Beneath The Surface: Emilia Tarrant

Hello one and all and welcome to this weeks Beneath The Surface feature. This week I am joined by the hugely talented Emilia Tarrant on the day of her ‘Honeymoon Phase’ single release. Her first release this year, she joins me for a quick chinwag and lets us in on all the juicy details of whats in store this year. So get comfy and lets dive right in!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?
Playing, listening and writing music came naturally; as soon as I sat at the piano for the first time, I knew it was for me. Growing up, I was surrounded by music in the family home, and listened to all sorts of genres, from Indie Rock, to Pop, for example. Some of these artists, and those that inspired me to become a musician myself were Coldplay, Birdy, Moby, Jack Johnson, Doves etc.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?
I love to experiment with many different genres when I write songs, but the music I’m currently creating, and releasing is definitely in the pop ballad genre; the genre I always revert back to when both listening to and writing music! I mainly write with narratives, usually about relationships, mental health and experiences, and that’s why they’re often quite emotional.

What does your creative process look like?
My process for writing new music is quite random – I never schedule sessions, unless I’m writing with others. I start writing when I have the urge to, normally when I need to get some emotion off my chest. I’ll take an experience I want to talk about, play the piano or guitar randomly to find chord progressions I like, and sing random lyrics over the top until something cool comes out; as I said, I have a random process. Works for me though!

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)
What a question! There are so many artists I’d love to collaborate with for different reasons. My top choice would probably have to be Moby; to sit in a studio with him and create music would be a dream! He is such an incredible producer. I’d have to say Coldplay would have to be another of my top choices. They have been my favourite band forever and to collaborate on a song would be out of this world for me.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?
Just a massive thank you and keep streaming! To all the people who have stayed with me since my debut release ‘If You Want Love’ back in 2019, it means the world. I can’t wait to share more new music that I have been working on recently and hopefully play live for you in the coming summer.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

To get over writer’s block, I tend to give myself time away from songwriting! Sometimes I have nothing to say, or any ideas for lyrics and that’s okay. Putting pressure on myself only makes it worse. I often feel ready to write again when other people inspire me to. Listening to my favourite artists and new music I have fallen in love with motivates me to try again. I also feed off of past experiences if I have no current story to tell. This has been especially useful during the COVID-19 pandemic when life has been quite dull!

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

I have so much planned! I am planning to release more music in the coming months, leading up to my debut EP which will be out later this year. I am dying to play live gigs again too; it’s been too long since I last did that!
