MOJO magazine’s two-part Pink Floyd special collectors’ edition (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-specials/emojespc/collectors-series-pink-floyd-bundle) is on sale now in UK stores. Housed in a gatefold card sleeve, with a mirrored prism on the front, and Atom Heart Mother’s Lulubelle III pictured on the inside when opened up, the magazine covers the early period in the band’s history: 1965-1973. The editor, Mark Blake (he of the excellent Pigs Might Fly biography of the band) has put together the pair of 132 page magazines in part to tie in with the upcoming tour of Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets that begins on March 12th in Vancouver. The publications pull together interviews and articles printed over the many years of MOJO magazine, and accompany them with many rare and previously unseen images of the band, to help trace the journey from the band’s first steps, through to The Dark Side Of The Moon. There were certainly a healthy number of pictures which I’d not seen before, and refreshingly for a special publication such as this, there is no advertising within its pages to artificially inflate the page count. Both parts should be worthwhile purchases for Floyd fans, providing plenty to read, and lots of visual entertainment too. The second part, also known as Edition 2, will be available in UK stores from April 4th, and covers the period of 1974 to the present day. As you’ll see from the image here, the cover of the second part has the band lurking behind a hole in the Wall… PLEASE NOTE that Edition 1 (part one) is selling incredibly well, and copies are becoming very hard to find. Secure your copy now by purchasing online (it’s available worldwide) through these links at the publishers: Specially priced bundle to buy Edition 1 (1965-73), and pre-order Edition 2 (1974-2019) (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-specials/emojespc/collectors-series-pink-floyd-bundle) or The link to buy Edition 1 (1965-73) only (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-specials/emojespc/collectors-series-pink-floyd-edition-1)

Pink Floyd At War feature in new issue of Mojo Magazine
new issue of the UK’s Mojo Magazine (cover date February 2021, issue number 327) (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-327-february-2021) includes a major feature on Pink Floyd, within its pages which also include a major retrospective on John Lennon, marking 40 years since he was senselessly shot dead in New York. The Floyd feature – headlined Burning Bridges: Floyd Wars! and written by Pigs Might Fly author Mark Blake – is a detailed, eight-page look at the conflict between Roger Waters and David Gilmour, and looks at its origins. It is clear that from very early days, there were differences in the pair’s behaviours and ethos which even saw David walk out of one of the very first rehearsals he had with the others on joining Pink Floyd in January 1968. As one has come to expect from Blake, it’s an entertaining and detailed guide to the fraught working relationship of Roger and David, pre- and post- split. Elsewhere in the magazine, amongst a wide range of other things, and subject of the cover photo, there’s the piece on John Lennon which is an absorbing look at the impact and aftershock of the shooting, coupled with a range of artists, musicians and others talking about how Lennon changed their lives. Always a great read, the magazine has arrived in UK stores today (Tuesday, December 15th), and will be available in selected locations worldwide as an import, in due course. Alternatively, you can order (worldwide) online through the GreatMagazines website (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-327-february-2021) which is owned and run by the publishers of Mojo.

Very rare Syd Barrett gig poster in upcoming auction
Warren Dosanjh, a school friend of Syd Barrett, and the manager of the early Barrett band Those Without, is selling some of his framed and glazed posters and other ephemera through the Cambridge based auction house Cheffins. Cheffins Auctions were the people who sold Barrett’s possessions after his death, on behalf of his family, so it is no real surprise they are being used again. The auction is being held this Thursday, October 26th, under the sale title Art and Design October 2023. You can view the details of each of the lots, on page 50-51 of Cheffins catalogue for this auction, which can be viewed through this link (https://edition.pagesuite.com/html5/reader/production/default.aspx?pubname=&edid=0c6fef7f-3de9-410d-be7e-077c9c75883b) or by clicking the thumbnail of the auction pages below: Most of the items are from exhibitions to do with Syd, held after his death. The first is a City Wakes poster (from the Syd celebration in Cambridge) signed by Storm Thorgerson and Rosemary Breen (Syd’s sister), together with assorted ephemera relating to the exhibition, a facsimile poster of the BBC Cambridgeshire and Anglia Ruskin University invitation to the unveiling of a Blue Plaque in memory of Syd; a Royal Mail Syd Barrett first day cover, numbered 658 of 3000; a copy of Melody Maker from August 1967 featuring Syd on the cover and other Syd related ephemera. There’s a VIP invitation poster for ‘Syd Barrett: A Celebration’ at the Cambridge Corn Exchange from October 2016 , featuring an unveiling of public commemorative art followed by a celebratory concert and music from Men on the Border together with the Sandviken Symphony Orchestra and lights by Peter Wynne-Willson, interpreting the music of Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd, at the venue where Barrett performed his last ever concert in 1972. There’s a Royal Mail limited edition, numbered giclée print of the Wish You Were Here stamp, and a poster from the Their Mortal Remains exhibition in Rome, Italy. The most unusual lot though is from a gig at the Cambridge Corn Exchange that Syd played in with a support band, The Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band. This comes with a live recording CD of the band which had Syd on guitar, and a CD of Hawkwind on the same evening. Potentially this is the only remaining example of this poster in existence. We suspect the estimate of £500-1000 will be shown to be very pessimistic…
