Beneath The Surface: EZYBLK

Back again and raring to go this Wednesday evening with another new Beneath The Surface feature. This time we are joined by the sensational EZYBLK, tune into what we chatted about below!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
I knew I was meant to do music from a young age, like really young. And then I had my first live performance when I was in year 3. My teacher, Mr. Evans, introduced me to the school choir and had me perform ‘I want you back’ by The Jackson 5 in front of all the parents. There’s actually a YouTube video of it out there to be found for those who go looking. But I’ve really been singing and rapping all my life, I don’t even remember the very first thing that sparked my interest to it, I like to think it was just meant for me.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
I’m not sticking to a specific genre so you can kinda say my music is experimental, but it’s still vibes. I don’t like being placed in a box or a category, I just go with whatever flow I’m feeling. And that’s what I love about music, it’s art, you don’t have to go about it in a specific way. You’re just able to express whatever you want in whatever form. I’ve got songs that are a lot more meaningful and songs that tackle real-life problems, in addition to songs that are fun and about the luxury in life. So there’s a bit of everything and I try to mix it up with different sounds and interesting beats.

What does your creative process look like?
It’s a bit divided, sometimes we have a session and I write right there and then, I can do a song from start to finish in one go. Other times I might hear some random songs and get inspiration to some bars so I’ll write them down and pick them up again later. I also watch a lot of movies to get inspiration for my lyrics and I try to keep up with what’s going on so my bars stay relevant. I think it’s easier for my fans to connect with the music if they are able to connect and relate to the music. But at the same time, I’m just trying to have fun with it. It’s been my dream from when I was young so I’m just enjoying that I’m able to do it.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
Oooh, if I was able to pick from the top shelf it would be J-Hus, hands down. I’m a big fan of his.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
I don’t really like the word fans, I don’t see them as my fans, I see them as my family. People that take the time out of their day to listen and share my stuff, which they don’t have to, I just find it really heartwarming and I’m so appreciative. So to my family that always supports me, I would like to say that I just really appreciate the love that they’re showing and the backing, it just makes the whole thing so much better, that’s family shit. And I’ll also add that I’ve got so much more coming so they better be ready!

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?
Leave it. Do something completely different so you’re able to refresh your mind and bring in some new inspiration. If you’re not able to finish it when you go back to it then maybe it’s not meant to be. For me, music has endless possibilities. I don’t make 1 song a month, I might make 20 half-finished songs. Some of them I’m able to take further and some of them I might save for later.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?
I’ve got a few more singles to drop before my first EP, ‘EZYWRLD: Trips and Routes, comes out this summer, which I’m really ecstatic about. Then I also have some songs lined up after that. I got so much to unleash and seeing it come to life this year is really exciting. I can’t wait for people to hear the different vibes and I know that I’ve got something for everyone. So whatever you like to listen to, I’ll have something to please your ear.
