Cat Marina releases new single “Ex Friends + Bad Endings”, an autobiographical earworm to add to your Summer playlist.
23-year-old Cat Marina cut his teeth working in recording studios alongside the likes of Pete Robertson (The Vaccines) and Will Hicks (Ed Sheeran), but recently ditched the live studio setting for his bedroom setup. Writing, producing and playing on his own songs, Cat has carved out a sound of his own under the umbrella of quirky indie pop.
“Ex Friends + Bad Endings” is yet another feather in his cap, brilliantly showcasing his songwriting skill. Cat injects his own wit into self-reflecting lyrics, descriptive of leaving toxic relationships in the past and the struggles of moving on. “I just realised I landed in a place where I was relying on other people for my own sanity, and that’s fine as long as the pack of cards you’ve built into a stable little flat-pack bungalow doesn’t cave in on itself. But when it does, you realise you’re left with no idea who you actually are, or where you’re supposed to go.” He explains further that this song represents the starting of a process to discover more about himself without relying on others.
Cat’s lyricism is confident and emotionally intelligent, with his autobiographical message underpinning this track of complete authenticity. “Ex Friends + Bad Endings” is full to bursting with musical hooks and pop sensibility without becoming cheesy, and it’s clear to see why his previous releases have received such support from the likes of BBC Radio 1, Amazon Prime and more.
