New book: Phil Manzanera memoir (with PF/David Gilmour coverage) being published

The incredible musician, songwriter and record producer Phil Manzanera has now announced his memoir, Revolucion to Roxy. The book features over 100 black white, and colour, photographs looking at his times and adventures with not only Roxy Music but Pink Floyd and David Gilmour, Heroes del Silencio, and much more. There’s apparently a lot to interest Floyd fans in the book, with a chapter devoted to ‘The Gilmour Years’. Manzanera met Gilmour when Phil was still at Dulwich College. Phil’s brother Eugen was at Cambridge University and met David at gigs. Much later, Manzanera co-produced Gilmour’s 2006 album On an Island, and played in Gilmour’s band for tours in Europe and North America. Manzanera also co-wrote One Slip from 1987’s A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, played on the Rattle That Lock album, and helped bring together the pieces of music which eventually became Pink Floyd’s final album, The Endless River, which he was also co-producer for. Phil: “I’ve written this memoir for my English and Colombian family, dear friends and music fans, who have followed my musical twists and turns for over half a century. We all have different memories of the same events, and these stories are my stories. It’s a memoir that spans my 50’s childhood in Cuba, Hawaii and Venezuela, when everything seemed in the brightest technicolor, to grey but very cool ’60’s London and the start of a music career that continues to enrich my life, some 50 years later. The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary breakout sets: CD, LP, Blu-ray

Just announced is the release – on October 13th – of breakout sets from Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon (TDSOTM) 50th Anniversary box set. Coming on that date, from Warner Music (Sony Music outside Europe) are the hoped for stand-alone releases of the newly remastered TDSOTM on CD, LP and Blu-ray. First released as part of the box set which appeared in March, this will be the first time that the new remaster of the classic album will be available on its own. The Blu-ray contains the Dolby Atmos and a 5.1 Surround mix as well as the remastered Stereo version. The package comes with commemorative postcards, stickers and a 24-page booklet. The 50th Anniversary continues to be celebrated as Pink Floyd invited a new generation of animators to enter a competition to create animated music videos for any of the 10 songs on the album, and a number of entries have been lodged already. Pink Floyd has a rich history of collaborating with animators (Ian Emes, Gerald Scarfe, etc.), and in some cases the visuals that accompany the songs have become synonymous with the music itself. Animators can enter up to 10 videos, one per song on the album. A winner will be selected from a panel of experts which will include Nick Mason and Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell (Pink Floyd’s creative consultant). The deadline for submissions is November 30th 2023. A live streamed Q&A has also been announced, featuring Powell in conversation with animators who have created some videos in promotion for the competition and who will discuss their work and the creative process. Weather stops Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets gig in Vicenza, Italy

Last night, show four of the 2023 Echoes Tour in Europe saw Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets back in Italy, which like much of the central band of Europe has been suffering with extreme weather, with temperatures breaking records in many places. As you’ll see from the below, sadly a bad storm came in shortly before the band were due on stage in the Piazza dei Signori in Vicenza, forcing organisers to evacuate the city square where the concert was to be held, for everyone’s safety.

Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets 2023 Echoes Tour starts tonight!

Well, the day is now here! Tonight, in Loreley, Germany, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets start their 2023 Echoes Tour. They will be taking in a number of European countries this month (July) – Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, and no less than six shows in Italy, including a return for Nick to the ancient ruins of Pompeii for a concert to be held in the Teatro Grande (after he receives an honorary citizenship from the mayor of Pompei on the day of the concert – the same honour that David Gilmour received back in July 2016 when he played in the ruins located in the city). Then, in September, they will be playing six shows in Australia. As those of you who were fortunate enough to have seen the band on their quite extensive 2022 Echoes Tour, which took in shows in the UK, Europe, the US and Canada, presenting another incredible set list and upgraded staging to thrilled audiences across the board. One of many highlights of the set was of course the piece that the tour is named after – Echoes – each night a tour de force which is sure to be replicated again this year.
