With apologies for the short notice, the legendary Roundhouse are running an auction which concludes TODAY, and which includes two incredible Nick Mason auction items. Firstly, a pair of limited-edition, hand finished Pharaoh Drum Head prints, donated by Nick himself (https://riseupfortheroundhouse.com/lite-ui/?controller=lots&action=showLot&id=6). These drum heads prints are direct copies of the famous painted drum heads used during Pink Floyd’s early tours. The original ‘Pharaoh’ pair were used during the Floyd’s concert at the Royal Festival Hall, London, in 1969. Only 10 copies were ever made – by winning this lot you’ll own a piece of music history. Nick: “A couple of years ago we were moving all the drum kits and accessories to a new storage facility. Amongst the cymbal cases we found one that contained all the custom painted drum fronts that were painted for me by an artist, or artists, in the early seventies – usually to coincide with American tours. I have pictures of these in place at a number of shows…” Secondly, there’s a meet & greet with Nick’s Saucerful Of Secrets and double pass to their show at London’s Royal Albert Hall on June 29th. (https://riseupfortheroundhouse.com/lite-ui/?controller=lots&action=showLot&id=27) The show will be the band’s final UK concert of their upcoming Set The Controls 2024 tour. Both lots are available for bidding until the end of today, Wednesday March 20th. These are part of a larger silent auction full of top prizes from the music world, for their biannual Gala. They are fundraising for their work with young people aged 11-30, through which they provide life-changing experiences through the expressive arts.

David Gilmour – a very happy birthday to you!
Our very best wishes, and many happy returns, to David Gilmour who is celebrating his birthday today (March 6th)! Born and raised in Cambridge, David became involved with various bands in the area, principally Jokers Wild who were a popular draw when they played, before joining Pink Floyd in 1968. More recent years have seen David concentrating on his solo career, and helping out chums on their musical projects on an ad hoc basis. In 2019, some 120+ of David’s guitars were auctioned, raising $21.5 million (including some record-breaking amounts for individual instruments) which went to the environmental charity ClientEarth (https://clientearth.org). He also appeared as a guest performer at the Richard Thompson 70th Birthday Concert (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-guest-appearance-at-richard-thompson-70th-birthday-co.html), playing Dimming Of The Day and Fat Old Sun, and joining the encore. In 2020, on February 25th, shortly before all activity stopped around the world due to Coronavirus, David joined the stellar bill for the Mick Fleetwood Friends Celebrate The Music of Peter Green and The Early Years of Fleetwood Mac (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html) concert at London’s Palladium, which has been released as a 4LP, 2CD, Blu-ray and book box set (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mick-fleetwood-friends-concert-box-set-available-to-orde.html). The concert was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust charity (https://teenagecancertrust.org). More recently, of course, there have been numerous pictures of David posted by his wife, Polly, showing him being rather active in recording studios – one reason is the upcoming Mark Knopfler charity single bringing over 60 musicians – particularly guitarists – together for the Teenage Cancer Trust and Teen Cancer America (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/mark-knopfler-gathers-60-guitar-legends-including-david-gilmour-for-charity-s.html). However, there looks to have been plenty of activity unrelated to this project, giving indications that new music from David may be on the cards… It just remains for us to wish David a very happy day! Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets announce UK tour for June 2024
Just announced – Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets will be playing fourteen dates on their Set The Controls tour around the UK, as their European tour expands. The last time they played the UK was April/May 2022, so it is a treat for the band to be back in June this year! Last year, of course, the band played shows in Australia, preceded by a string of European dates including a stunning night in the excavated ruins of Pompeii, with the modern city of Pompei conferring honorary citizenship on Nick. Tickets for the new dates – detailed below – go on sale on Friday (February 16th) at 11am UK time, from MyTicket.co.uk (https://myticket.co.uk). Nick Mason said: “Six years ago when I got behind the drums again and we started playing the early Pink Floyd material, it was a real pleasure on so many levels. Many of the tracks had never actually been played live, so to have performed them all over the world has been something we’ve all enjoyed immensely. To get the opportunity to come back to the UK for another tour is something the band and I had been hoping we would be able to do, so to say “we’re back” feels good!” Here’s all the dates for you: June 11th – VICTORIA HALL, STOKE-ON-TRENT, ENGLAND (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/june-11th-victoria-hall-stoke-on-trent-en.html) – TICKETS (https://myticket.co.uk)

A very happy birthday to Nick Mason!
