The act of linking fingers in celebration has become inseparable from Owen Farrell, the captain of the England rugby team.
This distinctive gesture, where he curves his two index fingers and interlocks them, forms the symbol ‘JJ’—a representation of Joining Jack. Joining Jack is a charitable organization dedicated to raising funds and awareness for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, an incurable muscle-wasting disorder.
The charity derives its name from Jack Johnson, the son of Andy Johnson, a former professional rugby league player who played alongside Owen’s father at Wigan Warriors from 1994 to 1999.
In an Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on England Rugby’s Reddit channel, Farrell revealed that Johnson was one of his childhood idols.
Discussing the significance of the gesture in a 2017 interview with the Daily Express, Farrell explained, “It’s called the Joining Jack salute.
“Many rugby league players have embraced it. Andy Johnson has played for several rugby league clubs and has a strong bond with the league community. The symbol has gained tremendous popularity.”
Andy’s son, Jack, was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy in 2011, just a few months before his fourth birthday.
In response to this devastating news, the Joining Jack charity was established in 2012 to support Jack and others affected by the condition.
