David Gilmour adds Los Angeles concert

Just announced is a further date on the US leg of David Gilmour’s upcoming tour – David and his band will be performing at the Intuit Dome in Inglewood, Los Angeles, California, on Friday, October 25th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/2024-david-gilmour-tour-zone/october-25th-intuit-dome-inglewood-los-angeles-c.html). This latest addition to David’s 2024 Luck and Strange live shows is this show in a venue that is undergoing the final stages of its construction, and it sounds a most interesting building. The architect, AECOM, notes that the “Intuit Dome will be naturally ventilated, fully electric through batteries and solar power with enough on-site energy storage to power a basketball game or concert, and have no net new greenhouse gas emissions.” To qualify for the pre-sale, which starts on June 12th at 10am local time, you need to sign up at DavidGilmour.com (https://www.davidgilmour.com/uspresale) beforehand to get the pre-sale code. There’s also a venue pre-sale which begins on June 13th at 10am local time. Tickets will then go on general sale at 10am local time on Friday, June 14th, through this link at Ticketmaster (https://www.ticketmaster.com/david-gilmour-tickets/artist/769001).

As the tracks urgent, Liam Gallagher-esque lead vocals enter, shifting the tracks sonic approach to a more brit-pop-com-indie-rock feel. The punching drums keep the track going …

Roger Waters shares Time from Dark Side Redux album

The second track from the upcoming Redux version of The Dark Side Of The Moon, that Roger Waters is releasing on October 6th (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/roger-waters-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-redux-album-annou.html), has been released today to streaming services. Time has now been added to Money as the second full publicly available track from this new version of the Pink Floyd classic. Together they give a decent clue as to how the album should sound – a fairly stripped back, almost introspective and certainly atmospheric take, which is quite different from the original. The album will be available on digital platforms, as well as CD, and as mentioned above, the range of double vinyl editions, which includes standard black (links below), a selected-store-only blue vinyl (please check with your local record store for this, or order below through HMV.com (https://hmv.com/store/music/vinyl/dark-side-of-the-moon)), an Amazon exclusive violet vinyl (links below), a white vinyl which is a German exclusive through jpc.de (https://www.jpc.de/jpcng/poprock/detail/-/art/roger-waters-dark-side-of-the-moon-redux/hnum/11550158), a yellow through FNAC in France (https://www.fnac.com/a18380149/Roger-Waters-The-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon-Redux-Exclusivite-Fnac-Vinyle-Jaune-Vinyle-album), a red (limited to 500 copies) from Newbury Comics in the US (https://www.newburycomics.com/collections/pre-orders/products/roger_waters-the_dark_side_of_the_moon_redux_exclusive_2lp?variant=42326528295092), and Roger’s official store (https://rogerwaters.tmstor.es) has an exclusive transparent orange vinyl edition, bundles with exclusive numbered prints and standard CD and vinyl editions, and even a gold cassette! Interestingly, the fourth side of the vinyl includes “an original composition”, which isn’t on the CD or cassette editions (we don’t yet know about the digital offerings). The Times newspaper noted that “a new 13-minute original ambient bonus track inspired by the re-recording will feature on the ten-track album, which will be released on the record label Cooking Vinyl on October 6 and supported by a series of live shows.” The live shows, being held at the London Palladium on October 8th and 9th, are sold out, although it is worth checking from time to time in case they have production tickets released. Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux album announced!

Roger Waters – The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux, his reimagining of the iconic 1973 Pink Floyd album, has now been announced. Coming on October 6th, it will be available in a variety of different editions, including digital, CD, cassette, and a range of double vinyl LPs in almost ‘any colour you like’! Roger: “When we recorded the stripped down songs for the Lockdown Sessions, the 50th anniversary of the release of The Dark Side Of The Moon was looming on the horizon. It occurred to me that The Dark Side Of The Moon could well be a suitable candidate for a similar re-working, partly as a tribute to the original work, but also to re-address the political and emotional message of the whole album. I discussed it with Gus and Sean, and when we’d stopped giggling and shouting ‘You must be ****ing mad’ at one another we decided to take it on. It’s turned out really great and I’m excited for everyone to hear it. It’s not a replacement for the original which, obviously, is irreplaceable. But it is a way for the seventy nine year old man to look back across the intervening fifty years into the eyes of the twenty nine year old and say, to quote a poem of mine about my Father, ‘We did our best, we kept his trust, our Dad would have been proud of us’. And also it is a way for me to honour a recording that Nick and Rick and Dave & I have every right to be very proud of.” You can get your first proper experience of Roger’s new take on this album, with the official lyric video for Money, below. The album will be available on digital platforms, as well as CD, and as mentioned above, the range of double vinyl editions, which includes standard black, a selected-store-only blue vinyl (please check with your local record store for this, or order below through HMV), an Amazon exclusive violet vinyl, a white vinyl which is a German exclusive through jpc, and Roger’s official store (https://rogerwaters.tmstor.es) has an exclusive transparent orange vinyl edition, bundles with exclusive numbered prints and standard CD and vinyl editions, and even a gold cassette! Interestingly, the fourth side of the vinyl includes “an original composition”, which isn’t on the CD or cassette editions (we don’t yet know about the digital offerings). Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon – extensive coverage in Record Collector magazine

