Atletico Madrid winger Yannick Carrasco has admitted ‘a few clubs knocked on my door’ during the January transfer window, amid links with Tottenham and Newcastle.
Carrasco changed his agent in the winter, leading to rumours of a deadline day switch to the Premier League. The Independent, citing reports in France, revealed Tottenham as a potential destination for the Belgium international.
The Transfer Tavern added to the uncertainty by revealing Spurs had ‘taken steps’ to engineer a deal with Atletico.
They also put Newcastle in the mix for Carrasco’s services due to Eddie Howe’s search for top-quality reinforcements.
Despite a late push from Spurs, the 28-year-old did not leave the Wanda Metropolitano. He remained part of Diego Simeone’s squad and even went on to score in Atleti’s first La Liga match after the transfer window.
The wide man has now spoken about his transfer links, confirming that several clubs held an interest – with Spurs and Newcastle likely to be a part of that.
‘I’m at home’, says Yannick Carrasco
“These days, I feel very, very good. I’m at home,” Carrasco told RTBF (via Sport Witness). “I’m well integrated [and] I’m an important player, whether it be on the pitch or in the dressing room.
“[I’m] already at a certain age too. But [in] football, as they say, you never know how to plan or predict the future. A few clubs knocked on my door this winter. But I’m good at Atletico, so I wanted to continue my adventure here.”
Carrasco is in his second spell with the Spanish giants, having left for Chinese side Dalian Professional in February 2018. Following an initial loan, he went back to Spain permanently in September 2020 as Atleti paid £24.3million for his signature.
The star made 35 appearances last season as Simone’s men won the La Liga title ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Tottenham a ‘possibility’ for Juve man
Meanwhile, Tottenham are one of the “possibilities” for Paulo Dybala this summer, with Juventus officials and the player’s agent set to meet for contract renewal talks this week.
That is the latest news coming from Turin, via Calciomercato. The Italian outlet say that Juve are preparing another renewal offer. But with the proposed offer said to be less than the last deal Dybala rejected, the Argentina international looks set to move on.
Dybala’s current deal expires in June 2022 and he has held talks over an extension. In fact in October, Fabrizio Romano claimed a renewal until 2025 was close.
However, as yet no agreement has been reached regarding the 28-year-old attacker.
As per Calciomercato, via Sport Witness, the Bianconeri will propose a “lower offer” compared to the previous one.
That previous offer was reported to be €8m net, plus bonuses. But with the relationship between player and club “freezing” over the winter it looks likely that a lower offer will be doomed to failure.
