Good afternoon friends! It’s the beginning of a brand new week and we are kicking things off with a double whammy of a Beneath The Surface feature. Today I am joined by not one but two incredibly talented artists after the recent release of their duet filled EP ‘Take 2’.
It gives me great pleasure to introduce Pritt & S.A.M.
What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
Pritt: My parents always played Tamil songs around the house, that’s pretty much what I grew up on and as I went to school, I realised my dad had very good taste in music in both Tamil and Western music so I think the spark in me was developing from birth waiting for someone to light the fire. I love music and anything that gives me that tingly warm feeling pretty much inspires me to widen my repertoire!
S.A.M: Initially I grew up quite involved in church, especially with music playing keys and guitar. This paired with my school life with friends, starting to rap and just lay down lyrics from about year 4- was really the package that sparked the introduction to music I guess. I saw a lot of people doing it around me who weren’t necessarily like me- a South Asian Tamil artist. So I guess I enjoyed being somewhat of an outlier amongst my peers and it kinda drove me.
How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
Pritt: Versatile, and not the usual. I think people are obviously expecting Eastern meets Western twist but a girl can do everything and still circle back to her roots!
S.A.M: The music I am currently creating could probably be described as versatile. However, there is something for everyone, I have always explored my vocal capabilities across genres and I’m at the stage in my music career where I think S.A.M is the sound and genre I want people to take in, not necessarily the type of genre he is on. I’ve cultivated fans from so many different standpoints from Afro-Dancehall to hard trap and witty rap.
What does your creative process look like?
Pritt: Honestly it changes sooo much! I don’t think I have one process anymore. I write a lot of my music on real life stories and take a lot of interest in seeing different perspectives to each story I think. It’s not conventional and that’s why I love it. I’ve stopped restricting myself. Someone asked me if I was not bored of writing from other people’s perspectives but my own and I literally said ‘so? Creation can also come from imagination’.
S.A.M: Depending on the day, it varies but recently I’m a big fan of catching the vibe. I’ll usually just lay some melodies or freestyle some gibberish to start with and then there’s always beauty behind the madness somehow.
Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Pritt: FRANK OCEAN, please before he retires lol
S.A.M: TORY LANEZ hit me up please!! There you go it’s out there now, hopefully he sees this!
What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
Pritt: Please keep going! Don’t let time or age or your current circumstances affect your future – life is short so LIVE IT
S.A.M: Don’t let them tell you, you can’t if you tryna do something that isn’t the norm with your life. I appreciate every single person who has ever streamed, shared or even just liked a song of mine. Keep watching the journey bout to be prolific.
What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
Pritt: Take a break from social media, and enjoy the moment you are living. There is nothing worse than going outside for fresh air and having to post it to let everyone know. I also think read books and maybe even follow my creative process and looking at things from a different perspective.
S.A.M: Everybody goes through it so remember you ain’t the only one. I think it’s important to take time out and live life sometimes, get some inspiration- no point locking yourself away in the studio for hours if you running out of things to write about.
What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
Pritt: A lot of stuff, coming back with solo projects, collaborations (international) and working on some visuals that may catch you off guard! Will keep you posted haha.
S.A.M: I may just have a couple of other collab projects coming out, just maybe. Everybody knows summer is a S.A.M season so expect a big summer single… or maybe 2.