Just published is the latest issue (March 2023, issue 542) of the UK’s Record Collector magazine, which as you might guess from the eye-catching cover, has a whopping eighteen page article looking at various aspects of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon, tying in with the upcoming 50th Anniversary of the album, and the associated releases. The magazine, in UK stores now and selected stores internationally, and available to purchase online through this link (https://shop.recordcollectormag.com/issue/view/issue/RC542), often includes material of interest to Floyd fans and on occasion, there’s major coverage within its pages. The main article takes a look at the 1972-74 live shows, from presenting the early version of the album through the changes and finessing to the final iteration that we all know and love. They chat with photographer Jill Furmanovsky, who took a number of atmospheric and unique pictures of the band at that time (and of course, is still doing so, having recently focused her lenses on Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets). They also take a look at reviews of the album from the time of its release, which is an interesting trip back in time. There’s a small section sharing the thoughts of Guy Pratt, vocalist Durga McBroom, and saxophonist Theo Travis about their experiences discovering and learning the songs from the album, for their respective roles on the road. Finally, and tying in with the release of the new book Pink Floyd – Any Colour You Like: The Dark Side Of The Moon on Vinyl (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/pink-floyds-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-collectors-book-anno.html) which details the 700 currently known variations of the album, there’s an interview with author Stefano Tarquini and publisher Charles Beterams about this mammoth undertaking (identifying and collecting these variations, and putting the book together). This sits alongside a guide to some of the editions worth tracking down, and a guide to 50 collectable variants for people to keep an eye out for. There’s also a selected UK discography, with rough valuations, a competition to win a Pink Floyd print, and an offer of a limited edition (just 100 will be made) A3 print of the magazine cover signed by Furmanovsky. Elsewhere in the magazine – and in addition to the eighteen pages focused on the Floyd – is an interview with Alan Parsons, talking about his life in music, a look at occasional Floyd vocalist Sam Brown’s new album, and a wide range of non-Floyd related features taking in artists from The Jam to the Rolling Stones. There are also obituaries for Jeff Beck and David Crosby.

Gerald Scarfe: The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall – hardback book

To be published (with a slight delay to the previous date) on December 2nd, 2021 by Little, Brown, is The Art Of Pink Floyd The Wall. This is a beautiful new, 288-page hardback book, in landscape format housed within a cardboard sleeve (shown to the right), that reveals a huge amount of rare and previously unseen sketches, paintings and more, created by Gerald Scarfe principally for The Wall project, but also including earlier materials, for Wish You Were Here and Animals, for example. It is an expensive book, but the work involved bringing together the breadth of material within, and the quality of its presentation, help to justify the price tag. Prefaced with a slightly bizarre foreword by Roger Waters (that is not overly illuminating!), Scarfe’s lengthy and absorbing introduction reveals that his first experience of Pink Floyd at UFO in London, 1967. Fast forward to 1973 and – in Nick Mason’s kitchen – Scarfe was asked to work on stuff for the Floyd’s upcoming Wish You Were Here project, specifically animations for the live shows, and of course, the 1974 Winter Tour programme and poster. Even at this stage, the rare images start to flow, with more traditional and recognisable sketches of the band members during their rehearsals, and a spider becoming a screaming Medusa head for Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Of course, the main body of the book concerns his work with Roger Waters and the rest of the band from 1978 onwards. Waters presented his raw demo tapes and explained the concept to Scarfe, who then set about designing the various characters who would inhabit the story; these would inevitably change as the process went on, and some never went past the initial few months (such as Punch and Judy being the main characters). The introduction continues with thoughts of the live show, including the inflatable slug or worm that would be transported from location to location to play the concerts in a venue that the band had total control over. Scarfe discusses his experience of the actual concerts, then talks about the “final part of Roger’s original ambition” for The Wall – the feature film. Scarfe then touches on the Waters Pros & Cons project, including the origins of the name Reg. He concludes the introduction by setting out his aims for this book, looking at things up to current times, and how going through his archives revealed to him that he could cover the whole story – and also showed him that some of the elements were in retrospect very personal to him and his life. The conclusion of the introduction also sees the end of Scarfe’s narrative in a traditional sense, with the rest of the book taken up with a couple of hundred further pages entirely taken up with pictures, paintings, drawings, and more, all accompanied with Scarfe’s footnotes about each image. This arguably works much better, as he isn’t forced into coming up with a narrative which isn’t really needed. It also allows him the ability to give short, pithy, and sometimes amusing captions which wouldn’t fit in to a more conventional rundown.
