Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – two more shows in Europe, July 2019

Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have added another couple of shows to their 2019 tour (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/index.php) – one indoor, one outdoor. The extra shows sit at the end of the current schedule, and take the band to Poland and the Czech Republic. Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets Tour 2019 (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/index.php), which takes in 45 dates in Canada, the US, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Switzerland, Malta and The Netherlands. The last public performance was in September, in Nottingham, England, and the entire 2018 European tour received huge acclaim from fans and critics alike. Those who have been fortunate enough to have seen the band in action already, will no doubt concur with this. The picture to the left (click the thumbnail) is from the first night of the European tour last year, when the band kicked things off at Cirkus in Stockholm, Sweden. This evening at 8pm local time, the band will take the stage at Vancouver’s Queen Elizabeth Theatre (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2019/march-12th-queen-elizabeth-theatre-vancouver-bc-c.html). We’re hoping that some Brain Damage regulars will be there to experience the thrill of the first night. Anticipation will surely be very high for their first North American appearance. How will the show go? What will the set list be? Will it be the same as heard at last year’s shows – or have they changed things around, or indeed added anything to the set? Two-part Mojo Magazine Pink Floyd special – part one selling fast!

MOJO magazine’s two-part Pink Floyd special collectors’ edition (https://www.greatmagazines.co.uk/mojo-specials/emojespc/collectors-series-pink-floyd-bundle) is on sale now in UK stores. Housed in a gatefold card sleeve, with a mirrored prism on the front, and Atom Heart Mother’s Lulubelle III pictured on the inside when opened up, the magazine covers the early period in the band’s history: 1965-1973. The editor, Mark Blake (he of the excellent Pigs Might Fly biography of the band) has put together the pair of 132 page magazines in part to tie in with the upcoming tour of Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets that begins on March 12th in Vancouver. The publications pull together interviews and articles printed over the many years of MOJO magazine, and accompany them with many rare and previously unseen images of the band, to help trace the journey from the band’s first steps, through to The Dark Side Of The Moon. There were certainly a healthy number of pictures which I’d not seen before, and refreshingly for a special publication such as this, there is no advertising within its pages to artificially inflate the page count. Both parts should be worthwhile purchases for Floyd fans, providing plenty to read, and lots of visual entertainment too. The second part, also known as Edition 2, will be available in UK stores from April 4th, and covers the period of 1974 to the present day. David Gilmour guitars: Christies, London – book viewing slot now

As you know, Christie’s New York is handling the upcoming sale of a significant chunk of the personal guitar collection of David Gilmour. With more than 120 guitars, including his preferred Fender models of Broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters, the auction on 20th June marks a rare opportunity for guitar aficionados, musicians and collectors to explore one of the world’s most comprehensive groupings of guitars that hooked a generation. As we noted, prior to the sale, the entire David Gilmour Collection will be on display at Christie’s London between 27th – 31st March, followed by highlights of the collection on display in Los Angeles from 7th – 11th May, and will conclude with a full preview in New York from 14th – 19th June. For those unable to attend, the auction house had created an incredible virtual tour of the upcoming George Michael collection – hopefully they will create the same for David’s guitars… We have no idea if photography will be permitted at the viewing (a question we’ve had a number of times already) although if you pre-order the catalogue for The David Gilmour Guitar Collection, direct from Christies (https://catalogues.christies.com/christies-shop/Product.aspx?offerId=52694), you should have great pictures of every item on offer. The catalogues are priced at £30/$50/€45 each plus postage, and please note that catalogues will not be despatched until the week commencing 13th May, so it is unlikely to be available to purchase at the London or LA preview events.

Mono 180g vinyl remaster for Record Store Day: Pink Floyd’s A Saucerful Of Secrets

Record Store Day 2019 (http://www.recordstoreday.com) (Saturday 13 April), Pink Floyd are re-releasing their second album, A Saucerful Of Secrets on vinyl. Remastered by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman from the original 1968 analogue mono mix, the release is the latest from Pink Floyd Records, which has supported Record Store Day (RSD) since the label’s launch in June 2016. The limited-edition Record Store Day release is on premium 12 180 gram black vinyl, with a black poly-lined inner sleeve, and a faithful reproduction of the original sleeve, including the Columbia logo, under which imprint (via EMI) the early Pink Floyd released in the UK. The Columbia logo has been used by kind permission of owners Sony Music Entertainment. Originally released in June 1968, A Saucerful Of Secrets represents a change in line-up and direction. Co-founder and original songwriter Syd Barrett contributed only one song to the album and his live appearances became more erratic. So unreliable were Syd’s live appearances that fellow founder members, Roger Waters, Rick Wright and Nick Mason decided to draft in David Gilmour, a friend of Syd’s, also from Cambridge. The album reflects this transition, containing a mixture of material, from the almost music hall Corporal Clegg through Rick’s dreamlike and melodic See Saw and Remember A Day to the title track – an 11-minute, four part instrumental excursion that both harked back to their UFO freakouts and looked forward to the longer, more anthemic instrumental sequences that were to become one of their signature elements. This mono edition of A Saucerful Of Secrets follows the popular RSD release of The Piper At The Gates of Dawn in mono in 2018, and is released via RSD participating stores (http://www.recordstoreday.com) on 13th April 2019. A reminder that it will ONLY be these stores participating; the stores themselves can’t sell it online – the record will become available for customers coming through the door of the store from the morning of the 13th (and not before), in limited quantities – first come, first served, and only one copy per customer. After RSD, if copies remain, they may put them for sale online (and of course, there’ll also be copies on eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk) inevitably…) The full list of RSD releases for 2019 is revealed at 6pm GMT today.
