Gerald Scarfe – a very happy birthday to you!

Our very best wishes go to Gerald Scarfe (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/gerald-scarfe-interviews/november-2005-with-brain-damage.html) today as he celebrates his 86th birthday. Gerald, of course, is a graphic artist with a long history with the Floyd, from the 1974 tour programme caricature, through to his most famous work on The Wall, and beyond that, working with Roger Waters on his Pros and Cons project. Many happy returns to Gerald on this very special day from all of us here at Brain Damage. For those who haven’t seen it, Gerald’s superb The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/gerald-scarfe-the-art-of-pink-floyd-the-wall-hardback-book.html) is REALLY worth checking out if you are interested in his work on the project, which spanned the album, concerts and film. It is a beautiful, 288-page hardback book, in landscape format housed within a cardboard sleeve that reveals a huge amount of rare and previously unseen sketches, paintings and more, created by Gerald Scarfe principally for The Wall project, but also includes earlier materials, for Wish You Were Here and Animals, for example. It is an expensive book, but the work involved bringing together the breadth of material within, and the quality of its presentation, help to justify the price tag – and it is completely different to any previous books on Scarfe’s artwork for the Floyd. However much you think you know The Wall, and Scarfe’s artwork for it (and earlier Pink Floyd projects), this book will reveal far more than you could imagine. One wonders if there was anything left in his archive that wasn’t included? That’s not a criticism, but a note of thanks for bringing in so many early sketches and ideas to sit alongside finished designs and images. This is a truly incredible book that will appeal equally to Pink Floyd fans, to Scarfe enthusiasts, and to those interested in production design for film and concert stage. Pink Floyd featuring Andriy Khlyvnyuk releasing new music

Just announced: Pink Floyd are releasing new music in support of the people of Ukraine entitled ‘Hey, Hey, Rise Up’, which will be available digitally from midnight tonight, with all proceeds going to Ukrainian Humanitarian Relief. The track (recorded last Wednesday, March 30th) sees David Gilmour and Nick Mason joined by long time Pink Floyd bassist Guy Pratt and Nitin Sawhney on keyboards, and features an extraordinary vocal performance by Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Ukrainian band Boombox. Andriy’s vocals are taken from his Instagram post of him singing in Kyiv’s Sofiyskaya Square. The song itself, ‘Oh, The Red Viburnum In The Meadow’ is a rousing Ukrainian folk protest song written during the first world war which has been taken up across the world over the past month in protest of the invasion of Ukraine. The title of the Pink Floyd track is taken from the last line of the song which translates as ‘Hey, hey, rise up and rejoice’. In the press release, Gilmour, who has a Ukrainian daughter-in-law and grandchildren said: “We, like so many, have been feeling the fury and the frustration of this vile act of an independent, peaceful democratic country being invaded and having its people murdered by one of the world’s major powers”. Gilmour explained how he came to know Andriy and his band Boombox. “In 2015, I played a show at Koko in London in support of the Belarus Free Theatre, whose members have been imprisoned. Pussy Riot and the Ukrainian band, Boombox, were also on the bill. They were supposed to do their own set, but their singer Andriy had visa problems, so the rest of the band backed me for my set – we played Wish You Were Here for Andriy that night. Recently I read that Andriy had left his American tour with Boombox, had gone back to Ukraine, and joined up with the Territorial Defence. Then I saw this incredible video on Instagram, where he stands in a square in Kyiv with this beautiful gold-domed church and sings in the silence of a city with no traffic or background noise because of the war. It was a powerful moment that made me want to put it to music.” While writing the music for the track, David managed to speak with Andriy from his hospital bed in Kyiv where he was recovering from a mortar shrapnel injury. “I played him a little bit of the song down the phone line and he gave me his blessing. I hope that we do something together in person at some point in the future.” Gilmour wanted “to show our support for Ukraine and in that way, show that most of the world thinks that it is totally wrong for a superpower to invade the independent democratic country that Ukraine has become.” The video for ‘Hey Hey Rise Up’ was filmed by acclaimed director Mat Whitecross and shot on the same day as the track was recorded. Gilmour: “We recorded the track and video in our barn where we did all our Von Trapped Family live streams during the lockdown. It’s the same room that we did the ‘Barn Jams’ with Rick Wright back in 2007. Janina Pedan made the set in a day and we had Andriy singing on the screen while we played, so the four of us had a vocalist, albeit not one who was physically present with us.” The artwork for the track features a painting of the national flower of Ukraine, the sunflower, by the Cuban artist, Yosan Leon. The cover of the single is a direct reference to the woman who was seen around the world giving sunflower seeds to Russian soldiers and telling them to carry them in their pockets so that when they die, sunflowers will grow. David Gilmour performing at the 2012 Douglas Adams 60th Birthday Party

