Today would have been the much-missed, and much-loved, Richard Wright’s 80th birthday. Today sees new mixes by Steven Wilson of Richard’s debut solo album, Wet Dream, available on CD and all streaming platforms, with a deep blue transparent marbled vinyl and blu-ray edition of the album being released on September 29th. The vinyl reissue sees it on the format for the first time since its original release in 1978. It is on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, and the Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal images and videos from around this period of his life. It’s housed in a book format with four collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Since the initial announcement, the Blu-ray has been expanded to also include a flat transfer of the original pre-master of the 1978 stereo mix, taken from the analogue reels, as well as Steven Wilson’s 2023 instrumental stereo mixes of the four vocal tracks on the album being added. This reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. As per the original release, the bi-fold sleeve folds out to extend the image and features the same vibrant colour palette. This time, the unidentified person in bright red shorts is swimming within deep blue waters of the sea rather than a pool and the image expands out to reveal a boat slightly out of their reach, referencing the nautical theme of the record. The image was taken by Costas Spathis, a photographer living and working in Greece, which is where the album was written and the graphic design is by Carl Glover. The original artwork was designed by Storm Thorgerson and photographed by Audrey Powell for Hipgnosis and features in the vinyl booklet. Upon rediscovering this record (broadly speaking, quite overlooked or unknown by some Pink Floyd fans), it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. Yesterday evening, at the Dolby Listening Room in Soho, London, family (most of Richard’s were there), friends, and selected media were treated to a pair of playback sessions – in the pitch black – which straddled a Q&A session with Steven Wilson, hosted by Guy Pratt. First, the playback: this was the Atmos mix which is coming in September on the Blu-ray of the album, and simply put, it sounded absolutely superb. The clarity, power, and sheer musical and emotional impact made for a truly memorable night. The Q&A with Steven led to some fascinating insights into the process of finding the original master tapes (which were held at Universal in London), then getting them “baked” by Damon Iddins at Astoria (David Gilmour’s houseboat studio), before Steven could take the separate 24-track recordings and create the remix, which gives us an album which has never sounded as good as this! Here’s a glimpse at the Q&A, and the message to the attendees on a screen in the Ray Dolby Lounge (a separate screen was showing home video footage of Richard, which should be on the Blu-ray when that is released). Finally, if you’ve yet to hear it, here’s a taster of the album: ORDERING INFORMATION:

New Syd Barrett limited heavyweight vinyl LP collection available to order
Some very interesting news today from Third Man Records, who have quite a reputation for quality, limited pressing. They’ve teamed up with Sony Music Entertainment for a very special, limited edition box set that many of you will undoubtably be interested in! Individually out of print on LP for almost ten years (the last issue of these was in 2014) and never previously available together on vinyl, Third Man are releasing Syd Barrettâs solo albums – The Madcap Laughs, Barrett, and Opel – as the 57th installment of their Vault subscription series. This reissue sees January 1970’s The Madcap Laughs pressed on ‘Golden Hair’ coloured vinyl, November 1970’s Barrett on ‘Baby Lemonade’ coloured vinyl, and 1988’s Opel on ‘Milky Way Opal’ coloured vinyl. All three LPs are pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Third Man Pressing in Detroit and will come housed in a newly-designed slipcase featuring a recursive portrait of Syd by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Greg Ruth, executed in one continuous line without lifting the pen. An added bonus to this collection is a 7-inch single by David Gilmour covering two Barrett compositions. Dominoes was recorded live at London’s Royal Festival Hall in January 2002, and Dark Globe was recorded live in Clam, Austria, as a tribute, shortly after Syd’s death in July 2006. Order by midnight local time July 31st to guarantee yourself a copy of this essential collection, only at ThirdManStore.co.uk (https://thirdmanstore.co.uk/blogs/vault-news/introducing-vault-package-57-the-solo-works-of-syd-barrett). You will need to take out at least a quarterly subscription, which will INCLUDE the Barrett boxset, but once received you should be able to cancel this subscription – unless you fancy future releases and the other benefits that Third Man Records offer to their subscribers.
