Beneath The Surface: Ci Majr

Hello and welcome to another Beneath The Surface session. This time I am joined by the bright, bouncy and extremely talented Ci Majr. We have a nice little chinwag and I get to share her latest zesty little dance-pop number! So check it out below.

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

My parents put me in classical piano lessons at a young age and at some point I started listening to Alicia Keys who showed me how absolutely cool it could be to play the piano and that I could write my own songs and sing along while I played.

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

It’s always so hard to describe your own music! I’d say it’s definitely indie pop but swings between dance-pop and electropop. In all honesty, it’s whatever comes out with the feeling of the song I’m writing!

What does your creative process look like?

I’ll either get an idea for lyrics or for an instrumental, so I’ll go to my home studio and either sit at the piano to flush out my lyrical ideas or pop open my laptop to get a demo of the instrumental laid down. Once I start a song I will usually aggressively fixate on it until it feels “done” enough. I love the span of 48-72 hours when I’m creating a new song. It’s almost like a high honestly. Within that time span, I’ll usually bounce out versions as I go, so that whenever I’m doing chores or in the car, I can listen to the song and make a mental list of updates I want to make. Once it’s finished, I usually send the demo to my closest family and friends for feedback!

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Christine and the Queens!! I would ABSOLUTELY DIE. She is such an idol to me as a somewhat androgynous genderqueer person in pop.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

A big thank you for the support and I hope you’re excited about the EP drop because it’s SO GOOD!

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

If you’re not in a serious time crunch just take a break and get some inspiration! Whether that means watching movies, talking with friends, revisiting old diary entries, etc. It can be hard to feel inspired when you’re trying to force it too much. It always helps me to take a step back, get some sleep, and just let the inspiration come.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

My debut EP, Side Effects, is out on April 16th!

Keep up with Ci Majr here:
