Beneath The Surface: Annabel Allum

Hello and welcome to yet another Beneath The Surface session. (Two, in one day? Gosh I am good to you!) For this instalment I am joined by the truly wonderful and exceptionally talented Annabel Allum. We uncover all the juicy details in this little sneaky snack of an interview, so sit back, relax & sink your teeth into this one!

What would you say first sparked your interest in music/who inspired you to make music?

I spent a lot of time in the car as a kid. Music was always playing and it allowed me to get lost in a different place and disassociate with what was going on around me. I think I never really lost that desire to get lost. As I grew older music remained my coping mechanism but also became my therapy. I started channelling my feelings into songs and here we are!

How would you describe the music you are currently creating?

Guitar driven, more defined, more texture, better than ever.

What does your creative process look like?

It depends. I journal a lot, lyrics come very easily. I try not to push songs. If it’s not working I leave it and come back to it. Sometimes it starts with a melodical idea which I’ll find chords to sit beneath. Usually then I document those ideas on logic and build the sound from there adding drums, layers, structure.

Who would you most like to collaborate with? (let’s send it out to the universe and make it happen!)

Sam Fender, I reckon we could make magic together.

What is the one message you would like to send out to your fans?

Hang on in there. It gets better. You can do anything you put your mind to. Feel the fear and do it anyway.

What’s your top tip to rejuvenate your creativity/get over a writer’s block?

I think it’s really important to never stop learning. Also, celebrate the little wins. Sometimes just learning a new chord can be enough for one day. But celebrate that! It’s about doing little and often sometimes.

What’s next for you, what do we have to look forward to/ what are you currently working on?

More music. Still waiting to finish my debut album! It’s been non stop demoing this past year. Probably will have finished album 2 by the time this thing ends.
