2023 has been a special year for all of us. The continuing war in Ukraine and the atrocities in Gaza plus the clear signs of the climate crisis overshadows much of what happened during the year. But in spite of all this, there have been concerts and festivals that made it worthwhile to visit. Here are the first 30 of my favorite photos from 2023 – most of them shot for Getty Images.
I have attended 16 festivals and photographed all together 300 + concerts at these festivals and different other venues. Pop, rock, metal, jazz, classical, folk music, Americana – many different genres and also different environments. Personally I like this diversity, during the years it has become more and more difficult to say what kind of music I love the most. I think the answer must be “good music”! But when I photograph concerts, the visual part also becomes important, sometimes making me love a concert even if I am not specially partial to the actual music that is performed.
Tie Dye Kitty – ‘Chasing Cloud Shadows’ Trinidad based technological aware pop with fizzy guitars and lush vocals Manic Carbon – ‘The Reset Era’ LA, US based multi voiced psychedelic indie pop with 16-bit sentimentalities Speak, Brother – ‘Even Though We Are Strangers’ Coventry, UK based indie-rock with synth undertones and charitable sentiments …
For the 2019 Record Store Day, one of the more popular and sought after releases was a new mono edition of Pink Floyd’s second album, A Saucerful Of Secrets, released in 1968. This followed one year on from the equally popular mono edition of The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn, the band’s superb 1967 debut album, released as part of the 2018 RSD. The mono mix on the album was remastered in 2017 from the original mono analogue tapes by James Guthrie, Joel Plante and Bernie Grundman. For those who missed out on this one-day-only release (which came with a Pink Floyd Records catalogue number of PFRLP29), we brought you some great news about this release, back in March. Well, the day has come! This excellent sounding mix is out on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl TODAY, April 29th 2022. It comes with the classic cover (with a removable sticker, featuring a great shot of the band), as per the picture shown here. The record labels mimic the original Columbia records labels. It has a catalogue number of PFRLP30, for those who are keeping track of all those – and we know a few people who are doing just that! David Gilmour with Luck and Strange, his new album – full details here (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/latest/david-gilmour-luck-and-strange-new-album-announced.html). Trailing the 12-page article, Uncut note that it has Gilmour discussing the making of the album at length, including the use of a younger team who don’t have the normal Floydian preconceptions or notions of how things are done. As ever with Uncut’s deep dive interviews, it is a fascinating and illuminating piece that is well worth reading, with some great pictures – a number of which were taken during the recent recording sessions. Elsewhere in the magazine, there are features on The Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, and more, and there’s a CD of live Can performances from 1973-1977. As we mentioned, the magazine should be hitting the shelves in UK stores on Friday, April 26th, and online orders can be made through the publisher’s own website (https://shop.kelsey.co.uk/single-issue/uncut-magazine/338).
