Liverpool legend predicts eye-catching swoop will soften blow of three exits

Liverpool legend John Aldridge has said that a move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner would be a “great option” for Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer.

Werner has been in outstanding form for his Bundesliga employers this term, having scored 20 goals and six assists while appearing in every league game this season.

Such form has helped his side to cement their place at the top of the German top flight and, overall, Werner’s tally for the season stands at 25 goals in 27 appearances.

Various reports have indicated that Liverpool are keen on a move for the 23-year-old either in January or the summer, with the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United also linked.

A move for Werner this summer could coincide with a number of Anfield exits, with Adam Lallana out of contract at the end of the season and Xherdan Shaqiri heavily credited with a move away.

Writing in a column for The Independent, Aldridge predicted that Liverpool could match potential exits this summer with a move for Werner.

“I can see [Dejan] Lovren, [Adam] Lallana and [Xherdan] Shaqiri leaving, so [Jurgen] Klopp will want to replace them with young and hungry players who fit into his mould,” the pundit said.

“Prolific Red Bull Leipzig striker Timo Werner would be a great option and the joy for Liverpool will be that every player will want to be part of their success story.

“I saw Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe eulogising Liverpool in an interview a few days ago and it confirmed that the world’s greatest players are captivated by the story Klopp has pieced together.

“With the manager signing a contract to commit to the club for another four years, there is no reason why Liverpool cannot win trophy after trophy as they don’t just have the best team in England but possibly Europe right now.”

Werner has 86 goals and 37 assists to his name for Leipzig since his move from Stuttgart in 2016.

In other Liverpool news, Klopp is prepared to allow right-back Nathaniel Clyne to leave the club on loan this month until the end of the season.

Clyne, who suffered a serious knee injury in the summer, has not featured for the Reds so far this season and is unlikely to usurp Trent Alexander-Arnold from the right-back position when fit.

According to journalist Alan Nixon, Liverpool are prepared to let the player leave this month to hand him game time.

Clyne’s contract is up at the end of the season.