11 March 2012 would have been the author Douglas Adams’ 60th Birthday. To celebrate this event, Douglas’s family and friends decided to hold a “virtual birthday party” in London, at the Hammersmith Apollo (formerly Odeon) which turned out to be a stunning, star-studded event with chat, comedy and music filling the evening. The event was staged in aid of Save The Rhino International. For the musical part of the evening, there was quite the house band. Robbie McIntosh on guitar and vocals, Gary Brooker on keyboards and vocals, Jodi Linscott on percussion, Wix Wickens on keyboards, Margo Buchanan on vocals and guitar, backed by Dave Bronze on bass, and Paul Beavis on drums. Joining them later in the set was David Gilmour, who sang Wish You Were Here, which he played an acoustic guitar on, followed by Chuck Berry’s Too Much Monkey Business with the Black Strat fired up, which he also used on the finale of A Whiter Shade Of Pale. The show was filmed, but never released. However, one decade on, and to coincide with what would have been Douglas’s 70th birthday, permission has been granted to release that stunning finale, which you can see here:

It is an expensive book, but the work involved bringing together the breadth of material within, and the quality of its presentation, help to justify the price tag – and it is completely different to any previous books on Scarfe’s artwork for the Floyd. From the first ideas for The Wall, through to the finished images that we are all familiar with, there’s such a wealth of material that steadily progresses through the album/film/concert staging, that you can quickly feel quite overwhelmed with the amount that Scarfe clearly created during his time on this project. And, for the first time, an incredible amount of that work has been revealed. Blinking PULSE due for 2 Blu-ray and 2 DVD deluxe box set release

On February 18th, 2022, the Restored and Re-Edited version of Pink Floyd’s P.U.L.S.E. concert film (shot on 20th October 1994 at London’s Earls Court) is set to be released as a 2 Blu-ray or 2 DVD deluxe box set, with the return of the flashing LED on the spine (as seen on the original 1995 CD release) powered by replaceable AA batteries! These deluxe packages include music videos, screen films, documentaries, rehearsal footage and more, along with a 60 page booklet. On Pink Floyd’s social channels, they mention that, in an interview from 1995 with Mojo Magazine, Nick Mason talked about the flashing LED. “Essentially, it’s a device which we thought was entertaining. It’s an idea of Storm Thorgerson’s which related to Dark Side and the pulse, and it’s a live album so the box is “alive”. After that, in terms of seriously deep meanings, one might be struggling a bit.” The original flashing LED package is much loved by the fans, and the initial announcement video leads with the blink of the light. The new box sets will be designed for easy replacement of the 2 AA batteries; the UK release in 1995 was powered by one AA, but the packaging wasn’t designed in such a way that it was easy to change without some damage, albeit internally, to the sleeve. Gerald Scarfe: The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall – hardback book

