Former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has urged current incumbent of the role Jose Mourinho to get Dele Alli back in his plans.
Alli has fallen out of favour since Mourinho replaced Mauricio Pochettino as Spurs boss in 2019. The England midfielder is yet to complete a full game this season.
Paris Saint-Germain were heavily linked with Alli in the January transfer window. Pochettino wanted to reunite with him by taking him to the French capital on loan.
However, despite Alli and Mourinho also being open to the deal, it failed to materialise. Daniel Levy did not want to sanction his departure without signing a replacement.
It leaves Alli wondering what his situation will be for the rest of the season. His last Premier League start was on the opening day.
The 24-year-old is clearly keen for more regular gametime, and that will have to be at Tottenham now.
Whether Mourinho will grant him that or not remains to be seen. However, former Spurs boss Redknapp believes the Portuguese coach would be making a mistake by not re-integrating Alli.
“With Dele Alli, why not get him back on board?” he told talkSPORT.
“Sort him out, that’s your job. Get him playing again. What’s his problem?
“The kid was one of the best players in the country two years ago. You’ve got to find a way. He’s still only a young boy. Get him playing again.
“Don’t just discard people, get them playing. That’s your job.
“Make them feel important, make them feel like they’ve got something to offer, get them back to where they were.”
Alli aware of comments
Interestingly, Alli has liked a video of Redknapp’s quotes on Twitter.
He will now be hoping to make more of an impact in the second half of the season. It has been 11 months since his last Premier League goal.
Alli remains under contract at Tottenham until 2024. Hence, there is plenty of time for him to revive his career in north London should Mourinho give him the opportunity.
