Georgia has thrown down the gauntlet to Wales following their Six Nations underperformance, inviting Warren Gatland’s team to a match in Tbilisi this autumn.
Wales, for the first time since 2003, found themselves at the bottom of the Six Nations table after a disappointing campaign that concluded with a loss to Italy in Cardiff.
In contrast, the Lelos continued their impressive form in the Rugby Europe competition, securing their seventh consecutive championship win in the second-tier tournament and their 13th title in the past 14 years.
The prospect of a play-off between the Six Nations wooden spoon holder and the Rugby Europe champion to determine participation in next year’s premier championship has reignited debate.
While the likelihood of promotion and relegation remains slim, the Georgian Rugby Union (GRU) has extended an invitation to Wales to face off in Tbilisi, underscoring the potential for an intriguing encounter.
“It’s my great pleasure to invite our dear friends from Wales to play Georgia in Tbilisi this autumn,” said Ioseb Tkemaladze, president of the GRU. “After a thrilling Six Nations and Georgia’s seventh success in a row in the Rugby Europe Championship, it’s the fixture rugby fans everywhere are crying out for so I really hope the Welsh can take up our invitation.
“Of course we’d be equally happy to play them in Cardiff – where we won a famous victory in 2022. There is a strong connection between our two proud rugby nations, and we have had some exciting contests recently. We are rugby brothers.”