To be published (with a slight delay to the previous date) on December 2nd, 2021 by Little, Brown, is The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall. This is a beautiful new, 288-page hardback book, in landscape format housed within a cardboard sleeve (shown to the right), that reveals a huge amount of rare and previously unseen sketches, paintings and more, created by Gerald Scarfe principally for The Wall project, but also including earlier materials, for Wish You Were Here and Animals, for example. It is an expensive book, but the work involved bringing together the breadth of material within, and the quality of its presentation, help to justify the price tag. Prefaced with a slightly bizarre foreword by Roger Waters (that is not overly illuminating!), Scarfe’s lengthy and absorbing introduction reveals that his first experience of Pink Floyd at UFO in London, 1967. Fast forward to 1973 and – in Nick Mason’s kitchen – Scarfe was asked to work on stuff for the Floyd’s upcoming Wish You Were Here project, specifically animations for the live shows, and of course, the 1974 Winter Tour programme and poster. Even at this stage, the rare images start to flow, with more traditional and recognisable sketches of the band members during their rehearsals, and a spider becoming a screaming Medusa head for Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Of course, the main body of the book concerns his work with Roger Waters and the rest of the band from 1978 onwards. Waters presented his raw demo tapes and explained the concept to Scarfe, who then set about designing the various characters who would inhabit the story; these would inevitably change as the process went on, and some never went past the initial few months (such as Punch and Judy being the main characters). The introduction continues with thoughts of the live show, including the inflatable slug or worm that would be transported from location to location to play the concerts in a venue that the band had total control over. Scarfe discusses his experience of the actual concerts, then talks about the “final part of Roger’s original ambition” for The Wall – the feature film. Scarfe then touches on the Waters Pros & Cons project, including the origins of the name Reg. He concludes the introduction by setting out his aims for this book, looking at things up to current times, and how going through his archives revealed to him that he could cover the whole story – and also showed him that some of the elements were in retrospect very personal to him and his life. The conclusion of the introduction also sees the end of Scarfe’s narrative in a traditional sense, with the rest of the book taken up with a couple of hundred further pages entirely taken up with pictures, paintings, drawings, and more, all accompanied with Scarfe’s footnotes about each image. This arguably works much better, as he isn’t forced into coming up with a narrative which isn’t really needed. It also allows him the ability to give short, pithy, and sometimes amusing captions which wouldn’t fit in to a more conventional rundown.

Animals Reimagined – A Tribute To Pink Floyd out next month

Following on from the successful June release of Still Wish You Were Here, a project that gathered various classic, prog and art rock musicians together to cover that album, the people behind it have brought together a similar mix of musicians to cover Pink Floyd’s 1977 album, Animals. Animals Reimagined – A Tribute To Pink Floyd is set for release on November 19th, 2021, on both CD and digital with a vinyl version coming in 2022. The previous album, Still Wish You Were Here – whilst dividing the Floyd fanbase – got a number of plaudits for its approach to the music, and with its success it is no surprise that another of the Floyd’s albums would undergo the same treatment. As before, a fairly diverse line-up can be heard on the album, with the likes of jazz-rock guitarist Al Di Meola, psych-rock godfather Arthur Brown, world renowned drummer and percussionist Carmine Appice, UFO’s Vinnie Moore, Bauhaus’s David J, Dream Theater’s James LaBrie, the legend that is Rick Wakeman, and Rainbow vocalist Graham Bonnet all coming together to give their unique flavour to this magnum opus. Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon SACD finally reissued

Back in January 2020, we advised that later that month the long-awaited reissue of the hybrid multichannel SACD (Super Audio CD) of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon, was due. Unfortunately, due to unspecified reasons (which were possibly related to the first appearance and spread
of Covid-19) the reissue was delayed. Great news for all of you who have been patiently waiting on confirmed information of when you could get your hands on this – it is now seemingly starting to ship out to those who have ordered it! Originally released in the SACD format (having a separate stereo layer playable on all normal CD players) in 2003 as part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the album, the SACD proved very popular. However, it has been out of print for some years, so the reissue will be welcomed by many. The release comes on the Pink Floyd Records label (catalogue number PFR24) via Analogue Productions, and they are selling it fairly much exclusively through their US-based AcousticSounds.com store (https://store.acousticsounds.com/d/133317/Pink_Floyd-The_Dark_Side_Of_The_Moon-Hybrid_Multichannel_SACD), although for those in the UK and other places might prefer to use the UK’s Rough Trade (https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/pink-floyd/the-dark-side-of-the-moon-analogue-productions-sacd) as despite the total cost being similar to buying from Acoustic Sounds, it might negate the chance of having to pay customs charges or import duties. The mix on the SACD/CD layer is the same as the 2003 release, but as you’ll see from the unboxing video below, the packaging has been updated with a slipcover, with the disc held in a well-illustrated book housing. For those unfamiliar with the format, SACDs provide high audio quality, and in certain cases (such as this, and the other Floyd SACD, Wish You Were Here) multi-channel, surround mixes too. The TDSOTM and WYWH SACDs both sound superb, and it is worth checking to see if you have suitable equipment to play multichannel SACDs. A number of Sony CD players are compatible with SACDs, and indeed some Playstation consoles play SACDs with no problem. Other makes of CD/DVD/Blu-ray players do support the format, but this varies from model to model. There are a number of “universal” players out there which include SACD in their capabilities. It is worth checking the specifications of players, particularly if you are looking to pick up a cheap, second-hand machine on eBay and suchlike.
