Marcos Alonso had a great first season at Stamford Bridge in 2016/17 as the Blues won the Premier League title under Antonio Conte. However, it appears his stock has gradually decreased since then.
Indeed, since the arrival of Frank Lampard, the 28-year-old has lost his place as a first-choice starter. Instead, Emerson Palmieri has been chosen on the left side of the defence when fully fit this season.
However, the Italy international picked up an injury while playing for the Azzurri against Finland over a week ago and was missing from both of Chelsea’s last two games, against Wolves and Valencia.

Alonso, having come back in to the side to replace the 25-year-old, has taken advantage of the opportunity, averaging a WhoScored rating of 7.54 across the two matches.
His latest display, in the Champions League, even drew praise from the south-west London outfit’s supporters despite the club’s disappointing 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge.
It seems he was a rare shining light amid an otherwise disappointing evening for the Blues.

I thought Chelsea played well. Couldn’t beat the Valencia goalkeeper. He made many good saves. Unfortunate we didn’t find the back of the net. Alonso had a strong game which is great to see. Willian is vintage and Barkley shouldn’t have taken the penalty shot.

Speak of Alonso and I will ask you why you’re so full of hate? Alonso had more shoots on target, made some decent crossings, and no Valencia player used his wing, meaning he defended well, William was stingy, Lamp had nothing to offer, Barckley is a selfish player.

Mate Alonso was our biggest goal threat last night, coming close with his free kicks.

Alonso and Azpilicueta especially were good, your agenda is useless today

Azpi is done for sure, Alonso actually had a pretty good game. Chelsea had a lot of chances but just couldn’t get that goal.

Alonso played well and he has been at this position, I’ve been saying it for a while now he’s phenomenal when played as a sort of wing back