All of us here at Brain Damage offer our very best wishes to Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason, who celebrates the very special occasion of his 80th birthday today (January 27th). We all hope you are going to have a fantastic day, Nick! The cornerstone of the band, he had his first drum kit at the tender age of 13. A member of Pink Floyd since the earliest iterations, he is the only one to have appeared on every one of their albums. Thanks to his late father Bill, he has been a petrol head from a young boy, and cars have been – and remain – one of his major passions in life. His most recent book, Passion for Speed (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/passion-for-speed-nick-mason-and-mark-hales-2.html), is worth checking out, as is the DVD of the same name (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/dvds-and-videos/passion-for-speed-ferrari-enzo-dvd-nick-mason-and-mark-2.html) focusing on his Ferrari Enzo car (with Nick heavily involved). Of course, for those who haven’t read it, Inside Out: A Personal History of Pink Floyd (http://www.brain-damage.co.uk/books/inside-out-2011-edition-updated-paperback-nick-mason-2.html) is an absolutely essential read, and available in a variety of editions: hardback, paperback and an audiobook, which is read by Nick himself… Nick has contributed to a number of magazines on motoring issues over the years (including a fascinating monthly column in Octane Magazine), and also became president of the Guild of Motoring Writers. He is a trustee of the Beaulieu National Motor Museum, and a life member and Guardian of the BRDC (British Racing Drivers Club). He has been involved in motor racing since the early 1970s and has entered Le Mans five times. Musically, of course, the big news over the last few years was the launch of his new band, Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets. The four initial, small gigs in May 2018 held in London lead to a very successful and critically acclaimed European tour in September. This was followed, of course, in 2019 with dates in the US, Canada, and more dates in the UK and Europe. 2020 saw the release of the superb London Roundhouse concert film on audio and video formats, and was due to see the band play more shows. Sadly, the pandemic put the halt on any such plans for 2020 and 2021, but the band were back with a bang in 2022 and 2023! This year, Nick and the band will be back on tour, with six dates in Italy, and one in Germany, announced so far – click here to see all the 2024 gigs as it stands (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/index.php) – and we suspect there are plans for other shows too. Obviously, we’ll let you know as and when we get any further dates through. Many happy returns, Nick, and see you on the road!
Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets – Rome added to Italy 2024 dates
Some more news for our friends in Italy – Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets have just announced the date and venue of the Rome concert. They revealed back in December that they would be performing in the city, but there were no further details. Details of the dates and venues of ALL the Italian shows are below. Tickets for the newly announced show in Rome, at Cavea, Auditorium Parco Della Musica on July 21st, go on sale TOMORROW (Tuesday, January 23rd) at 11am local time (10am UK), through TicketOne (https://www.ticketone.it/artist/nick-mason/) and we anticipate that they will sell very quickly. Obviously, should further dates be announced for elsewhere, we’ll let you know – so there’s NO need to email us asking if they’ll be playing in your local town or city, or have any plans to play particular countries. We get asked this an awful lot. If it’s not showing below, we have no idea! We also don’t yet know if there will be any changes to the set list, or anything else. Due to the incredible reaction that Echoes received over the last couple of years, it is likely (although not guaranteed, of course) that they will include this during the show. We’ll all have to wait and see what they decide to play! Here are the dates, with the venue (and revised date) for Rome now included: 18 July – Teatro Arcimboldi, Milan, Italy (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2024/july-18th-teatro-arcimboldi-milan-italy.html) – TICKETS (https://www.ticketone.it/artist/nick-mason/)