Richard Wright ‘Wet Dream’ reissue with Steven Wilson remix release details
Some great news has been announced this afternoon, following some online rumours and speculation – Richard Wrightâs debut solo album, Wet Dream, is to be reissued on vinyl for the first time since its original release in 1978 – this time in deep blue transparent marbled vinyl. It will also be available on streaming platforms for the first time ever including a new Dolby Atmos mix, on CD and on blu-ray which includes a 5.1 mix and never before released personal images and videos from around this period of his life. To be released on July 28th – the date that would have been his 80th birthday – it will initially be made available on CD and all streaming platforms, with the vinyl and blu-ray editions of the record being released on September 29th. Remixed by Steven Wilson, this reissue comes with brand new artwork that was commissioned and art-directed by Gala and Jamie Wright, Richard’s children and managers of his estate. Upon rediscovering this record, it becomes hugely apparent how much of Richard’s DNA runs through Pink Floyd. His distinct rhythm patterns, song structure and style of play exudes throughout, shining a light on his unique talent and influence on modern music. When originally released, post Pink Floyd’s Animals (1977) and shortly before 1979’s The Wall, Wet Dream was largely under-appreciated. Steven Wilson’s mix is designed to give new life to the record demonstrating Wright’s brilliance. Richard wrote and produced the whole album himself and it was one of only three albums he released outside of Pink Floyd, the others being Broken China, from 1996, and Identity, released in 1983 under the guise of Zee, a duet with Dave Harris from Fashion. The Blu-ray edition of Wet Dream includes the Dolby Atmos mIx, a 5.1 surround mix (DTS-HD Master Audio 96/24), the new stereo mix in Hi-Res Audio (96/24), and exclusive personal videos along with a photo gallery. It’s housed in a book format with collectable postcards and an 8-page booklet. Here’s a first taste of the album: ORDERING INFORMATION:

An Introduction To Syd Barrett – 2LP and CD reissue coming
Originally released in 2011, and now hard to find (particularly on vinyl), the compilation An Introduction To Syd Barrett is getting a deserved reissue on 2nd December 2022 on 2LP – on heavyweight 180g vinyl – and on CD. The album is designed to provide a handy overview of this visionary talent, with an eighteen track collection taking in six early Pink Floyd songs, alongside twelve of Syd’s solo recordings. David Gilmour, who originally worked on Syd’s two solo albums, as co-producer of The Madcap Laughs and as producer of Barrett, was the executive producer for the album. Damon Iddins and Andy Jackson at Astoria Studios remixed five tracks including Octopus, She Took A Long Cool Look, Dominoes and Here I Go, with Gilmour adding bass guitar to the last track. Pink Floyd’s Matilda Mother also received a fresh 2010 mix. Both versions of the album feature the original 24-page booklet and graphics plus all lyrics, and was designed including the cover art by long time Pink Floyd associate the late Storm Thorgerson and his estimable studio. Here’s the track listing, with the side splits for the vinyl edition (the CD just has all eighteen tracks on one side):
SIDE ONE: Arnold Layne / See Emily Play / Apples And Oranges (Stereo Version) / Matilda Mother (2010 Mix)
SIDE TWO: Chapter 24 / Bike / Terrapin / Love You / Dark Globe
SIDE THREE: Here I Go (2010 Remix) / Octopus (2010 Mix) / She Took A Long Cool Look (2010 Mix) / If It’s In You / Baby Lemonade
SIDE FOUR: Dominoes (2010 Mix) / Gigolo Aunt / Effervescing Elephant / Bob Dylan Blues The album is reissued in the UK and Europe on 2nd December 2022, with North America/elsewhere following in due course. Nick Mason talks about the 2018 Remix of Pink Floyd’s Animals – out Friday
In a new interview with Consequence Of Sound (https://consequence.net/2022/09/nick-mason-interview-pink-floyd-animals-2018-remix/), Nick Mason revealed he kept out of the arguments over the sleeve notes for the upcoming release of the incredible 2018 remix of Pink Floyd’s Animals. The remix (including surround versions) is out this Friday on LP, CD, Blu-ray and Super Audio CD (SACD), with a deluxe edition gathering together the first of those three, with a DVD containing the same material as the Blu-ray, all in a well-designed gatefold cover. Nick said: “David and Roger had a major disagreement about the liner notes, and like all great world wars no one can quite remember what it was about now and what the problem was. But there was a lot of to-ing and fro-ing and eventually some sort of resolution was reached. I managed to stay well out of it.” Adding to the delay in the release was Covid and Brexit. Nick also praised the new cover designs (there’s two different ones, with the main, dusk image joined by a darker, night-time shot for the Blu-ray cover) with the return to Battersea: “I think its terrific, and it’s a continuation of an idea we’ve had before, which is sort of updating something that has existed â including the 1971 Relics compilation and last year’s reissue of 1987’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason”. You can read the full article here (https://consequence.net/2022/09/nick-mason-interview-pink-floyd-animals-2018-remix/). For those yet to order their copy, we really would urge you to consider this release, as it sounds superb – a really great job has been done by James Guthrie! Full format details are here (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/now-announced-pink-floyds-animals-2018-remix-on-multiple-for.html) but we suspect many will go for the deluxe set which has everything other than the SACD. Here are the direct links available to place your orders (which help us with Brain Damage’s ongoing running costs, without costing anything further to you!). Amazon purchases before release will take advantage of their pre-order price guarantee, where you will automatically pay the lowest price offered between when you bought the item, and release. With regard to the SACD, this only seems to be available from a couple of retailers. Dub Side Of The Moon reissue on coloured vinyl
