available worldwide online (https://www.myfavouritemagazines.co.uk/Prog-Print-Back-Issues/prog-issue-105/?listtype=list searchparam=prog) is the new issue (issue 105, January 2020) of the UK’s Prog Magazine. Always a decent read, this month’s issue has three features in particular of interest to Pink Floyd fans. First, there’s a two-page look at Nick Mason’s Saucerful of Secrets, and in particular, the band’s UK and Ireland tour this year. With comments from Nick and guitarist Lee Harris, it finds the band missing the stage, and looking forward to being back on it in the spring when the dates resume. The main feature is a celebration of the 40th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s epic double album The Wall in a ten-page feature. They talked to Nick Mason, Bob Ezrin, Gerald Scarfe, and Bob Geldof about how the album evolved into a live extravaganza, a movie and how it pretty much broke the band. It’s a lively, and fascinating, look at this wide-ranging project. The Wall feature is followed by a two-page interview with the Floyd’s Creative Director Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell, and Andy Jackson, long-time collaborator with the band who mixed and produced much of the music on The Later Years. There’s also brand new and exclusive interviews with Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant, Marillion, Sons Of Apollo, The Flower Kings, Edison’s Children, Kaprekar’s Constant, Nightmare Scenario, The Blackheart Orchestra, American Tears, Field Music, Lee Abraham Music and more… Plus there’s the results of the 2019 Readers’ Poll (with Nick Mason in the top ten drummers, and the Saucers in the top ten event category), and a look at 50 years of the legendary Friars Aylesbury venue. And music from Oak, The Dave Foster Band, Stuckfish, Moonshot Band and more on the CD. Rare Syd Barrett painting sells at auction
A couple of weeks ago, we told you about a very rare Syd Barrett painting that was coming up for auction (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/very-rare-syd-barrett-painting-up-for-auction.html). The painting, titled Orange Dahlias In A Vase, 1961 and signed R. Barrett (Roger being Syd’s real first name), which was in the possession of childhood friend Phil Harden, had no problems finding a buyer on May 27th. The Cambridge based Cheffins auction house (https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art/lot-view,-roger-syd-barrett-british-19462006_71901.htm), who sold the contents of Syd Barrett’s home in St Margaret’s Square, Cambridge, where he had lived since 1981, after his death in 2006, were running the auction for this incredible piece. The artwork was created by Barrett when he was just 15 years of age, and was a mix of watercolours and pastels. The auction house explained the provenance: “In 1957, Barrett began his secondary education at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys, which aimed to emulate the public-school model. As a student, Barrett was emphatically average and, to most of his teachers, remarkable only in his inability to follow the rules. To Gerald Arthur Clement Harden, the school’s art teacher between 1938 and 1971, however, Barrett was a conspicuous and prodigious talent and one of the very few pupils permitted to use Harden’s oil paints. “Painted when Barrett was just 15 years old, the present lot was gifted to Harden by the artist shortly before he left the school and began studying art at Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology. Although generally perceived as an unmotivated student by most of his tutors, Hardenâs support encouraged Barrett to pursue further study in painting and ignited in him a passion for art that would continue to burn until his death in 2006.” There were nine later Barrett artworks sold in the previous Cheffins auction, raising £121,000 to fund local art training. The estimated selling price for this newly revealed artwork was between £3,000 – £5,000 plus buyer’s fees. As we suspected this was a VERY conservative figure. The final hammer price was a lot higher: £22,000, plus a “buyers premium” payable to the auction house of 29.4%, giving a total paid by (we understand) an Italian of what we work out to be around £28,468, plus the cost of getting it back to Italy.

David Gilmour – a very happy birthday to you!
Our very best wishes, and many happy returns, to David Gilmour who is celebrating his birthday today (March 6th)! Born and raised in Cambridge, David became involved with various bands in the area, principally Jokers Wild who were a popular draw when they played, before joining Pink Floyd in 1968. More recent years have seen David concentrating on his solo career, and helping out chums on their musical projects on an ad hoc basis. In 2019, some 120+ of David’s guitars were auctioned, raising $21.5 million (including some record-breaking amounts for individual instruments) which went to the environmental charity ClientEarth (https://clientearth.org). He also appeared as a guest performer at the Richard Thompson 70th Birthday Concert (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-guest-appearance-at-richard-thompson-70th-birthday-co.html), playing Dimming Of The Day and Fat Old Sun, and joining the encore. In 2020, on February 25th, shortly before all activity stopped around the world due to Coronavirus, David joined the stellar bill for the Mick Fleetwood Friends Celebrate The Music of Peter Green and The Early Years of Fleetwood Mac (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html) concert at London’s Palladium, which has been released as a 4LP, 2CD, Blu-ray and book box set (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html). The concert was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity (https://teenagecancertrust.org). More recently, of course, there have been numerous pictures of David posted by his wife, Polly, showing him being rather active in recording studios – one reason is the upcoming Mark Knopfler charity single bringing over 60 musicians – particularly guitarists – together for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mark-knopfler-gathers-60-guitar-legends-including-david-gilmour-for-charity-s.html). However, there looks to have been plenty of activity unrelated to this project, giving indications that new music from David may be on the cards… It just remains for us to wish David a very happy day! Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets: UK tour, with extra dates, moves to April/May 2021
Today we bring you the news that we're pretty sure 99% of you have been expecting. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the UK dates lined up for October 2020 for Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets have been postponed until April/May next year when things will hopefully be a little more settled and a sense of some normality will have returned. At the moment, we'd be amazed if any indoor concerts happen this year. The press release for the move rightly notes the uncertainty surrounding us all due to the pandemic, and makes it clear that it is important to the band that those who are planning to attend the shows are able to do so safely and without concern for their health and wellbeing. To achieve this, and to allow people the opportunity to plan their travel to and from the concerts, postponing until April 2021 was the best option. With the move of the shows, they've managed to add three new dates to the schedule, and have had to cancel two of the existing shows as they were unable to reschedule them. So, the shows in Gateshead and Southampton have now gone, but have been replaced with shows in Newcastle and Portsmouth, which were as close as they could manage to the original locations. Holders of tickets for the cancelled shows can receive a refund from their ticket provider. Tickets for the five additional shows have just gone on sale (at midday, today, UK time) from SeeTickets (https://www.seetickets.com/tour/nick-mason-s-saucerful-of-secrets), Ticketmaster (https://www.ticketmaster.co.uk/) and other normal agents including the venues, so if you are intending to go to one of these additional shows, we suggest you buy now to get the best choice of seats. All the other shows remain on sale, but for the revised dates.
