Ancelotti urges Everton to ‘wake up’ and hints transfer plans could change

Carlo Ancelotti admitted that Everton need to “wake up” after another home defeat and said their transfer plans will be affected by whether or not they can qualify for Europe.

Everton lost at home for the ninth time in the league this season, on this occasion to Sheffield United. Their opponents may already have been relegated but looked sharper than Ancelotti’s side. The result makes it an uphill climb for the Toffees to reach the European places.

Ancelotti has struggled to explain the differences between how they play at home and away. Once again, he said their loss on their own turf was the right result and wants the whole squad – including himself – to take responsibility.

He told BBC Sport: “We played so bad. The only result that could be possible is a defeat. As we usually did at home most of the time, we lost.

“I have to take responsibility for this but I hope the players do too.

“We have two games to the end. We lost a great opportunity to have the chance to fight for Europe. We have to do our best to the end.

“The next one we will have fans and maybe they can help us wake up.”

Trying to pinpoint why they are better away, Ancelotti added: “It’s difficult to say.

“When we tried to put quality and build from the back we have more difficulties. We are more comfortable when we play direct but that is not the best style of play.

“For next season we are going to change. We have to analyse the season. Certain aspects are really good – away we did fantastic results, at home really bad. Double face.”

Ancelotti admits plans could change

Everton have, for the most part, enjoyed a better season compared to the last one. However, their inconsistencies could prove costly.

They are now three points behind West Ham, who currently occupy the Europa Conference League place. With two games left, time is running out for them to break into Europe.

Ancelotti confirmed that where they finish will have an impact on the kind of players they target.

He said: “To be ready for Europe you have to be in Europe. We have to try to win the two games and see if we are in Europe or not.

“If we are we will build a squad to be in Europe. If we’re not we’ll build a squad to be better in the Premier League.”
