Werder Bremen chief Frank Baumann has admitted his anxiousness that the club’s pursuit of Manchester United starlet Tahith Chong could fall flat.
The Bundesliga club have been very public about their interest in Chong. The 20-year-old signed a new contract at Old Trafford in March, but could continue his development elsewhere on loan.
That has given Werder Bremen an opportunity to sign the winger. The German side want to take Chong on a two-year loan, without an option to buy.
However, United are refusing to do business until their Europa League campaign is over. Werder, on the other hand, are ready to resume pre-season training and want Chong as soon as possible. That could cause a conflict of interests between their timelines.
Therefore, Bild claim that Werder now have the “jitters” over the deal. That’s because they feel the transfer saga is starting to take longer than it needs to.
Amid that uncertainty, the Bundesliga outfit are concerned that other clubs may swoop in, causing them to miss their opportunity.
Sporting director Frank Baumann has added to the confusion by admitting they have not yet reached a total agreement for Chong.
“There is still a lot to be clarified,” said Baumann. “I’ve been in business long enough to know that a transfer like this can fail because of many things.
“It has not yet been decided and there is still no final agreement between the various parties. But we’re working on winning Tahith over so that he can play in the Werder jersey this season.”
WERDER ANGRY AT AGGRESSIVE AGENT
Baumann made Werder’s interest in Chong known when admitting that the player’s agent had been too “aggressive” in revealing the news.
“[Chong] is a player who is interesting for us, no question about it,” Baumann said last week.
“We need a player like him in the position he plays. We are in good talks with Manchester United, but there are several details to be agreed on.
“I like to keep a low profile when it comes to something like this, but when the player’s advisor communicates so aggressively, there is no point in denying our interest.”
