Netherlands dream-pop duo Maida Rose release ethereal new single “Harmony of Heartache”.
“Harmony of Heartache” is Maida Rose’s debut of a collection of songs written across the final five years of the duo’s adolescence. Roos Meijer and Javièr den Leeuw have been working tirelessly on their first album from the quiet of a bedroom studio, taking a truly behind-the-scenes approach to the development of their dream-pop soundscapes.
For fans of Cigarettes After Sex, Men I Trust and Beach House, “Harmony of Heartache” features the familiar and gentle swell of electric guitars beneath languid, drifting vocals. “The song is about the experience of having a loved one close to you going through depression,” the band explain. “It is written as a support for everyone who is going through a rough time. Especially during covid, and in the middle of the dark wintertime, this is the perfect time to release ‘Harmony of Heartache’.”
Maida Rose’s debut is equal parts peaceful and intimate, likely reminiscent of the pair’s songwriting process from Javièr’s childhood home in The Hague. Whilst the vocal melody is just about as melancholic as you could hope to hear from a dream-pop classic, the track is uplifted by a feeling of hopefulness somewhere between the glistening synths and lush vocal layering.
“Harmony of Heartache” is the perfect soundtrack to your January blues; a remedy to really sink into. If this band’s debut is anything to go by, we will most definitely look forward to their future releases.
