Back in December, we told you about a new, streaming-only release from Roger Waters – The Lockdown Sessions. The album consists of six songs, and runs for 39 and a half minutes. At that time, there were no publicised plans for a physical release of this, but in April we gave the good news for those of you interested in this, is that a CD and limited vinyl LP had been announced. Today – June 2nd, 2023 – these physical editions have hit the shelves of stores (both real and virtual). With the vinyl edition being limited, we suspect it won’t hang around for long, so if you want to add to your collection, it’s worth doing so without too much delay. Housed in a gatefold cover, the tracks on the album are Mother, Two Suns In The Sunset, Vera, The Gunner’s Dream, The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range, and Comfortably Numb 2022. Roger explained that he was going to do an album of unusual encores, but then lockdown struck. “Our Us and Them Tour lasted three years… At every gig we did an encore after the main show closed with Comfortably Numb⦠the encore was always Mother… I can’t remember why I decided to start doing other songs?… Anyway, at some point after the end of the tour⦠I started thinking, “It could make an interesting album, all those encores”⦠“The Encores”. “Yeah, has a nice ring to it!” Thenâ¦I’m in England doing the Ginger Baker tribute gig one Tuesday night at the Hammersmith Odeon with Eric Clapton and⦠the following Saturday marching from The Australian Embassy to Parliament Square to make a speech in support of Julian Assange, when bugger me, Covidâ¦Schlummmm! “For me it was Friday March 13th 2020. Lockdown! So much for the “Encores” project. Unless⦠We’ve tacked C. Numb on the end of the collection, as an appropriate exclamation point in closing this circle of love.” The Lockdown Sessions were recorded at home during the Covid lockdown between 2020 and 2021. Early ’70s live Pink Floyd recordings released
In a surprise move, with no official announcement or fanfare, a dozen recordings of Pink Floyd live during the years 1970 – 1972 have quietly been released to the various streaming services. Whilst the sound quality in places leaves a little to be desired, much of it sounds great, and more importantly the recordings document a wonderful period of the band in concert. They find the band in fine form, having honed their craft so that many of the pieces performed enjoyed some extended improvisation and exploration. With one of the recordings coming from March 1972, there’s also an early rendition of The Dark Side Of The Moon. As many of you will know, that was an album which changed quite considerably from its initial outings, so an interesting one to listen to if you haven’t yet heard it. The full list of albums the band released as part of their surprise drop is as follows: They Came In Peace, Leeds University 28 February 1970 Washington University 16 November 1971
Live At Grosser Saal, Musikhalle, Hamburg, West Germany 25 February 1971
Mauerspechte, Berlin Sportpalast 5 June 1971
Lyon Tokyo, Lyon 12 June 1971, Tokyo 16 March 1972
Palaeur Rome 20 June 1971
Amsterdamse Bos Free Concert 26 June 1971
Live In Montreux 18 19 September 1971
KB Hallen, Copenhagen, Vol I, 23 September 1971
KB Hallen, Copenhagen, Vol II, 23 September 1971
Over Bradford Pigs On The Groove, Bradford University 10 October 1971
Embryo, San Diego, 17 October 1971
The Screaming Abdabs, Quebec City, 10 November 1971 Visit various streaming services, including Apple Music (https://music.apple.com), Spotify (https://www.spotify.com), and Amazon Music, to hear the recordings. Our thanks to those who wrote in about the release of these live gems.

In depth feature on Pink Floyd’s Dark Side in new Classic Rock Magazine
(number 303, cover date Summer 2022) of the magazine Classic Rock (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?). As you can see, issue 303âs cover stars are Pink Floyd: they bring you the story of the birth of The Dark Side Of The Moon. We hear (from someone who has an early, subscriber copy) that it is a nicely done article, with plenty of unusual pictures illustrating the twelve-page piece. Elsewhere in the magazine, they look at how Pete Townshendâs abandonment of a science-fiction rock opera led to The Whoâs Whoâs Next. Also how, after years of mud slinging, power grabs, law suits and general animosity, Journey somehow managed to make a new album. After more than a decade away, Porcupine Tree are back with a new album. Has their time finally come? Classic Rock finds out. There’s also all the normal features, including an extensive review section. You can order the magazine direct, worldwide, through this link (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/6936929/classic-rock-magazine-single-issue.thtml?).

David Gilmour guitars: Christies, London – book viewing slot now
As you know, Christie’s New York is handling the upcoming sale of a significant chunk of the personal guitar collection of David Gilmour. With more than 120 guitars, including his preferred Fender models of Broadcasters, Esquires, Telecasters and Stratocasters, the auction on 20th June marks a rare opportunity for guitar aficionados, musicians and collectors to explore one of the world’s most comprehensive groupings of guitars that hooked a generation. As we noted, prior to the sale, the entire David Gilmour Collection will be on display at Christie’s London between 27th – 31st March, followed by highlights of the collection on display in Los Angeles from 7th – 11th May, and will conclude with a full preview in New York from 14th – 19th June. You can book your viewing slot for the London staging now – visit this page at Christie’s website to select your preferred time (https://a.flexbooker.com/widget/34ee144d-e3ee-4663-83b3-101464fd20a7?fbclid=IwAR2MllKSAB_jr3k5oZXI21WgMw6AQaBnXcREHn-C7iQN-u80xGpEm6WbfKI#calendar). Reservations are free of charge, but necessarily limited to reduce congestion, so don’t delay. At time of writing this, most time slots are still available, although some of the later slots each day are gone. For those unable to attend, the auction house had created an incredible virtual tour of the upcoming George Michael collection – hopefully they will create the same for David’s guitars… We have no idea if photography will be permitted at the viewing (a question we’ve had a number of times already) although if you pre-order the catalogue for The David Gilmour Guitar Collection, direct from Christies (https://catalogues.christies.com/christies-shop/Product.aspx?offerId=52694), you should have great pictures of every item on offer. The catalogues are priced at £30/$50/€45 each plus postage, and please note that catalogues will not be despatched until the week commencing 13th May, so it is unlikely to be available to purchase at the London or LA preview events.
