Liverpool legend laughs at Gary Neville’s pick for next Man Utd manager; pushes surprise candidate

A manager Gary Neville pushed to become the next Man Utd boss has been scoffed at by Robbie Fowler, who has in turn named who should land the role.

The question of who will be appointed the next Man Utd manager is one that could dominate the summer. Ralf Rangnick appears highly unlikely to be given the role on a permanent basis. Though if moving upstairs into a consultancy role, he could yet have a say on the matter.

The likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Erik Ten Hag have drawn the most frequent links with the position. Pochettino’s time in Paris appears to be imploding after they followed up their recent Champions League humbling at the hands of Real Madrid with a 3-0 defeat to Monaco this weekend.

A rather more robust candidate that has been pushed by several ex-United players is Diego Simeone.

The enigmatic Argentine has been talked up by Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and most recently Gary Neville.

However, writing in his column for the Mirror, Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler scoffed at the thought of Simeone at Old Trafford.

Man Utd fans would revolt against Simeone – Fowler

“I laughed this week when I heard Gary Neville shouting that his former club should make Diego Simeone their next manager,” wrote Fowler.

“Honestly. C’mon. I’m not saying he’s anti-football, but some of the antics his team get up to, some of the horrible stuff they do, and the tactics they pursue. Not at Manchester United.

“The fans would be calling it out within weeks. And even if he actually won things with it, they wouldn’t put up with it for long. United have a certain expectation about how they should be playing, which was laid down by Sir Matt Busby and Ferguson.

“Simeone doesn’t fit with that. He doesn’t fit with anyone who loves football, he essentially exists to stop opponents playing football. Which no one should welcome.”

Fowler then suggested who he believes warrants a chance in the Old Trafford dugout.

“I have a shout for them though,” continued Fowler. “Simone Inzaghi, the younger brother of Filippo.

“You can see with Inter he has taken them on beyond the dour football of Antonio Conte, despite the club having financial problems.

“They are in contention for the title. They performed well – and I think above their level – against Liverpool in the Champions League, and all with budget constraints.

“Before that he was at Lazio, where he won three trophies and was hugely popular with the fans. Would it be a gamble? Of course. But United need someone with an ability to build something now, not simply a ‘name’.”
