Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets Roundhouse Blu-ray – NO region coding confirmed!

The announcement of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets: Live At The Roundhouse, coming via Sony Records on April 17th, 2020 as a 2CD/DVD package, on double vinyl and on Blu-ray, has gone down very well with those who have already seen the band perform, and with those who haven't yet had the opportunity! These releases include the show in its entirety, and the video formats include some additional footage including interviews and rehearsals.The pair of Nick Mason's Saucerful Of Secrets shows at London's Roundhouse on May 3rd and 4th were recorded with a grand total of 18(!) cameras were pressed into action on the second night. These included remotely operated cameras, and one suspended on wires which flew back and forth above the audience. The Teatro Grande is thought to have been built in the second century BC, carved into the lava mass on which Pompeii was originally built. It was one of the first permanent stone theatres in the Roman empire, and used to seat around 5,000. It was preserved – as the rest of the site was – by the devastating volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and these days for events caters for around 3,000 audience members. Should be a magical place to see the band in action on their 2023 Echoes Tour (https://www.brain-damage.co.uk/nick-mason-s-sos-2023/index.php), which is also heading to Australia for a string of shows in September.

Animals 4-disc package with surround mixes revealed

This morning, Roger Waters revealed the great news that the new James Guthrie stereo and 5.1 surround mixes of Pink Floyd’s 1977 album, Animals, is to get a release. This was held up due to disagreements over the sleeve notes but sounds like a way forward has been reached. It’s important to note that there’s no detailed announcement yet over what the release will entail. In a video that Roger has posted talking about it, there’s a cover shot which doesn’t necessarily seem to be the final image (the contents sticker doesn’t have any catalogue numbering on it, which you would normally expect to see). It is an atmospheric update on the classic cover image, taken from a different angle (the train sheds in the foreground are just outside Victoria station) and while the Power Station building was in the early stages of being rebuilt for the new occupants. It is possible that the release consists of the one item: a “limited edition 4-disc package [containing] the remixed album on LP/CD/Blu-ray & DVD. Blu-ray & DVD also contain new high resolution stereo and 5.1 mixes, plus 1977 original stereo mix”. It also gives the technical detail of the audio resolutions on offer: “Blu-ray – stereo (24-bit/192kHz, dts MA [Master Audio]), 5.1 (24-bit/96kHz, dts MA). DVD – Stereo (LPCM 24-bit/96kHz, dts), 5.1 (dts, Dolby Digital)”. The contents sticker COULD be just a placeholder, mentioning the main confirmed elements, as we presume there might be a booklet with images as well, for example. As to whether any of the elements will be released outside the 4-disc package, and when it is being released, will be a case of waiting for the official, detailed announcement. Once we have that we will bring you all the final detail, but we figured you’d want to know that the Animals release was happening, as it has been talked about for some time now.

For those who need reminding, let’s take a look at what is on offer. Looking at the largest item first, the box set, this consists of 5 CDs in a 60-page hardback book, 6 Blu-rays and 5 DVDs, each in gatefold wallets, 2 7 vinyl singles with material never released, a 40-page hardback photo book, replica tour programmes, and a reproduction memorabilia collection. The box set offers over six hours of previously unheard audio and over seven hours of previously unseen audiovisuals from A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, The Division Bell and The Endless River albums. The CDs take in the 2019 remix of A Momentary Lapse Of Reason, a 2019 remix of Delicate Sound Of Thunder, a disc of live B-sides and unreleased material from The Division Bell, and a new remix of the 1990 Knebworth concert. With AMLOR, the album is presented for the first time in 5.1, and has been updated and remixed by David Gilmour and Andy Jackson. The release of The Later Years project gives an opportunity for a fresh overview of this album. By returning to some of Richard Wright’s keyboard parts and recording new drum tracks with Nick Mason, producers David Gilmour and Bob Ezrin have restored the creative balance between the three Pink Floyd members. The Blu-rays include 5.1 surround sound mixes of the above, as well as The Division Bell, a restored and remixed Delicate Sound of Thunder and includes additional tracks not on the original release, a re-edited PULSE, the full Venice 1989 and Knebworth 1990 concert films (Knebworth includes Great Gig In The Sky), along with music videos, the full range of tour screen films (including the very amusing Money screen film from 1994 with a very retro looking alien complete with ray gun), documentaries, and a new film by Ian Emes for The Endless River album. The DVDs replicate the above material with the exception of the surround sound mixes, which are only on the Blu-rays. The two 7 vinyl singles host two previously unreleased songs – Arnold Layne from the 2007 Syd Barrett tribute concert at the Barbican, and Lost For Words recorded at the rehearsals for the 1994 Earls Court shows. The double vinyl LP and CD highlights packages bring together a flavour of the full set, taking in tracks from Knebworth, The Division Bell sessions, the Momentary Lapse remix, Delicate Sound and more. This has different artwork to the box set.
