Prog Magazine (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/47052423/prog-magazine-single-issue.thtml) – and as you’ll see from the cover image, it’s got plenty to interest fans of David Gilmour and Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets! Prog gave us the following rundown of what the issue offers: “Nine years after David Gilmour released his last solo album he is about to release Luck And Strange. That evocative guitar tone, those emotive solos, that distinct voice – all those components that make up a great Gilmour album are all in place. He tells us all about his upcoming release, and that heâs already planning a follow-up, plus we asked 30 of his peers, collaborators, fellow musicians and fans in the prog world to pick their favourite David Gilmour performance. “Also in this issue Thijs van Leer tells us all about the new Focus album, 12; Gryphon recall 1974, a year that saw them release two great albums and tour with Yes; Fairport Conventionâs Dave âPeggyâ Pegg looks back over his career; and we track down former ELO bass player Michael de Albuquerque. “Elsewhere, we have the latest from Tim Bowness, Jadis, Azure, Rendezvous Point, Evergrey and Alcest; we review the new album from Leprous and catch Yes, Saucerful Of Secrets, Caligulaâs Horse and more in the live arena. “We also have a free sampler from Spirit Of Unicorn Music with fantastic music from Yes, Keith Emerson, Greg Lake, Focus, John Wetton and loads more and four great David Gilmour postcards.” The main article with David – where he notes that Luck and Strange “is the best album I’ve made in all those years since 1973, when The Dark Side Of The Moon came out” – is an in-depth, six page look at the things which shaped the new album, and how it came together, through the words of Gilmour and Polly Samson. Inevitably, the list of his 30 greatest performances as chosen by fellow musicians will prove to fans as interesting as it will be divisive and debate stoking. Will your favourite be in there? Finally, on the Floyd related front, there’s a very (and rightly) enthusiastic two-page review of Nick Mason’s Saucerful Of Secrets live at London’s Royal Albert Hall recently, concluding their 2024 UK tour. You can order Prog Magazine through this link (https://www.magazinesdirect.com/az-single-issues/47052423/prog-magazine-single-issue.thtml) although depending on when you read this, the new issue might not yet be showing there. There also seems to be a pop up offer which could save you 5% on your order (although there are terms and conditions attached, so please check those).

Very rare Syd Barrett painting up for auction
The Cambridge based Cheffins auction house (https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art/lot-view,-roger-syd-barrett-british-19462006_71901.htm), who sold the contents of Syd Barrett’s home in St Margaret’s Square, Cambridge, where he had lived since 1981, after his death in 2006, is auctioning a very rare artwork by him at the end of this month. The painting, titled Orange Dahlias In A Vase, 1961 and signed R.Barrett, is currently in the possession of childhood friend Phil Harden, and will be sold off on May 27th. The artwork was created by Barrett when he was just 15 years of age, and was a mix of watercolours and pastels. There were nine later artworks sold in the previous Cheffins auction, raising £121,000 to fund local art training. The estimated selling price for this newly revealed artwork is between £3,000 – £5,000 plus buyer’s fees. We suspect though that this is a VERY conservative figure and expect the final hammer price to be a lot higher. The auction house explains the provenance: “In 1957, Barrett began his secondary education at Cambridgeshire High School for Boys, which aimed to emulate the public-school model. As a student, Barrett was emphatically average and, to most of his teachers, remarkable only in his inability to follow the rules. To Gerald Arthur Clement Harden, the schoolâs art teacher between 1938 and 1971, however, Barrett was a conspicuous and prodigious talent and one of the very few pupils permitted to use Harden’s oil paints. “Painted when Barrett was just 15 years old, the present lot was gifted to Harden by the artist shortly before he left the school and began studying art at Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology. Although generally perceived as an unmotivated student by most of his tutors, Hardenâs support encouraged Barrett to pursue further study in painting and ignited in him a passion for art that would continue to burn until his death in 2006.” To see the painting in more detail, and for more details of the auction, including how to bid, visit Cheffins.co.uk (https://www.cheffins.co.uk/fine-art/lot-view,-roger-syd-barrett-british-19462006_71901.htm).

This is a very special opportunity to experience Pink Floyd’s celebrated and significant early body of work played live including songs from albums ‘The Piper At The Gates of Dawn’ and ‘A Saucerful Of Secrets’, through to ‘Obscured By Clouds’. The band have been very highly praised by fans and the media alike for the quality and uniqueness of each performance – the Saucers clearly have a wonderful time performing together, and that comes across clearly in the music.
