Americana Band The Devil Makes Three paid a visit to the Vinyl Music Hall in Pensacola, Florida. The band is currently on its 2020 Winter Tour which concludes on February 8 in Austin, Texas. The lineup included original band members Pete Bernhard – lead vocals/guitar and Cooper McBean banjo/guitar, along with MorganEve Swain – standup bass, who is replacing Lucia Turino on this tour.

Acoustic guitars, with some banjo thrown in, and a standup bass are what normally come to mind when thinking about the band. However, a quick glance at the stage before the show revealed fans would be hearing much more than just that. There was not only a pedalboard with a dozen effect pedals on it, but also a drum set at the rear of the stage.

The show started with a brief electric guitar intro by McBean. The stage lights were off, so the band members were blanketed in darkness. Seven candelabras, consisting of 29 dimly lit candles, were positioned across the stage providing a mysterious atmosphere. When the intro finished, lights illuminated the band at which point they launched into a soulful A Capella version of the Bill Monroe Southern Gospel classic “What Would You Give in Exchange for Your Soul” from their Redemption & Ruin album. Their follow-up was another gospel song from Redemption & Ruin, the up tempo “There’ll Be a Jubilee”. The song featured a rockabilly finger picking guitar solo by McBean.

The Devil Makes Three is one of those bands that you can’t throw into one category and that’s how they like it. The bands setlist for the night showcased their unique blend of Bluegrass, Blues, Rock, Folk, Country and Gospel. “Paint My Face” from Chains are Broken displayed a 60’s British rock vibe with it’s opening guitar riff and beat. “Drunken Hearted Man” from Redemption & Ruin was the bands bluegrass interpretation of the Robert Johnson Delta Blues classic. The folk standard “St James” from A Little Bit Faster and a Little Bit Worse was the last song of the night.

The house was packed, and the crowd enjoyed the show throughout the night as evidenced by the drinking and dancing with men twirling their ladies to the music. Bernhard gave strong vocal performances rolling through song after song sounding almost Dylanesque at times. McBean provided a wide array of guitar and banjo riffs and solos. Swain plucked away at her bass keeping the band in rhythm while delivering harmonious background vocals. Regardless of your genre preference, The Devil Makes Three is an act worth considering when they come to your town.
