SXSW 2019 – Friday with Steve Earle, Darling West, Seratones and more

I have actually never been to the Mohawk before, and with both father and son Earle, Steve and Justin Townes, it was an easy choice.  (Photo above: Robert Ellis)

Mohawk is located on Red River and has been threatened by the new  hotel close  to it. The club has been voted Best Club in Austin at the Austin Music Awards, and it has two stages  and a large capacity.  My only  complaint is the lightning, but that is as a photographer and not as a music fan.

Justin Townes Earle started the night on the inside stage before Lily & Madeleine started on the outside stage. After them, Robert Ellis, Texas’ own mix of Liberace and Elton John, did a set. Seratones,  a high energy and good band with a great singer were up next before Steve Earle. Lots of people at The Mohawk and a good mood. After Steve Earle I walked over to the Driskill hotel to see  the Norwegian band Darling West. They will also play Leeann Atherton’s Barn Dance on Sunday, so I get an extra chance of seeing them.

Body Count featuring David Gilmour – Comfortably Numb official video

It was the collaboration that no-one saw coming – David Gilmour playing guitar for Ice-T’s band Body Count as they take a fresh look at Comfortably Numb. The song, which originally appeared on 1979’s Pink Floyd album The Wall, has been updated for the 21st century, with a focus on issues close to Ice-T’s heart. The song appears on the new album Merciless which is out on November 22nd. Permission was asked by Ice-T for the usage, and it clearly interested David, who went further and performed a new solo for the track on his Black Cat Strat – and even appears in the new, official video for the song, which was directed by Jay Scorsese. “For me “Comfortably Numb” is an introspective song—it’s me acknowledging that I’m older now. I’m telling the younger generation, you’ve got two choices: you can keep the fire burning or you can give up. It’s me trying to make sense of what’s happening, but also pointing out that we’re all in a place where we don’t have to face reality. We’ve got flat-screen TVs and popcorn, and we can just sit back and watch the chaos of the world like it’s a TV show. It doesn’t feel real until it shows up at your door. I’m a little numb, too—we all are.” – Ice-T on the track. David said: “Body Count’s version of ‘Comfortably Numb’ is quite radical, but the words really struck me. It astonishes me that a tune I wrote almost 50 years ago is back with this great new approach. They’ve made it relevant again. The initial contact from Ice-T was for permission to use the song, but I thought I might offer to play on it as well. I like the new lyrics. They’re talking about the world we’re living in now, which is quite scary. “Ice-T and BODY COUNT played in London recently. Sadly, I couldn’t make it, but if another opportunity came up to play with them, I’d jump at it.”

The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains coming to Montreal, Canada!

Announced this lunchtime: Canada has been confirmed as the sixth country to host The Pink Floyd Exhibition: Their Mortal Remains, the magnificent and critically acclaimed major retrospective of Pink Floyd, their music and the impact the band had on art and culture. Following its hugely successful debut at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum in 2017, which saw over 400,000 people attend, the exhibition has subsequently traveled to Italy, Germany, Spain and the United States attracting over 500,000 people and will now take residency in the cultural hub of Montreal. The Exhibition opens on November 4 at Arsenal Contemporary Art Montreal, which should be the perfect venue for the immersive experiential journey through Pink Floyd’s world. The band played in Montreal a number of times, including the concert which concluded the 1977 tour, and inspired The Wall. The exhibition is due to run for the rest of the year, with an anticipated closing date of December 31, 2022. Tickets for the exhibition have just gone on sale via PinkFloydExhibition.com (http://www.pinkfloydexhibition.com) and as before, advance booking is highly recommended as popular times and dates will no doubt sell quickly. Opening hours each week for the exhibition are as follows: Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 10:00am to 6:00pm (time of last entry)
Fridays, Saturdays: 10:00am to 7:00pm (time of last entry)
Sundays: 10:00am to 5:00pm (time of last entry)  Ticket prices include the excellent audioguide which attendees to previous stagings of the exhibition will know is an extremely well designed facility which will really enhance your visit. The Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary – exclusive Japanese SACD & loads of extras

As you all know, the 50th Anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon is next month, with a deluxe box set, the Live At Wembley 1974 LP and CD sets, and the official book (which we’ve seen and is very nice) that’s included in the box set, and available separately too, all being released on March 24th. Exclusively, though, for the Japanese market (but thanks to HMV.co.jp (https://www.hmv.co.jp/en/artist_Pink-Floyd_000000000004473/item_The-Dark-Side-Of-The-Moon-Hybrid-Multi-Ch-Edition_13590862) and CDJapan (https://www.cdjapan.co.jp/product/SICP-10143), available worldwide online) is a hybrid SACD (Super Audio CD) version of the album, bundled with loads of reproduction memorabilia – as seen to the right! For those unfamiliar with hybrid SACDs, they hold higher resolution audio, often with surround sound versions as well as standard stereo, and the stereo version is playable on all normal CD/DVD/Blu-ray players. To play the multi-channel audio, you need a compatible player, but as the format was devised by Sony and Philips, there are plenty of those around still. The surround and stereo versions of TDSOTM on this SACD is as released in 2021 on the SACD from Analogue Productions SACD. The album is packaged in typical Japanese style – a 7″ version of the original album cover, along with the stickers and posters you would hope to be included in this reproduction.