February 2003, by the Easy Star All Stars (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/albums/easy-star-all-stars-dub-side-of-the-moon.html). Using the pick of the reggae and soul community, who spent over three years on the work, Dub Side Of The Moon was one of the more outrageous attempts at reworking Floyd tunes that has come along over the years. And it works really well – so much so that Nick Mason has mentioned it on occasion as a version he enjoys, particularly over renditions by tribute bands and suchlike. The idea came about in 1999 when New York reggae label vice president Lem Oppenheimer convinced his colleagues that this was a viable concept to cover. He imagined it would “echo Dark Side’s album artwork – refracting Pink Floyd’s music vision through a prism of reggaes’s rich rhythmic and instrumental possibilities”. Gathering some of the best musicians of their genre, the producers approached the work seriously – so seriously in fact, that the (alleged) Wizard Of Oz synchronicity apparently works throughout! For those who missed out on it originally, or who fancy it on vinyl, Rough Trade (https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/easy-star-all-stars/dub-side-of-the-moon-a8b64474-be8b-435d-8336-ef0b3d906812) have announced an exclusive, coloured vinyl edition of just 300 copies available to order currently, ahead of the 5th August 2022 release date. As far as we are aware, it is the first time that this has been released on vinyl, previously being released on CD. Our thanks to Brendan Docherty for letting us know about this!
Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon SACD finally reissued
Back in January 2020, we advised that later that month the long-awaited reissue of the hybrid multichannel SACD (Super Audio CD) of Pink Floyd’s iconic 1973 album, The Dark Side Of The Moon, was due. Unfortunately, due to unspecified reasons (which were possibly related to the first appearance and spread
of Covid-19) the reissue was delayed. Great news for all of you who have been patiently waiting on confirmed information of when you could get your hands on this – it is now seemingly starting to ship out to those who have ordered it! Originally released in the SACD format (having a separate stereo layer playable on all normal CD players) in 2003 as part of the commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the album, the SACD proved very popular. However, it has been out of print for some years, so the reissue will be welcomed by many. The release comes on the Pink Floyd Records label (catalogue number PFR24) via Analogue Productions, and they are selling it fairly much exclusively through their US-based AcousticSounds.com store (https://store.acousticsounds.com/d/133317/Pink_Floyd-The_Dark_Side_Of_The_Moon-Hybrid_Multichannel_SACD), although for those in the UK and other places might prefer to use the UK’s Rough Trade (https://www.roughtrade.com/gb/pink-floyd/the-dark-side-of-the-moon-analogue-productions-sacd) as despite the total cost being similar to buying from Acoustic Sounds, it might negate the chance of having to pay customs charges or import duties. The mix on the SACD/CD layer is the same as the 2003 release, but as you’ll see from the unboxing video below, the packaging has been updated with a slipcover, with the disc held in a well-illustrated book housing. For those unfamiliar with the format, SACDs provide high audio quality, and in certain cases (such as this, and the other Floyd SACD, Wish You Were Here) multi-channel, surround mixes too. The TDSOTM and WYWH SACDs both sound superb, and it is worth checking to see if you have suitable equipment to play multichannel SACDs. A number of Sony CD players are compatible with SACDs, and indeed some Playstation consoles play SACDs with no problem. Other makes of CD/DVD/Blu-ray players do support the format, but this varies from model to model. There are a number of “universal” players out there which include SACD in their capabilities. It is worth checking the specifications of players, particularly if you are looking to pick up a cheap, second-hand machine on eBay and suchlike.
The Dark Side Of The Moon – back at number one in UK charts!
However good an album is, one tends to expect a healthy showing in the charts around the time of release, and then, a gradual drop (or in some cases, a sudden plummet!) down the charts and often out, not to bother the chart again. There are, of course, exceptions to this rule… Pink Floyd’s 1973 opus, The Dark Side Of The Moon, is well known for many reasons, not least for the amount of time it has spent on the album charts in regions around the world. This week though, it has proved itself still capable of springing a surprise! In the Official UK Charts, and specifically in the Rock and Metal Album Chart (https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/rock-and-metal-albums-chart/), it has returned to the top spot! More than that, it has been joined by four other Floyd releases in the top spots. Here’s where the five Pink Floyd albums can be found in this week’s Top 30 chart: #1 – The Dark Side Of The Moon#5 – Wish You Were Here#17 – Delicate Sound Of Thunder#23 – The Wall#26 – Animals Quite an impressive showing, especially as four of the five albums in the Top 30 are from the 1970s! We suspect that the success of the Delicate Sound Of Thunder reissue has resulted in fans seeking out older, studio albums to fill essential gaps in their record collections.
