Very rare Syd Barrett painting up for auction

The Cambridge based Cheffins auction house (https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art/lot-view,-roger-syd-barrett-british-19462006_71901.htm), who sold the contents of Syd Barrett’s home in St Margaret’s Square, Cambridge, where he had lived since 1981, after his death in 2006, is auctioning a very rare artwork by him at the end of this month. The painting, titled Orange Dahlias In A Vase, 1961 and signed R.Barrett, is currently in the possession of childhood friend Phil Harden, and will be sold off on May 27th. The artwork was created by Barrett when he was just 15 years of age, and was a mix of watercolours and pastels. There were nine later artworks sold in the previous Cheffins auction, raising £121,000 to fund local art training. The estimated selling price for this newly revealed artwork is between £3,000 – £5,000 plus buyer’s fees. We suspect though that this is a VERY conservative figure and expect the final hammer price to be a lot higher. The auction house explains the provenance: “In 1957, Barrett began his secondary education at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys, which aimed to emulate the public-school model. As a student, Barrett was emphatically average and, to most of his teachers, remarkable only in his inability to follow the rules. To Gerald Arthur Clement Harden, the school’s art teacher between 1938 and 1971, however, Barrett was a conspicuous and prodigious talent and one of the very few pupils permitted to use Harden’s oil paints. “Painted when Barrett was just 15 years old, the present lot was gifted to Harden by the artist shortly before he left the school and began studying art at Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology. Although generally perceived as an unmotivated student by most of his tutors, Harden’s support encouraged Barrett to pursue further study in painting and ignited in him a passion for art that would continue to burn until his death in 2006.” To see the painting in more detail, and for more details of the auction, including how to bid, visit Cheffins.co.uk (https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art/lot-view,-roger-syd-barrett-british-19462006_71901.htm).

Mick Fleetwood & Friends concert on Blu-ray/CD/LP – unboxing

Around fourteen months ago, legendary drummer Mick Fleetwood enlisted an all-star cast for a spectacular, one-of-a-kind concert, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust (https://teenagecancertrust.org), which was held on Tuesday, February 25th at London’s legendary venue, The Palladium – shortly before Covid-19 affected life everywhere, and resulted in lockdowns in many countries. The bill for Mick Fleetwood Friends Celebrate The Music Of Peter Green And The Early Years Of Fleetwood Mac, included Billy Gibbons, David Gilmour, Jonny Lang, Andy Fairweather Low, John Mayall, Christine McVie, Zak Starkey, Steven Tyler, Bill Wyman, Noel Gallagher, Pete Townshend, Neil Finn, Kirk Hammett and many more. Legendary producer Glyn Johns joined as the executive sound producer and the house band featured Fleetwood himself along with Andy Fairweather Low, Dave Bronze and Ricky Peterson. Very sadly, five months after the concert, Peter passed away. For those who weren’t able to attend the concert, three different editions were announced for release – a Super Deluxe Edition Box Set, with the entire show on 4LP, 2CD and a Blu-ray in a book (and copies ordered early included your choice of name in the concert documentary credits, a reproduction signed concert poster, and reproduction signed set list); a Blu-ray and 2CD set; and a 4LP set. These were originally slated for release on October 16th, 2020, but with Covid-19 affecting the production of the release, these releases were postponed to April 30th, 2021 – the end of this month. Just unveiled is this “unboxing” video of the Super Deluxe Edition, which may whet your appetite for this release: To order the various editions, you can do so from the following Amazon stores (thus helping Brain Damage with a much needed contribution towards site running costs, at no extra cost to you!): MICK FLEETWOOD FRIENDS – 4LP, Blu-ray & 2CD box set: Amazon UK (https://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B08NVDLM6B/braindamage-21)
