirations?

My first introduction to music was when I started taking piano lessons as a child and then singing lessons as a teenager. In my early teens, I discovered Vanessa Carlton and realised that playing and singing at the same time was a thing. Some years later, a friend introduced me to Regina Spektor and that was an incredibly key moment for my music career in terms of songwriting and performing.

As for Gian, he was introduced to playing music through post-punk bands such as Joy Division, Editors, Interpol and Radiohead. It unveiled a different kind of playing and a new genre of music which he loved. Throughout the years, he has taken inspiration from these bands and developed his own style which radiates our songs.

2. How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

Musically, we are influenced by different artists, although largely within the same genre. I bring my Agnes Obel and Adna influences and Gian brings his Joy Division and Radiohead influences and it morphs into something that we like.

Lyrically, we are inspired by society and the environment and want our music to be a vehicle for creating change in our planet. As individuals, we feel encouraged to question the status quo and often think about the impact our actions have on our planet. Naturally, this made its way into our songs.

3. What does your creative process look like?

Our writing sessions start with jamming for an hour or two and generally, something always sticks. We then continue to develop the idea musically ad lyrically until we have a demo. We go on to produce the track, and finally record it. At this point, we would start gathering visual ideas for music videos and promo shoots and everything comes together some 3 months later.

4. Who would you most like to collaborate with? (Let’s send it out into the universe and make it happen!)

Ry X makes music that is deep, awe-inspiring and simply beautiful. We recently watched his live show with London Contemporary Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall and it filled our hearts with so much warmth. It would be an absolute dream come true to collaborate with Ry X and I’m sure we’d make something beautiful.

5. What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

Every single day, we are faced with so many opportunities to make a change, be it by choosing which companies to shop from and industries to support to how kind and compassionate we are with each other. We believe that collectively we can make the world a better place for all its inhabitants and every little change we make helps. It’s not about a few people doing something perfectly but many doing it imperfectly.

6.What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity and get over a writer’s block?

I experienced a very long writer’s block some years ago and it really drained me. What seems to have worked for me is searching for and finding my own voice in music. My advice would be to filter out what’s not important to you and only focus on what’s important and hopefully, creativity will follow.

7. What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to and what are you currently working on?

We’ve got so many exciting plans for the year which we can’t wait to share! Over the next few weeks, we will continue to share material around To The Lions. The music video, which we made with MarieClaire (@mar.ie.claire) is out on Tuesday 24th March. We also have a few surprises and collaborations in store too! We’re in the process of finalising our next releases and producing a brand new live show. We would love it if you came to chat to us at one of our shows!
